There's A War On...

Humanity's on the brink but Professor Palin still insists that I go on a 10,000 lightyear sight seeing tour before he'll engineer my thrusters?

L A M E .

ALL engineering/guardian unlocks and upgrades should be obtainable by Thargoid Combat Bonds for the duration!

There should also be the equivalent of combat bonds for folks doing support mission to get upgrades as well.

That is all.

5,000ly, you can suicide when you get there and be back in the bubble in moments and it still counts as distance traveled.

Why?
It takes less than 25 jumps using the neutron plotter and a 70ly jumpship.

25 jumps = 25 minutes
It's like the easiest freaking unlock
I hate being forced into exploits.

How can the Devs think that is okay--to have most players use exploits to avoid designed game play?

And, in a game that promises the ability to forge one's own path, I hate being forced into the generalist, grindy, engineering/material gathering grind.

I understand that the game needs pacing, but let me choose how I'm paced.

Palin must have his reasons.
A lot of things designed years ago have little sense now.
Find someone with Fleet Carrier going to Colonia f.ex. and then catch a ride back.

It must be tough having to fly a spaceship in a space based game - particularly for one whose only desire is to play at combat.

Makes me so happy that I play all of the game aspects, rather than just a tiny bit. But then, I've been playing over 5 years and has Palin unlocked in my first year of play.

Given Palin's connection to the research projects Tesreau is trying to set up, which are also linked to Vista Genomics, this is one of the requirements that fits best with the current scenario: get out on that 5kLY trip, bring back some exobiology data from further outside the bubble, make an effort to find us something that could provide a breakthrough, and then you'll have earned a bit of his time improving your ship.

(Obviously that takes longer than the min-maxed exploit of letting a carrier take you 5kLY along the highway and then using the escape pod to get back to the bubble, but it does at least fit the theme)

You can get grade 3 dirty drives without Palin.
You can get grade 5 without him, too, though it requires going a bit further than 10k LY.

But then, I've been playing over 5 years and has Palin unlocked in my first year of play.

Funny enough, my Epic account unlocked Palin like 14-16 months after start - that account was busy in the bubble and, to be honest, G3 drives were good enough, including for my combat vessel (a krait mk2)

The Palin unlock was tangential and came as a result of the trip to unlock the Colonia engineers (on-foot ones included) 😂

you aren't being 'forced' to exploit anything.

you chose not to do this unlock, and apparently the guardian unlocks as well... I'm assuming there are other areas of the game you've ignored... for 5 years.

Get a new, unengineered DBX. D-Rate everything except the FSD and you've got about 150 jumps or so. You can use those jumps to explore the galaxy you've been ignoring for 5 years... or you can just head in a straight line for about 2 hours. Then you've got a choice to make: Delete the DBX, or jump back. If you've you've unlocked the FSD engineering, it's an even shorter trip.

Entirely your choice.

You could take the opportunity to jump to Colonia and unlock the engineers over there, passing the Guardian sites on the way... completing multiple girinds in 1 shot.

You've got options. Lots and lots of options.
Okay, let's clear a few things up.

I have not ignored anything in this game. I've actually played 3 careers all the way to the end stage. So, when I say these activities are grindy and unfun I know what I'm talking about.

I have no problem spending time & effort to advance in the game, but I resent being forced into unfun, repetitive game loops for dozens of hours just to improve my ships.

This problem is compounded by the fact that MY preferred game loop involves building & engineering ships. That means gathering raw materials is a CONSTANT source of irritation.

I'm really just trying to offer suggestions for improving the game here.

Neutron hopping is a game mechanic, it's not an exploit of anything.

How is that an exploit?
The unlock requires you to travel 5000ly from start
It does not require to do anything else - does not require explore nor does not impose a certain return path. Just to get there, 5000ly from start
Okay... self-destructing might not be an exploit but only by technicality. It's really cheesy.
I've actually unlocked Palin 3 times now, and I can say with pride, that I did the entire 10kly trip.

I resented every lightyear...

Just to be clear, that's 30,000 lightyears of accumulated resentment now.
:p

Who knew.

All I see is a golden path to the horizon with the end never reached.

Steve
well, since this game is designed around the "Hedonic Treadmill" yeah, there is an end stage.

I've acquired everything I want, 3 times now.

If I had a way to acquire things via combat only, I'd reset again.
