While X series have claimed to be Elite successor, they are *very* different games, because one is dressed up space trade empire strategic game, and another one is true sand box open world game, which concentrates more on you as pilot experience.

XR looks nice in videos and screenshots, but it's universe is quite limited (planets are prerendered, you can't go around them, you won't be able to visit them, they have made "sectors" less jarring though). Said that though in some of previews I liked that they have made enviroment "alive" with all NPCs busy in their works, flying around stations, transporting goods - very important aspect in "Elite: Dangerous" too.

So in reality there's no overlap. Play XR to command huge trade fleets, and figure out your next step for galaxy dominance. Play ED for that sole human being experience being in ship, flying around and doing almost everything you can in space game - and much more.

Exactly... also, compared to the earlier X games, Rebirth is very limited: Only one ship to fly/upgrade, only 4 sectors with a couple 100 places to visit (each station has different modules, so that's not that much)... very different game.

The best on in the series was X2... it was horribly complicated and awkward to play, but you could do the most stuff.

I'd agree - I also liked playing with the scripting once I completed X2. Not sure having an Argon Titan with a top speed of 500 is playing fair though :)

I always played xseries from x2 up to the latest in vannilla mode. So my experience was. Lot of features some very much liked extended features like boarding.
But so much gameplay types it offers but the interface lacked decent support for it and is very non efficient more barriere to reach core game mechanics and even unfinished or lavking interfaces for specific uses.

So I choose to play it in those field that was somewhat playable.

I prefere the capital ship play but was implemented badly and limited.
Carrier play well you could choose to use it but not implemented fully.
Fleet controle well its a option but no well optimised interface for that.

AI is limited more percived as stupid. And capitl ship some way to big for the gates.

But in the X3 wenn the introduced boarding well that was fun. Collecting capitals.
As I aint a trader.

Xrebirth wil be much more different. I will persive it as a realy new type of game using the franchise as theme. The changes are huge and almost everything changes. That is also a big risk. To alienate the current fanbase. As it will be very much different beast.

With 8 years of development I expect more well worked out interfaces a better AI a more finished game with this time also more polished game and more quality.

But if there choices fit my preferences. Well I know it wenn I play it. I know old xseries not this new game.

Well I have been trying to play Rebirth, and Jesus H Christ is it terrible. It seems like a really early alpha, and it is utterly unplayable.

Makes me even more excited about Dangerous now. I really hope they don't try the Egosoft way of dumbing it down. Frankly sandbox space combat trading games just are not suited to casual gamers.

I think you can deliver X4 games for casual games, and Elite is good example. It is just very hard. For me it seems that FD are trying just to do that. I personally want to see lot of casual players enjoying vastness of universe and free from play ED will offer. It won't be for everyone, but at least it should be accessible enough for them to try.

I've been trying to play Rebirth too, and I concur it's a horrible mess. I even dusted down the old joystick (a Logitech Extreme Pro 3D) for the occasion, only to find within 10 frustrating minutes of fiddling with the settings that there was no point. Joysticks don't work. So I dusted down the old Xbox 360 controller (can you tell I don't play many games?) and that was marginally better - however pretty much everything is in reverse. More fiddling with the settings.

Game itself. The graphics being "colourful" being one description. "Garish" is another. They've taken the decision to make Space big (admirable) - but then chucked in a big floating "highway" type system, with a silly minigame involved. The NPCs are stupid, and will simply insult you if you ask directions to find a merchant. Nice.

Voice acting - well, I turned the voice volume down to zero after ten minutes. 'Nuff said.

Disappointed more than anything. I really wanted to like this game, I've played & enjoyed every single X game since the original (X2: The Threat was the best of the bunch) and was hoping that this would tie me over at least until beta. In truth, I doubt it'll interest me as far as alpha. The piecemeal parts of the game we'll get then will be better than this in its entirety.

There is a lot that FD can learn from this - it's more or less an ABC on how not to do it. The highways being the big one IMO - thank goodness we changed FD's mind on that and we're getting proper "free flight". Interesting that the comments I've seen say "maybe Star Citizen will be better". Sorry, but E: D is going to blow them all out of the water if it sticks to the plan.

Meanwhile, 50 euros wasted. :(

I was looking forward to X:R as well and am totally disappointed.

Frontier: Please take your time to finish the game properly, even if it means to delay the release date!

X:R is barely not playable from technical point of view and annoying from gameplay point of view. Sad!

There is a lot of anger on several forums regarding X: Rebirth. It has been getting a pretty hard caning on the Steam and SC General forum, but the fact that it is not well received on its own home forums is telling indeed.

Most posts run along the same lines - technical glitches, limited joystick support, and removal of familiar features. I've played it for about 6 hours now, the first 2 of which were tuning the HOTAS mappings. I've had 1 crash, but that could have been me changing controllers mid-game.

I don't mind the game, but it is sort of boring with some really poor features. Some games are compelling from the first moments and suck away many hours of your life. Rebirth is absolutely not in this category. It also contains some really lame features that add nothing. I have a feeling Egosoft were hoping to create a game to please everyone and instead are pleasing almost noone. I'll probably play it occasionally, but I can't see it ever becoming a favourite.

Luckily they are doing. There's an extended "gamma" period following beta, where backers get access... prior to retail release.

Welcome to the forum.

It looks like after 7 years of development hell, the devs saw Elite and Star Citizen coming over the hill and realised their best hope was to cobble the pieces together and shove it out the door. It's a bit cynical to release the game on pre-order, and not let reviewers or gamers anywhere near the product prior to release.
