I really don't think I would say anything like that so I don't think it happened, plus if you want to make accusations like that, it's more effective if you have visible evidence .-.

You'd be right... if I was trying to convince you. I'm not though. I really don't mind what you believe. :)

Well, finally managed to get around some errors and get beta installed. Figured "what the hell, it's beta, I'll play in open." Hadn't played in a while so forgot where I'd left my python, found it sitting on a planet in the Orrerre system. Had a look at the map and figured I'd go to Wyrd to check out the engineers. Some player tried to interdict me just as I approached Wyrd A2 so I just flew into the planet and let the orbital cruise thing break the interdiction... no problem... but the base I needed was on the other side of the planet so I climbed and supercruised again to fly round the planet. While doing this I saw a USS and it came up with something about "weapons fire detected" on it.. was just trying to read it when who should appear but that same player. OK whatever... of course he's in a Fed Corvette vs my Python so I didn't stand a chance, so I let him blow me and appeared back at the station in Orrerre again... and THAT'S why I changed to solo for the beta. It was just a senseless attack for no reason... he was obviously hanging out at Wyrd coz that's where an engineer is so he knew players would go there, there was no piracy demand and no challenge (even if I'd bothered trying to fight back), I wasn't wanted, and I wasn't carrying any cargo... it was just a kill for lulz because I was a hollow square and because it didn't cause the attacker any grief. Sure it's beta and I don't care, but it's a perfect example of why the whole pve vs pvp thing is still an issue, and of why pvpers can't find targets.

One of the main devs.

Well, I went to Wyrd myself and the experience I had was that no player interdicted me. A lot of people asked me for a fight to test their builds, but I was suffering from the Save Failed: Access Denied bug (now fixed with an entire reinstall and restart) and the fact I was relearning the controls after a while away, so I declined and nobody forced the issue.

Also, hey Julio, if we see each other again, I will duel; but I am a terrible PVP'er (but I do have a buffed ship, now).

So, I counter your single experience with my single experience. Except, crucially, I accept that I am not quite the center of the universe and my experience is not indicative of the experience of all.

That's nice for you. So what?

This forum user-base is predominantly PvE, with discussions revolving around that and generally lesser-PvP minded. Without even looking at the results - i'm going to assume that's already being reflected on this poll.

...but why not both as an option? [wink]

Exactly, i am mainly trader, smuggler, in private groups, so Pve mainly, but sometimes i go to open and then PvP is unavoidable, and sometimes i do enjoy the odd skirmish with other players. So both for me.

Really, that's the play you're going to go with?

You use one example and from that you extrapolate that your entire dislike of Open is justified and you can bring yourself up to your full 5'3 with righeous proof of your position.

I give an alternate experience and.... you give me that?

It's truly, remarkable. Other people will judge you as they will.

I gave an example of WHY PvE vs PvP is still an issue after 2+ years. The exact same thing didn't happen to you at the exact same place... so what? Did I claim it happened every time anyone went to Wyrd? Did I claim that every experience in open was bad? You're building strawmen... stop being silly.

I thought wyrd had a CG on at the moment. We also into phase 2 - which is designed for people to actually shoot each other to take on the frankly impossible task of balancing the effects of the weapons. I think the next phase is even more so.

Alas the Sidewinder I am in really is not up to the task of phase 2, so I have dropped out of the beta and will rely on others to do the balancing.

Simon
I'd encourage you to get back in there.

It's really important that sideys can still run. If they're left utterly vulnerable and defenceless then the balance has failed - boosting off, ducking and diving a sidey is a tiny target and Should be hard to get.

Similar experience. Wiped one of my CMDRs and decided to play the beta as a noob in Open. Spent about 90 minutes pootling around fringe systems, hardly saw another soul. Jumped to Shinrarta for my first upgrade, immediately blown up by a CMDR in a Clipper (it might even have been a Cutter, I literally had no time to even look at the HUD detail, just the basic Imperial shape. But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that it was "only" a Clipper).

Heavy Imperial gun platform vs. stock Sidewinder. Good test, good test.

This was before Phase 2.

This is why I stick to Solo or Group. I know not everyone is an idiot, but one idiot is one idiot too many for me even in the "popular" systems; YMMV. Core systems should not be off limits due to lack of consequences. If this behaviour ever gets pushed into the lawless systems where it belongs, I might reconsider. But I think we all know there's next to zero chance of that.

Got to say, I'm amazed at how long this thread has lasted. I gave it an hour and it's been four days. Same old arguments, inevitably, but no lock. Colour me impressed.

That's the thing isn't it? It's often quipped that we're "scared of a griefer behind every star"... of course we know that isn't the case, that most PvPers are decent people... but even if only 5% of them aren't, you KNOW they're gonna be in the places you want to go the most, and that's still enough to ruin your day for no reason when you can play in group or solo instead and never meet them and realistically lose NOTHING of importance that you can't find in Mobius without that 5% bothering you.

As you say... put some significant consequences in for that sort of behaviour and I'll reconsider, but till then I see no reason to be in open.

Yep, my stance exactly. I won't be content for some coward bully who is risking nothing to spread misery and grief. Put in some risks on their end too, even up the risk balance, and then I'll consider going back to open. Until then, it's private groups for me.

The poll has skewed even more towards PvE. I gotta say it's even more lopsided than I expected it to turn out.

hehehe yeah, doncha love it when they start talking about "Risk vs reward"... oh yeah, well where's YOUR risk, mister grief-conda while slaughtering that hauler? You must have got a WHOLE bunch of reward for putting your Corvette at risk attacking that sidewinder!

Yeah, it's 5:1 one now... but it's ALL because the big mean PvE-ers have scared them off the forums... not because it's actually more popular, right?

I have two profiles. As Zin I mostly play in open but don't look for PVP encounters. Being into PP and with AD I have experienced encounters with PVPers but I still play in open mostly. In my other profile I play in a private group and will be doing some PVP but with other group members and with matched ships.
Open does not equate to PVP and Solo/Group does not equate to PVE. The Open/Solo debate and the PVP/PVE debate are two entirely different debates.
The game is mostly designed for PVE given it is a new version of a game that was create before PVP was possible. PVE requires a ship build for that purpose so is either a Trade build or a BH/CZ build (Ok mining and exploration as well). PVE ship builds can, mostly, not compete in a PVP battle and never will.

I can understand why some people complain about what others do or don't do but this is an MMO. You are always going to have differences of opinion. Personally I love the fact that I have a choice of play mode and style and though it is inconvenient at times, when you get killed and loose a fortune, but excuse the irony, I can live with it.

I have to say that most CMDRs are role playing and even griefers and pirates can be nice people in real life though possibly some are not.

... and reddit's very anti-pve. So? The reason the forum's so anti-PvP is because the PvPers used to come in here demanding that other modes get shut down, and that people get punished for playing anything but open which led to HUGE flame wars. The numbers in this poll are higher than ever, but even when the mode threads were popping up every day and getting merged into uber threads it was still 2-3 times as many PvE-ers.

Yah, and likely never played as well. That's called vote padding.

Thanks for confirming what I have seen said here about perceived forum / reddit bias.
My point is the poll on reddit is pretty close to the poll here. Pve @~80%.
I just thought it was strange that Reddit is supposedly more pvp centric but has a very similar pattern of votes.

Any chance of a link to that poll?

It would make me very happy after the "forum PvE bias makes this worthless, would be totally different if REAL playerz voted" line that's been hammered

If that's the case then FDev really should pay attention - that's becoming a vast majority of your users in an increasingly representative vote.

Please, please don't focus on more PvP toys - we want more galaxy not more guns.
