The Vive discussion Thread

Thanks Jake but I own the frontier version of EDH, I had owned ED long before I think it hit steam. I'm very-much trying to figure out how to configure. It should be using OSVR but I don't have any clue how to get it working. If anyone knows the process, i'd really appreciate it.

I am am still fairly sure you need stream VR running, even though you did not buy it from steam.
i think the Vive needs the steam software to work properly. The Vive is shared by HTC and steam. HTC made the hardware, and steam made the software. I think you should definitely give it a go!

I'm in the UK. Guessing it's more efficient to send 500 units in bulk to a distribution centre rather than ship 500 individual units. So hoping we'll get them all around the same time regardless of order date

I only placed the order 2 weeks ago

i really hope your right, I will be really miffed if you get yours on the 5th and I don't. I ordered seconds after launch, you ordered two weeks ago. Still no email yet!
and I have booked the week off work starting on the 5th!

Given that the Vive is collaboration between Steam and HTC, I think you will need to run ED through Steam to get VR to work. You can get a free steam key from the frontier store (or support)

I would hold off getting that Steam key if it's not something you want. I'm running my DK2 using SteamVR but I don't have a Steam key for Elite. I just downloaded the SteamVR add-on from within Steam, and it works even when using Frontier's own launcher.

Edit... forgot to say...

If you do find you need it you can always ask for it then

That sounds good, I didn't know that was an option :)

First, you do not need to have Elite installed in any of the front end stores (Oculus or Steam).

However you do need at least one of those stores to be installed (Steam or Oculus) in order for the runtimes to use the DK2.

Until tomorrow:

Install Oculus SDK 0.8
Install Steam, enable betas in settings
Instal SteamVR (Steam Library tools), enable beta builds in properties.

Configure Oculus, and then SteamVR. Close them.

Run Elite, choose the HMD option in graphic settings.

As of Tomorrow:

Install Oculus Store
Configure the DK2
Run the game, Choose HMD option in Graphics.

This email arrived over the weekend. I screenshotted it for everyone. Was not expecting to see anything until they shipped, but here you go.

Still waiting on mine - it would appear that noone in Germany is getting those emails, regardless of when they preordered.

I guess you've read the clarifications on Reddit that this doesn't say anything about when the things will ship, though?

I called HTC customer support today. They confirmed that the vive will be delivered in the first week in April, for those in the first wave. (that's me...yippee)
And I have not received the "it's in the works email", those were sent to people that asked to be kept informed on any news.

I got my order processing email too. My delivery date when I ordered was May (I am in Australia)
What's annoying is the email comes from HTC in Thailand which is just across the pond. On the vive site is says will be shipped from the US. If that is the case, it will go from just near here to way over there and back again hehe.

Anyway I am prepared!!!! Had an electrician in and removed the overhead light fittings and ceiling fan and replaced them with in-ceiling down lights so there are no over obstructions. Not that overhead will be applicable to ED, but better to make room for those HUGE Cockpits. I might want to do jumping jacks on a long journey [yesnod]

One less "Man decapitated by ceiling fan in living room. Strange bondage gear found on head." headline.

And now you've made me want to set up my HOTAS on top of my kids' bunk beds as a virtual Type 9 cockpit complete with lower deck.
