This video explains why third-person is generally a negative trait.

http://youtu.be/v7zoVIsIT2A

I've found that it does apply to vehicle simulations, just to a lesser extent. DCS pvp servers misconfigured to allow third person, even if it's just around one's own aircraft, enables pseudo-TGP which allows you to zoom in and spot targets around BVR ranges with a stable camera. P-51D with TGP and the same all-around camera system as the F-35? Sure! It's a super realistic simulation, after all. ;)

I hope Frontier sticks to their design choice of having no magical invisible/intangible/invincible external camera. I'd love a camera drone though, at least then it's an actual object that exists and has to abide by the laws of physics, and well, existing at all. It would draw ship power, it could get blown up, have a limited operating range, and all of that. Seems fair. :) I'd target those first going up against anyone using one.

Nice vid. He makes some excellent points.

From that video...

Loved -

The shield effects, much nicer than ED.
The damage system.
3rd person view was very nice.

Did not love -

The whole things had a kind of "clunky" feel about it. Don't know if it was a poor framerate or what but it did not look very smooth.
The cockpit was just awful. Hopefully that's a work in progress. It also looked way too "fighter plane" as well.
The yaw. I guess I prefer ED's pitch/roll mechanic much more, yaw just doesn't look or feel as good IMHO.

100% agreed.

I'm going to say this here, because I'll be utterly destroyed if I voice any dissent over at the SC boards:

First of all, I backed SC with over twice as much as I backed ED with. All of the hype and ships really worked on me, what can I say? Anyways, Back when they released the Hangar module at gamescom Chris had mentioned that they were already playing the dogfighting module and that it was coming along nicely and should be ready by December.

I don't care that the DFM got delayed, and from what we've seen I'm really glad they did, but what really irked me was that the DFM was hyped and hinted at until 0 hour and then "SURPRISE!! Thanks for all the money, we're delaying the DFM."

When the ED alpha was released I was absolutely astonished at how polished everything looked. I was seriously NOT expecting that. Then Chris and the Wingman basically shrugged it off condescendingly saying how they are going for more detail. Are they blind?! Their attitude came off to me as being smug.

Moving on to the livestream showing off the DFM...well....I wasn't impressed. Clunky is a good word. I definitely understand that it is pre-alpha, but when you thumb your nose at ED touting how great your stuff is and it looks like you ported a vehicle from the Arma 2 engine or just started working on it (meanwhile, bragging about it since August), I don't know... Then to keep us "entertained" (I guess), they put out some more unfinished hangar module stuff. Some awkward firing range in which sounds of the weapons you're firing aren't working. Come to think of it, sounds (walking) are STILL not implemented in the business hangar while in 1st person (makes me scratch my head at how "polished" Chris wants things but then allows that).

I really wish I didn't spend so much on SC vs ED and had enough to buy into the ED Alpha/Beta 1. Things seem to be much more level headed over here, and I'm noticing a pattern of excuses over at SC.

I wouldn't jump to early conclusions yet. SC is under development for 2 (?) years now, while ED since 2009 (correct?). Even if we neglect those facts, it's still too early to condemn the whole game based on what we've seen by now.
Relax and give them more time :)
There's a lot of eyes focused on SC right now, it's Chris' reputation at stake, I don't think it's worth to fail for him now.

Oh I'm not worried about that. I'm sure SC will be an awesome game. I'm just disappointed at their attitude towards ED when ED is objectively superior at this point (combat alpha actually exists right now in an impressive state).

To be fair, would we be any different if they had beaten FD to the punch and had a working, multiplayer Alpha? In general I suspect we might not be.

I'm not sure. I don't think it matters who got what Alpha out first. All we can do is speculate. ED deserves a lot more credit that what has been given them.

Who is they? Nervous clueless kids on the forums?
Official "attitude" is very friendly, as CR and DB are friends and support each other. There's also a video of CR and DB talking together about their games and I think that CR even wrote a letter to his audience about ED to invite them to support it.

You're right, it doesn't. Try explaining that to a raging fanboy though. ;)

In actuality though, I think coming second might be better as you could see how your competitor is doing, examine the reaction of their fanbase, and pick and chose the elements in their design that work and apply them to your own.

I've backed both games and I don't read the forums at SC as much because of raging 12 yr old's. Both games are great. Both DEV teams are awesome. AND BOTH GAMES WILL BE DIFFERENT. They are suppose to be. Why in the world would I WANT them to be the same? That would be a waste of money I can't afford. I want them to be different. Similar, yeah. But definitely different. I am sure both finished projects will be great. Both David and Chris both do indeed back each other and have been friends for many years. Both have made great games we all loved playing growing up. I'm 60 and been in computers for 43 yrs so I've been gaming for a day or two anyhow, LOL. I wish both of them were coming out yesterday! ;)

This seems to be a relatively popular view of their forums. I wonder if they are aware of this? I don't visit their often either but when I do they come across as this. Comments regarding the ED forums seem to be around it being more polite and members tending to be older.

Clueless is right it's almost ironic that I found this in their wallpaper section

I wonder how their fanboys would rage if they realize this is a ***stake(it's a changed Daikatana ad)

And when all is said and done a large part of any MMO is the community given the current tone on their forums how much fun will theirs be?

Be Elite Fans

I have noticed a fair few comments relating to SC fans appearing here. Listen folks, could we please get back to talking about Chris's game rather than it's fan base?

Regardless what some might think of Elite Dangerous or even this place on the SC forums, we don't want a situation were both forums are simply slagging each other off. All that ever does is create a lot of bad feeling in both communities.

Now I cant do much about what happens over there, that's a matter for the SC mods to look at if they choose to do so, but I sure as heck can and will do something about it here if it continues.

So please folks, lets rise above this and stick to talking about Star Citizen itself in this thread. It's better for you, it's better for the forum and above all, better for the Elite Community.

Lets try and be an example for others to follow. We are all "Elite" fans at the end of the day, elite not only in the sense we like the Elite games, but also in our thoughts and deeds on this great forum.

Remember folks, the gaming world is watching these forums, so lets show them something that I have known for years; Elite fans are the best you will find in any gaming community!

Thanks :)

That looks pretty darn good if you ask me, the attention to detail is impressive.

At the moment it is too early to games and either way they both look like they are going to be excellent, which is a good thing for space sim fans. I am definitely going to try this game out when it releases.

That's a good speech :)
I wish luck to CIG team in developing the DFM.

With all this talk of clans and guilds clogging up the forums, I thought it would be interesting to create an Organisation in Star Citizen. It's aimed at people who are likely to be playing both games.

If I'm left in charge it will probably flump like a windle, so if anyone wants to get involved, let me know.

Ha ha, I'd just logged onto the RSI site and wondered who'd created that one. :p

With all the fuss about guilds here, I thought it was worth a chuckle. Strongly suspect it will fail unless someone else takes over, but thought I'd at least get the 'Elite' page before anyone else did.

Well, if it's just a casual collection of a bunch of people from here it shouldn't need much management at all. The entrance criteria is satisfyingly old-fashioned - no casual footwear in the member's lounge! ;)
