The Vive discussion Thread

Now they talk about a PATCH????

I think VIVE magically will have the TIME WARP in his software, not taken from the development OCULUS, but they will say they developed it!! HAHAHAHA

WHO cares!!!! Now start the competition and drop Prices!! :D :D :D

Don't see why this would affect prices really!?

I notice that the GeForce Experience dealio has a seperate listing for Elite VR and a setting for "HMD Image Quality" and anything less that <1.0 is downscaling. Is that an Elite internal setting for for Steam VR? I wonder if that plays into the current Vive "Elite looks like low rez jank" talk that is going on?

Sort of. What you're looking at is the listing for Supersampling. Anything lower than 1x is rendering at a lower resolution than 1:1 based on the resolution setting.

This is the core of the issue right now: the only setting that has a discernable and significant effect on the resolution IS the Supersampling. But it has to be set to 1.5x or 2x to look reasonably clean. The problem, of course, is that setting Supersampling to 1.5x or 2x takes an incredible amount of system resources as the system is in effect rendering the game at a much higher resolution and downsampling it to fit your monitor's resolution. For the HMD, things are far smoother and become far less blocky and jagged when looking at distant objects. But the power required to push ED at 1.5x or 2x is a level that causes even 980Ti's to drop frames regularly. The Rift has no such issues because FDev set it up to render the game in the HMD through a different process, with 3rd party software like SweetFX being available to users. Such things are not usable for the Vive right now. Until FDev steps up and fixes the VR implementation to bring it in line with the Rift, it will look bad.

Also, stop using Geforce Experience. It's a garbage application.

I've not been keeping up with the forum for a few days and I cam in to express my delight that my VIVE has shipped from Prague and will be with me tomorrow. Then I was confronted by all the 'ED looks terrible on the VIVE' comments ...
Jeez! This life ...
Oh well, I look forward to meeting the Blue Whale at least.

Oh, heavens no, I'm just poking around at some Driver stuff ahead of the Vive arriving today.

HMD Image Quality is not the Supersampling setting though, it GFE lists them both. HMD Image Quality must be coming from Steam VR.

so given the fresnel god/satan rays, poor (current) elite visuals and expectations vs reality.. does anyone regret getting the vive? would like to know especially if you were a dk2 user previously..

Does anyone know how to get rid of the chaperone lines. Using steam VR, under settings it says chaperone on, but it is not clickable.

Vive + ED not playing with T-Flight at the moment
And Yes "god rays" bad on start-up but not managed to fly yet.
Ho-Hum....
Update seems all I have in ED in mouse working k/b etc don't work

lol hello no. Are you crazy? ED is the only game out with visual issues. Vive gaming is magic. DK2 isn't comparable in the slightest. FDev will fix their game. Until then, the experience in this game will be regrettable, but the ownership experience certainly isn't dictated by the performance of a single poorly-optimized game a week after launch. Get a grip.

So is no one else experiencing problem with pluging in the Vive to the header box starting ED and losing all controllers even the k/b just leaving the mouse?
Its only ED that it happens in.

If you have frasnel visible in vive playing elite your eye is not close enough. You have to adjust midle strap nearly to neck and headset to middle of forehead with some weaight on cheeks. For me it was not enough and I moved foam with this plastic thing to outside so "wide face" is visibe from outside and rest holds to velcro. Now If I press vive to my face eyelashes touch laneses. No more visibe frasnel at least to 90 fov where there they not bother me.

for first few days I had vive adjusted like "cap with googles attached" now I have it more like head flashlight and It is much better for me at least.

Also I tested Elite today with oculus compatibility layer https://github.com/LibreVR/Revive and manage to run it. Still desktop settings were the same and in training mission - docking vive image quality was the same. I suppose it still runs natively in Vive. I run it also with War Thunder today and without aa (bug - aa made cockpit invisible) war thunder run and looked beautiful. Sky was clear and planes were visible far away. Only normal SDE reduced their details far away. Comparing it to elite it is like 720p to 360p where here spaceships are pixelated mess with more visible markers around it - inside and green text looks fine for me tho.

Maybe devs will be able to make workaround with compatibility layer.

As far as the whole "low rez vive" storyline goes I'm not quite sure about it now that I've actually spent some time with it. I found a lot of other Vive titles tend to have an AA solutioin that's through the roof, where as Elite doesn't (by default). Elite tends do have really bright edges on sharp lines and that really become noticeable. That and the fact that neutral sitting position, looking straight down the sight puts all your HUD elements into the smeared out (my FOV and lens) peripheral which I need to center my head on to bring into focus.

I fell in love with the Sidewinder again though, that cockpit is so comfy in VR :).

Anyone who has a Vive know what the IPD range is?

About 60mm ~ 74.something. mm

Another quick question. Is everyone with a Vive running ED from within Steam?
As I'm currently using the "wrapper" technique with problems

Do you mean 'having obtained a steam key' by the first case and 'launching a non-Steam game from Steam' by "wrapper"?

What are the problems? I'd rather avoid giving Valve a cut of my ED spend, I think I am compensating them well enough with the Vive and other Steam purchases.
