The Vive discussion Thread

Valve/HTC will be announcing a "VR" keyboard soon. You heard it here first. Works with the new integrated camera and a positional tracking. Basically the camera tracks your fingers (blue "ghost" fingers as seen through the Vive) with an in app "overlay" of a positionally tracked keyboard. It brings real world objects, in this case a keyboard, into apps/games/etc.
Imagine looking left and the old BBC micro keyboard pops up in VR right into your FOV.

I'm waiting to see someone trying to touch type with it. Sorry, couldn't resist <grin>

Dont forget being able to see objects around you, answer your phone in game, etc. This in all ways seems like the better purchase unless you just fanboy the Oculus for no reason other than faith.

Sometimes simple solutions are better than the technological ones. If you want to do real world stuff then the best way to do it is by taking the helmet off. A VR helmet that's easy to wear and remove would be preferable in that case.

I'm not exactly an Oculus fanboy, more a Carmack fanboy. But I still can't decide which headset to plump for.

I haven't read this whole thread by now... what config is needed to run E : D with the Vive. I have the DK2 and run E : D with the normal desktop installation (i.e. not through Steam). Will that be working or do I have to change something - despite installing Vive drivers later? This would shorten the waiting time from monday to final release. :)

Regards,
Rhombus

But will it support a BBC Model B layout virtually located on the user's left side? :D

Not interested in either of those things - I'm only going to play seated experiences and don't want/need to see objects. Also, I'm not a slave to my phone - people can leave messages and I'll get back to them.

The integrated headphones makes putting the headset on and taking it off so easy that this suits me much more - fanboy, or simply evaluating the elements that are important to me and making an educated decision?

Also the Rift CV1 is lighter and more comfortable than the Vive. Flying for hours in a CV1 sounds more comfortable than in a Vive.

Probably depends on how thick your neck muscles are. No problem for Popinski.

£750? Yeah.... no...

no..... I..... no.

The thing about that price is that it doesn't tell you anything about the total cost of ownership. If the steam games are cheaper and/or the Oculus Touch is expensive then the two prices could end up closer than you think.

And of course you've got to factor in how much selling your soul to Zuckerberg's worth.

Red erring. Weigh does not matter so much as balance and weight distribution.

NVGs are mostly metal, and weight quite a bid more than HMDs, yet the way the weight is distributed on a wearer's head are still comfortable.

In the case of HDMs. well balanced differences of 100 grams or so won't matter one iota.

But it makes for good press and used as false flags.

Mm but what about games where you need to see the keyboard .

My preorder is in.
Very disconcerting when the countdown hit zero and then NOTHING HAPPENED for 4 munutes..
Which will arrive first, Vive or Rift I wonder?

Rift probably - I've already had the KS "update your details" message through so it looks like they're going to ship in March as planned. Although I guess it depends where you are on the order list for each.

Wonder if all this recent pricing info has put a slighly better price on my DK2?
I know if I was just dipping my eyes in the VR world for the first time I would be more tempted with a used DK2 for starters.

Well, those people that were annoyed about the Rift price and assumed the Vive would be coming in lower - they're likely now in the market for a Rift if they want some VR. :)

Indeed. I've had no such email so I must be way behind you.

Standard shipping is £4. Don't listen to the those who rushed through the checkout and missed the select shipping option.

Grrr! I started filling in the order right away. Then at the completion of the order it says "Sorry out of stock"
I go back to the cart and it says in stock ... I check my paypal activity and no charges so I place order again. This time order is placed but delivery is in May instead of April.
Noooo
;-)
So price wise for Australians?, Turns out the 899us they pre announced did include GST. As the purchase price is actually 817us + 110 for shipping to Aus(as expensive as oculus for the shipping)
Add GST to the 817 and its a tad under 899us
Gawd in aussie dollers this is one pricey device. I hope my enthusiasm can overcome VR sickness hehe
