We're almost 2/3rds of the way of hitting the goal of 100 participants by Summer DLC season! So keep spreading the word! Because the bird is the word!

While ducks continue to dominate the list, vultures saw a tremendous boost just missing the Top 5 spot. Macaws, owls, turkeys, and penguins all saw some big jumps.

But the biggest surprise this week is the Toco Toucan has indeed been dethroned as the highest rated individual, replaced by the most requested bird on the official, @random goat 's Meta-Wishlist:

Hard to choose, but I'd say owls. When I think of an owl, I think of a wise person who lives in the woods enjoying a cup of tea and going to the library (like Owl from Winnie the Pooh). But, at the same time, I also see owls as silent killers, perfect for getting rid of targets...

Actually, now imma make a character where he's a wise, calm guy, but he's also secretly an elite hitman (hitbird)

Eagles in general, and harpy eagles are my favorite species.

Eagles are just so majestic. And harpies in particular are so intelligent, beautiful and strong.

Probably the secretary bird, California condor, bald eagle or harpy eagle. All so hard to pick from

I'm going to exploit this rule a little, sorry in advance, it's just that birds is such a diverse group and it's so behind mammals at this stage of the game...

Woah, lots of sacrifices had to be made, even with the new 20 species limit and using lots of generic votes! 😅 No rockhopper penguin, no kiwi, no heron, no condor or any other vulture, no falcon, no secretary bird, no grey parrot, no lory, no parakeet, no bird of paradise or magpie or any other songbird...

List with no preference order, I mostly followed the taxonomy.

Alright, I hadn't yet added my extra 5 and that number is ideal to include those species I regretted leaving behind in my first post!

21. Rockhopper penguin
22. Goliath heron
23. Ruppell's vulture
24. Bird of paradise (any)
25. Magpie (any)

Do you think budgerigars and Himalayan monal can be added into categories like how caracara is in hawk, cockatiel in cockatoo, magpie goose in goose, or various waterfowl are in duck, despite all these examples being distinct taxonomic groups? Kingfisher and kookaburra could be merged as well.

Speaking of which, caracaras are more closely related to falcons, if I remember correctly. Kestrel should also definitely be in the falcon category, they even share the same genus.

There could be more examples that I've missed at first glance. The list can benefit from some fine tuning to its categories, now that it is getting quite large.

Thank you for the feedback and constructive criticism!

Budgerigar, kookaburra, and the Himalayan monal will all remain as separate categories due their frequent idiosyncratic votes and noted status as a "zoo icon/staple".

I struggled to place the Caracara - I know it's a falcon, but looks very much looks like a hawk, and my research gave me the impression they tend to be lumped with hawks, despite the fallacy. I'll properly move them with falcons but if they continue to get more votes, I will give them their own category as nominate species.

I'll also add the Kestrel to the falcon slot!

As for the ducks, I'll be frank, I'm trying to make this list as accessible as possible - so I made the executive decision to include all of Anatidae (save for Anserinae - geese and swans) in the duck category.
Half a dozen seperate slots for shelducks, whistling ducks, diving ducks, etc, would create imo unnecessary clutter and be confusing for participants not fully familiar with proper taxonomy, and above all, it would really divide the duck vote.

The community wants ducks. I want ducks. And I will do everything in my power to make that abundantly clear to the powers that may be.
Dividing them up for taxonomical purposes just feels counterproductive to me in terms of the bigger picture of getting the community's desires of a duck (whatever kind) in the game.

As for the magpie goose, I genuinely had no idea they weren't considered a true goose.

Cockatiel will remain within the cockatoo category as its considered a subfamily within the cockatoo family.

If there's any other birds you feel that need fine tuning feel free to tell me! :giggle:

Also, @sympatrick , VOTE!

I want ducks too; just recommended a similar approach for other birds, like including monals and tragopans in pheasants, so they aren't lost at the bottom of the list. I'm fine with all the lumping as is, just think there needs to be more of such broad categories.

And vote, I shall:

1) White-tailed sea eagle
2) Eastern imperial eagle
3) Hooded vulture
4) Eurasian eagle-owl
5) Black kite
6) Common buzzard
7) Pink-backed pelican
8) Roseate spoonbill
9) Shoebill
10) Magpie goose
11) Mandarin duck
12) Whooper swan

20) Little blue penguin
21) Western capercaillie
22) Atlantic puffin
23) Blue-and-yellow macaw
24) Grey parrot
25) Gang-gang cockatoo
