General / Off-Topic The Train Thread

I've seen a few people post about the interest in trains on here and wanted to start a post so we can all geek out about this!

I [heart] trains. My dad used to take me to see them and my favourite picture of us is when he took me to meet Thomas the Tank, you know the full size ones? A Billingon 0-6-0 I think.

My favourite is the Class 08 Shunter, the raw power is just so impressive to me and I think shunters are the behind the scenes heros of railways! As for model railways, I don't have a layout right now but I hold dear one of my favourite items I own, a gold plated Hogwarts Express by Hornby.

Looking forward to hear your favourites and stories!

The only thing I know about trains is that our french TGV is super cool [big grin]

That's all, thanks, bye [big grin]

I think it is only natural to be a train fan and into theme parks after all Disney started with a small scale steam engine in his backyard then he wanted a small park for his engine in Burbank and that turned into Disneyland! I have had trains of all scales since I was a child but presently do not have one set up. Otherwise on the train front I'm working on a documentary on the 1900's Morenci Southern Railroad it was unique because in 18 miles the train went up 5 loops and gained 1500' in elevation. Also as a child I used to play on this 4-8-8-4 Big Boy that is now being rebuilt in preparation to be used again for events.

OH MY... That is huge. [shocked]

Yes these were the largest steam locos ever built, known as "Big Boys" there was another one called "Challengers" but these were 2-8-8-2 wheel arrangement. Steam finished in 1949 in the USA and Diesels took over. Other large steam locos ran in China Steam still ran in China up to 2004. There is a Chinese steam loco inside the National Railway Museum at York. The largest British Steam Loco's with the highest tractive effort, were the LMS Coronation Class, There is two still in preservation, Duchess Of Sutherland (still running) and Duchess of Hamilton which had its streamlining added, now in the NRM at York.

It's been a while but I've been a real train enthousiast as a kid, with a Marklin modeltrain and everything. I did tend to prefer electric high speed trains but I love some of the steam engine designs as well. One of my fav locomotives is the crocodile because of it's design: a weird hybrid between steam and electric locomotives.

It's just insane, I would LOVE to see one of these!

This is the video of the trip of the Big Boy from Los Angeles California to where it is being rebuilt in Omaha Nebraska. As a child I used to climb all over this train from the coal car in back to actually crawling into the firebox, I think that was my city version of cave exploration [hehe]

I love this thread! Oh boy, what a giant thing, the Big Boy. Nice video too! What a beast of a steam loc.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Train Museum in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and it was great. A large collection of mighty steam locs, large and smaller ones, and the retired diesel and electric trains from The Netherlands. I have enjoyed a ride on an old history railway line somewhere where I live. It is more like a volunteer project now. After the ride, I was one of the few who stayed a bit longer, and was invited to the storage area by a mechanic, who showed some beautiful steam locs that were being restored.

And I have had the pleasure to ride that Steam train at the Efteling as well! [heart]

I'll see if I can post some pictures of the trains at that museum in the weekend. [yesnod]

Whooo Trains...
I do know a massive amount about Manchester Metrolink and the tube - but have a healthy interest in Heavy Rail apart from the dreaded pacers but I dont think anyone likes those:)

If you want a great YouTube Channel about the tube check out Londinist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A9plKfa79U&list=PLz1JuTRxlXhIYyzEu-M02R64Too01SsPT

The first pic is a pacer, the 2nd is from my home town

Duchess of Sutherland fitted out as the Royal Train is my favourite looking train and carriage compendium, second only to the original Flying Scotsman and its Teak carriages.

My Dad and I started building Hornby layouts when I was young, and at last count had something like 90 odd loco's and some 500 rolling stock. Unfortunately after I had left home, then had a family and kids Dad had to pack it all away and it is all sitting stored away in boxes until the day I can bring them home and build a layout with my son....

Oh and the original HST in BR Intercity livery and the Class 37 diesel are my favourite more modern Locomotives...

Oh btw - I love trains! lol

Cause I love 3D printing and trains,

These are really small:

And these ones are really big (1:45), just didn't have the money to print the whole car :)

Amazing! It's fascinating what you can do with 3D printing today. I also see you made Dutch trains, and some old Dutch ones (the white fronts) as well. :)

WootWoot!!! My pictures have finally arrived at the Planet Coaster Forum Station! [hehe]
It took a bit longer than expected, because of a delay of the train of the Dutch Railways that was delivering the pictures... [noob]

1. Picture of a small steam train at the Museum Buurt Spoorweg (Museum Neighborhood Railway), Boekelo, The Netherlands. The train makes trips of aprox. 6.5 km from Haaksbergen to Boekelo on Sundays during the summer. It was great to travel with the train, complete with authentic small station, train warehouse with trains that were being restored to their former glory, and train personnel.

2. The same train as picture 1. but now on board and heading for the station at Boekelo.

3. Pictures taken at the beautiful Spoorwegmuseum (Railway Museum) in Utrecht, The Netherlands. There are a lot more trains to discover, also diesel and electric ones, but there is a magnificent collection of steam trains. There even is a carriage that used to belong to the royal family of The Netherlands, during the reign of queen Juliana.

6. Spoorwegmuseum (Railway Museum) in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
This is a picture of the railway switches and signaling levers. The mechanism can be found next to the tracks, but this one was located in a observation tower next to the track.

7. Spoorwegmuseum (Railway Museum) in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
This is one of the old signaling posts.

8. Spoorwegmuseum (Railway Museum) in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
This is a cabinet with a lot of train tickets to different destinations, that were sold a long time ago. It was even upgradable with additional slots, in case more stations were opened.

9. The steam train 'Aagje' in the wonderful themepark Efteling, The Netherlands. There is another beautiful picture of the same train elsewhere in this thread.
This is in fact my only picture of this train. It's about time I do something on that, and get some more pictures of it. [big grin]

10. Riding in one of the carriages of the steam train 'Aagje', in the Efteling, The Netherlands. This is at Station Marerijk, one of the different zones (rijken) of the Efteling.

Thanks for checking out these pictures! Again, I love this thread, just like I love this community! [heart]
