The Vive discussion Thread

Thanks!!

I don't have that option... must be time to swear at the computer and deprive it of power for a second.

I had the same problem. Exit ED, start SteamVR, make sure the Headset and lighthouses are working are are recognized and then start ED again and see if you have got the option now.

When starting without SteamVR running, it sometimes also seems to not be able to see the Vive. Putting the Vive in plain view of the lighthouse and slighty moving it while ED starts did always get it working in my setup.

If you start Elite without steamvr, the lighthouses don't auto-boot. This only affects you if you use the "automatic shutdown and startup" feature for the lighthouses. If this happens just unplug and replug both lighthouses. No need to restart Elite or anything.

Got my first taste of Elite in VR on the Vive at lunch. I had to wait for a mini displayport to HDMI cable - used that for my TV (acting as a monitor) used the HDMI out on my card for the Vive and made sure it was powered and all cables plugged in.

Launched Steam VR and got it all green then started Elite - Play (on 2.1 Beta) then Options -> Graphics and set 3D to Headset (headphones) and the quality to VR Low. Damn it I only got a few seconds to look around before I had to go back out but considering it was low settings on a four year old graphics card it looked pretty amazing to me! :D

This is cool : https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4jf12h/howto_configure_and_automatically_switch_between/

So it looks like you can set up 1 or more lighthouses in other rooms and have them work with your current system.

Like have one lighthouse for seated play, then another two elsewhere for a room scale setup. :)

Needs a bit of manual jiggery-pokery but it's cool to know the Vive seems to have been built to support it.

I've thought about this, but never checked to see if it was possible, but does it seem possible that you could "daisy chain" lighthouses in order to cover two or three rooms and a hallway between them? It seems like it would be impossible to have lighthouses in one room completely cut off from lighthouses in another room, since they need to sync with each other (right?), but maybe as long as one lighthouse in each room could see one lighthouse in the "next" room it would work?

As soon as I got my Vive I started imagining lighthouses that were the size of a lime or something, and cost 20 bucks each, and you could put them in every room in your house and the software could redesign every "level" to include going up and down stairs and down hallways and whatnot. With cheap enough and plentiful enough lighthouses it'd be pretty easy to have an "infinite" room scale.

I think having to stop every 2 metres to unplug your PC and move it to a new location then reboot and reload the game you were playing might break the immersion a little though?

Am an Oculus Rift man myself but with a £50 saving compared to ordering from HTC due to no postage, I would be tempted if I had not already put my flag in the sand.

I ordered my Vive from Overclockers. It may have even been you who recommended them to me some time ago. I thought Overclockers were very good. As well as cheaper than direct, they delivered earlier than their original quote and hopefully if I have any issues returning it in country should be easier, especially OC say they have 500 in stock now.

I absolutely love the Vive (out of ammo is my favourite game) however IMHO at this time for ED specifically - the Rift is a class above. I'll get my coat [where is it]

Just a heads-up to others. Overclockers price is slightly higher than the others (there's a surprise...) - the UK price is meant to be £689, and that's the price at Currys/PC World and at Scan.

afaik, they are the only places in the UK that HTC/Valve have teamed with to sell the Vive direct in the UK

That interesting ..... genuinely didn't realise that.

Perfect timing for what I wanted to come in on with the post above me. I wanted to do a High End/Low end update for readers. I ordered a Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 but had my Vive for a week on a GTX 960. Surprisingly, my 960 made for a fairly good experience and I wanted to post my settings:

GTX 960: Use VR Low, adjust down some settings if you experience issues with sickness in stations. If I move my head fast, I will see the frame rate has dropped by looking at the edge of the cockpit against the background. Totally fine experience overall for me though, especially once I changed to green lettering (I used the 'night vision' settings from Reddit). The station frame drop (sorry, I didn't measure) seemed like a small issue since your head movement is slower and more focused when you're landing anyway. I am prone to motion sickness and have experienced a bit playing disconnected movement games like Windlands, so I'm guessing that if I can run ED with zero sickness, most people would be fine.

GTX 1080: I'm pleased to say that YES, it will brute force past the issues. Set settings to VR high, render at 1.5X and set AA to MSAA. You can raise all graphics settings to high, but leave shadows at medium and the Galaxy Map on low. I raised some settings related to terrain to Ultra. Gorgeous experience with these settings, and will completely eliminate aliasing. I tried at 1.0X and 4xAA and the aliasing difference is noticeable with either move, but not terrible if someone appreciates a couple of other settings bumped to Ultra as a trade off. I did change text back to green, but the red text SEEMED a little sharper. I'm guessing that a fix to aliasing should enable bumping most settings to Ultra once and for all.

PLease don't flame the noob, but can someone post a REALLY basic beginner's guide to setting up the Vive with ED? Does ED have to be transferred to Steam library to play it in VR? I've started SteamVR in the background and launched ED as usual but I cannot find any options related to VR. Sorry for being crap. Any help appreciated

You don't need to install it through steam ;). Just launch Steam VR (installed in Steam) and then when you launch the game go into the Graphics and click the + to open the options until you Find 3d. Select HMD Speakers or Headphones and it should load in VR for you ;)

That option doesn't appear. That's what I find most confusing...

Exactly this. Its very easy to get up and running. Just make sure to set VRLow or VRHigh depending on your spec and start out with 1.0x supersamping (bump up later only if your hardware can handle it). I'd also suggest enabing the SRV horizon leveling option in the graphics settings. It basically causes your view to always level with the horizon when driving around on planets. Its not perfect, but it helps a TON with nausea. With the setting off you will be bouncing all over the place and the motion sickness can get pretty nasty. If you get framerate jitters from having supersampling too high that too can lead to barf city. So unlike in non VR games where I tend to set everything to max, then back off until I like it. In VR I start on the low spectrum, then nudge upwards.

i7-6700k/GTX970 (both OC'd) steam score 8.5-8.6 - VRHigh 1.0xss. 1.5xss doesn't work very well for me unfort. Very jittery in stations especially.

Try setting the game to windowed mode, then setting for VR. Maybe that'll help?

Many thanks. I got it working but it's very jittery whenever I move my head. I am on VR High but my machine scored 10.9 in SteamVR (32GB DDR4; i7 5930; x2 980Ti). Does 'VR High' change all the settings or do I have to do it manually?

Disable SLI as ED does not support it, all it does its harm your frame rate.

You will have better frames/sec with one card apparently.
