There's A War On...

I did that 3 times as well too... but i did it the full trip. Bubble-SagA-Colonia-Bubble, that's at least 60,000 ly per account :)
Basically i turned it into a exploration/unlock/pilgrimage trip 😇
Yeah, one of my "first exploration trips" was in a DBX with only the FSD upgraded. I don't remember how many Klys it was, but I made 675 million credits when I cashed in.
Most of that was from finding Earth-likes and candidates for terraforming.

heh, I remember when you had to scan every star and use the "hab zone calculator" to find those types of planets efficiently!

Man engineering is easy peasy with the setup now. Its like super easy mode compared to when it first came out. All remember RNG Jesus and all his glory
Ahh... The slot machine era!

Just because it used to be EXPONENTIALLY worse, doesn't mean it's good now...

But, I think it's clear that someone on the dev team has a thimble full of understanding about psychology and a bucket full of ruthless for the player-base...

:p

Ok you may have legitimate 'grind' fatigue but you did it to yourself, deliberately, multiple times!

Repeadedly, voluntarily, engaging in gameplay you dont enjoy.... and some people call FDev masichists.
No, Fdev is run by sadists. ;)

Sure, I did do it to myself.

I did it because this game remains the gold standard for space combat.

The last time I rest was after the combat rebalance they did (two years? ago).

That was a fantastic improvement, because combat finally became a viable career rather than an EXPENSIVE hobby.

Now, IF ONLY I could get all my advanced engineers unlocked & and all my materials gathered via combat, the game would be perfect.

Then I could spend all my time fighting and building ships.

What I want is the spaceship equivalent of MW5.

One thing I liked about Engineering is that it requires you to do many different types of play.
Exposing you to different types of game play you may not try on your own.
I got my first planet tags unlocking Palin

One thing discussions about Engineering always come down to is that some people can tolerate it, while others hate it with all their heart.

Not sure that's a description of a game that is entirely convincing.

I know. I absolutely HATE like that.

Oh I agree entirely and I never did it, players should be required to hand in the exploration data in the bubble to prove you have traveled the required distance but that's the way it works, and as already stated no-one in forced to do anything, it's a choice, I certainly never did it, but then I enjoy exploring more than anything else and it would have bee againat all my instincts and principals to self destruct just to somewhere fast. That's why I miss most of the in game CG's, never in the area to do them.

Humanity's on the brink but Professor Palin still insists that I go on a 10,000 lightyear sight seeing tour before he'll engineer my thrusters?

L A M E .

ALL engineering/guardian unlocks and upgrades should be obtainable by Thargoid Combat Bonds for the duration!

There should also be the equivalent of combat bonds for folks doing support mission to get upgrades as well.

That is all.
You are absolutely correct of course. The simple fact is FD didn't have a lot of resources to spend on any kind of interesting or engaging unlock mechanisms, and simply entered a bunch of busywork on a rainy afternoon. Fly in a random direction for an hour and kill yourself or whatever. Completely unopposed or without any challenge. Heck, you can sit on a FC going to Colonia and kill yourself when you wake up. No problem. When you are done you get to schlep a bunch of cigars around for an hour. No particular reason, or challenge. No purpose to it at all, just do it. Then go fly to five black markets. Nothing will happen there, or on the way there. These are literally parodies of FedEx quests from the 90s. Just spend an hour doing it.

This endless list of meaningless, challengeless nonsense is driving loads of people away, and has for years. FD has acknowledged it, and many hope the 'key feature overhaul' they promised for next year is the engineering grind. Until then you'll have half a dozen people on this forum vehemently defending it as Awesome Fun. And if you disagree you're entitled, lazy, don't truly like to fly spaceships like they do and all sorts of assorted ad hominems. It is what it is.

Hey Ian, to be fair:
The engineer missions should introduce you to various content of the game in theory.
It's just implemented in a hilariously bad low effort way.

Those "missions" have the same vibe as Steam achievements.

People claim this, but I don't buy it. This is a game. Why is it important to "expose" people to certain game loops?

I appreciate that this is a big, versatile sandbox, but what's wrong with letting me spend my playtime in one little corner?

And, for those of you who like this approach, how would you feel about it if you had to kill 500 pirates in open play before gaining access to Felicity Farseer?

I've done that.

I think everyone should be exposed to my style of play as well.

It is important
When i started at the end of 2018, it was the engineers unlocks that got me through most of the game mechanics

I actually hated mining.
But then 6 months later that flipped 180 and i started to really enjoy it. Sure the big payouts helped a lot too...

I think sandbox games should have options to guide players. Kerbal Space Program for example has prebuild missions which slowly introduce you to mechanics (first orbit, first mun/moonshot, first munlanding, first Duna/Mars landing etc.).
In KSP it guides you through natural progression. In Elite it should be the same, but most players see it as needless grind.
