The year is 2020 and Elite Dangerous is still P2P. Let's discuss PvE and PvP servers.

Regardless of forum noise and the like, I will look into hosting the game if it is ever made available to do so. For the time being at least, you're probably better off with P2P and Frontier hosting it anyway. :p

If it comes to that after Frontier switch off the servers, I guess hosting might become effectively like a private group is now?

I could live with that :)

I'm aware of the statements made by Frontier earlier on, but I doubt it will ever be publicly available, and even if it is, it will more than likely mean a galaxy and Commander reset. Also probably not a small undertaking to host, but I like a good challenge now and then.

Cheers.

It was Braben directly not Frontier.
Wish I had the quote to hand.

Then again, put that against the bit of a fuss about the original elite being up on the internet for all to play (though that to be fair wasn't just about it existing online at all, more about how/where/when/etc it existed)

Edit: Quotes I found:

We do plan to take regular archives of the game and the servers, to preserve the game for the future.

Also -

COULD THE SERVER CODE BE RELEASED PUBLICLY SOME DAY WHEN THE SERVERS ARE SHUT DOWN?
Yes. This is something we would do if for whatever reason we cannot keep the game going.

Also

We have no intention of taking the servers down, but I understand what you are getting at. We plan to archive the game from time to time (ie matching client and servers and game world state), and would release such an archive if the servers were to come down.

It will be interesting to see how (and if) FD have tweaked, improved or simply replaced the networking with the coming of EDO. ED and Horizons always hinted at 'combined arms' potential, and now with the 'Sphere of Combat' in EDO ED have to get the networking right.

I guess that got dropped? They favoured power creep over balance and combined arms with one branch ruling supreme isnt much of a combined arms - I can't see players go lemming with their pea shooters vs pimped meta-rides.

Well, its coming Soon™

The Sphere of Combat
Experience intense first-person combat, kit out your character with an array of weapons and gear, and coordinate with teammates to master a multi-layered, deep, tactical environment where Commanders, SRVs and Starships converge.

If this turns into a multicrew instancing quagmire again thats 1/4 of EDO toasted out of the box.

We will have to see. I seem to remember that FD were struggling to find ground based AI programmers so I do wonder if this 'mixed combat' will predominantly be player v player.
We will, as ever. I'd be surprised if NPCs on foot aren't part of it though - as that would seem to be something solved by other games long ago (before multi-player really took off even).

If they have cracked blending foot / close quarters with outdoor / vehicular / space AI then that would be very impressive. My guess is the NPCs are in contained areas, but again I look forward to seeing what they have done. I also hope they have a Deep Dive on the AI in ED if the former is the case.

Isn't ground simpler? Or is that because multiple floors?

It depends- human scale AI has to know waypoints, where to hide, what objectives it needs to do, and know how to work the surface / environment. Vehicles the same- but with ED the complication is making sure things don't get stuck because surfaces are not regular or even the same.

Space is hard de[ending on what you want: dogfighting in open space is simple, dogfighting around asteroids is harder, while having a fight in a complex environment like CQC the hardest because its not just a matter of A to B but how you do it.
