The Vive discussion Thread

Greetings CMDRs,

I'm waiting my Vive delivery (May) and I'm currently following many topics related to Elite with Vive.
There seems to be an issue currently with the resolution (ED or SteamVR fault ?).
I came accross these topics on reddit/r/Vive and wants to know if anyone have tried this fix (not directly related):

- https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4ekgwv/i_cant_play_elite_dangerous_in_vr/

"Don't have SteamVR running at all. Just start Elite 64bit and go into settings. Video setting to HMD (headphone or not) and the quality settings as you see fit depending on PC build. That's all I've been doing. If it gives you trouble, turn it away from the HMD setting and exit the game. I'd reboot (just to be sure) then fire up just the game (no steamVR) and go into settings, set to HMD"

Any feedbacks about it ? Already tried ?

Thanks for your replies.

EDIT : Question is to understand if issue comes from SteamVR or ED.

We may need to trudge back a bit through the thread to get a full picture.. I've been trying to wrap my head around this issue the past day or two and have read back a bit myself... I have a Vive on preorder and I too was concerned. I am jumping to VR quickly because of Elite, nothing else. So if there are issues out the door, to me the concern is warranted.

My grasp is this so far - but anyone please correct me if I am wrong:

It seems to me this is a problem with Elite and not the Vive or SteamVR. I have seen two things.. the first is rather minor. The second is more worrying.

1> There are a few ways to start elite, and a few ways not to (explained in your links) - probably a code fix needed as to how Elite detects VR
2> Vive users are reporting graphical issues, such as lower res/artifacts when compared to VR quality in Oculus. - probably code fixes needed for Elite.

The unique issue with ED IMO is that so many important objects are small so often. Really tiny things are not the forte of gen 1 VR, so trying to visually spot things like planetary outposts feels like a strain. Though again that might be more related to the sub-par resolution in ED more than the headset. Not sure. I will hold out hope that once the resolution and settings issues are fixed, the visual clarity on small objects will fix itself.

Just Role Play your commander has bad eye sight. Bam! More immersion.

I got my shipping confirmation today so I'll have the Vive on Friday!!! I can't believe that this is still one giant thread here. Is there another forum for ED and Vive that we can actually talk about things? This used to be a great place to get VR info but now.... :(

Issues will be fixed in time. No one ever promises perfection out of the box. If they did, you wouldn't believe it anyway.

You may not realize it, but Frontier has one of the best technical support staffs ever. They are dealing with a globally distributed real time MMO with 1.45 million accounts on a game map with 400+ billion systems. They have embraced VR since day one (along with other advanced technologies) and made miracles happen so far IMHO. The Vive is supported and they have already said if you are having issues getting it to work, send in a support ticket. They will work with you to get it both operational and optimized.

The FDevs take a lot of (largely undeserved) stick over bugs and the like, but they do fix the issues in time. Elite is an incredibly complex project and you have to have done computer game design to appreciate just how involved it is. The FDevs are pros and want to put out the best product they can. What's in front of you now is a testament to their drive and professionalism.

The whiners, complainers and generally impatient have no concept of the amount of work the FDevs are doing to not only maintain the code base, but build on it with more features to come. This project isn't a sprint, it's an Ironman Triathlon.

Is anyone using the Vive together with an AMD card?
I got a Vive on it's way to me (yay). I have a very decend rig:
Intel i7 3770K @ 4.7ghz
16GB RAM
AMD Fury X

The problem is that elite does not run very well on AMD cards sadly. Performance was not so great with the DK2.
I hear it is a non issue with the rift and asyncronous timewarp but how is it with the vive? Does the Vives variation of reprojection even work with ED?
How is performance with AMD cards?

Sorry to be a bit off topic here, but how are you getting 4.7ghz out of a 3770k? I haven't been able to get mine above 4ghz.

Cancelled my Vive order today. So that should move some of your newer orders up the list.
I encourage everyone to cancel their order. I want mine NOW. [yesnod]

Then I'll publish a vid on how great it is and you can all reorder. [haha]

I agree with this, which is why I have not cancelled my Vive order or changed my mind on my VR path. I'm certainly familiar with massive enterprise scale complex systems, products and dev environments through my career... so have that perspective to bring into the fold. I'm sure it'll all get worked out by them given time, as long as they don't cut staff and increase work load as is the business norm for where I am LOL.

Back on topic, VR is major new tech... we're not dealing with another revision of a graphics card or some such. FD committed to supporting both VR headsets, so we're good on that front. I just hope they fix the graphical anomalies faster than they fix mission anomalies ;P When I say 'concerned' I mean it concerns me that it'll potentially be buggy when I first get my VR in hand... its a selfish concern as I want to play ED in VR *NOW* haha :) . I can live with quirks for a while, as long we're kept informed and told its being actively worked on.

I ran into a lot of threads out there... looks like its a mixed bag. Some are playing fine, others are seeing issues. One persons workaround/suggestion in some thread I ran across was to turn your in-game UI to green rather than the default orange. It appeared to immensely improve text readability. Wish I could find the link now...

Onwards and upwards.. quirks or no, VR is here and it'll only get better.

I agree with the above. The last proper revision of Elite was released on the day Oculus got released and they have in no way had a proper chance to get this game up to speed where consumer VR is concerned.
Delays in SDKs and indeed, SDKs being in their infancy does not allow you to just plow your resources into it and hope for the best.

I'm pretty sure that now both the Oculus and Vive are released to consumers and now that consumers are finally actually getting their hands on the units that FDEV will give this some more love and work on getting the best out of the respective hardware.

Room scale blew me away. Takes some setting up. Straps will take some getting used too.
Cannot comment on res etc as not taken covers off tracker and lens yet after a dvi conflict with telly needed headset on HDMI. Cables a mess at the moment. Hand sets dont seem to firmware upgrade with usb 3. Needed a beer.

I'm surprised that it took a week. I predicted the first 3 days.

Anyway, this issue regarding ED and the Vive is all over Reddit, so hopefully we'll see a fix sooner rather than later. It's really cramping my enjoyment of the game. Might just switch back to playing on my 34" 21:9 1440p monitor. It's not VR, but I can see things clearly and performance is exceptional 100% of the time.

What's the game at 14:33 with the grapple hook? That looks like a fun game. I hope it comes to Oculus when the touch controllers are ready to sell.

??? You must be pretty new to VR, That is Windlands available already and works on DK1 DK2 CV1 VIVE
It's fun, but it can be intense in some areas, high levelled areas. Youtube is full of videos.
I have a F cristal to take, but the position is breath taking and easy to slide off the platforms

wow...
what an enthusiastic bunch :(

yeah, have to skip their faces, but they bring out issues that they might be for the early adopters of both HMD.
