If you have been playing since it first started why are you not in a "superior" ship? Get out there and grind and you could be getting revenge by this time next week.

Small and cheap isn't a bad thing.
Fully agree with your point about private groups but tend to disagree with the Superior ships business. A lot of people tend to write off the cheaper smaller ships as they aren't as big, aren't as well armoured etc etc. Don't dismiss them, they can be just as viable as fighting in a large very expensive ship. The Conda can be taken down quite easily by a wing of Vultures using hit and run tactics. The courier on its own can do significant damage to a larger ship. The better weapons are not actually the more expensive ones. For example, I use gb pulse lasers and multicannons on my python rather than the "In the millions, beam lasers". Experiment with your friends so that next time a newbie in a Conda, (Paid for by the infamous Sothis run), tries to destroy you, you can leave him with a large repair cost or an even larger buyback cost.

It's not about fighting or gaining the skill, it's about being taken out before you find out what's happening in the game... persistently, by both NPC's and more often than should be, players.
We all get that it's Elite Dangerous.. If I see that as an excuse for griefing again, I'll puke
