This was way too hard. I originally thought, oh 25, that’s heaps. I’ll do 15 from Australia and add some extras for the rest of the world. Then I had a list of 50 Australian birds to cull to 25. There’s just so many that I would love.

The mighty Stormbird from the Horizon series. Guerilla Games clearly took inspiration from the thunderbird from Native American folklore, sharing its general description of a massive bird, possibly an eagle, with connections to storms and lightning. They're a formidable threat in the skies and on the ground, and they're either really fun to fight or a massive pain, depending on who you ask.

Ok, as an avid zoo birder, here's my list of 25 must-have bird species:

  1. White-faced whistling-duck
  2. Palawan peacock-pheasant
  3. Victoria crowned-pigeon ***
  4. American (Caribbean) flamingo
  5. Red-crested turaco ***
  6. European white stork
  7. Shoebill
  8. Hamerkop
  9. Scarlet ibis
  10. Roseate spoonbill
  11. King vulture
  12. Harpy eagle
  13. Eurasian eagle-owl ***
  14. Great hornbill ***
  15. Any bee-eater species
  16. Blue-bellied OR lilac-breasted roller
  17. Laughing kookaburra
  18. Toco toucan ***
  19. Red-legged seriema
  20. Sulphur-crested cockatoo OR cockatiels
  21. Rainbow lorikeet
  22. Hyacinth macaw OR Ara genus macaws (not just the Scarlet)
  23. Bali myna
  24. Superb starling

*** For exotic pigeons and doves, I can see this go to Nicobar pigeon or Luzon bleeding-heart; for turacos, I can also see great blue, Ross's, violet, or white-cheek; for owls, I can see great horned or snowy; for hornbills, I can see northern red-billed, Von der Decken's, rhinoceros, or wrinkled; and for toucans, I can also see keel-billed, red-billed, or even a curl-crested araçari.

Ara macaws are iconic species like blue and golds, military, scarlet, and green-winged (red and green).

Lots of changes, with eagles soaring over macaws to second place, the Top 10 seeing a lot of tons and expanding DRASTICALLY, and now we have TWO reining champs, the long time Meta-Wishlist king, the Secretary Bird and the iconic Toco Toucan at Number one.

To celebrate the return of our big beaked champion, weekly community poll, what are some of your favorite tropical birds from the Amazon??

Macaws, the toco and keel billed toucan, of course the can't-type-it-out-of-the-rock top my list.

Some favorite Amazon birds are:

  1. the “adult bird of the rock” it’s so pretty with its orange color
  2. Hoatzins are some of my favorite weird birds
  3. For the typical pretty birds, I’m a big fan of scarlet macaws and scarlet ibis.
  4. For birds of prey the harpy is the coolest, but I like the king vulture too.
