They actually did it. (Huge if true)

Grom is unique because he was created by a specific group of players who won a competition. He's effectively a player faction. So if they've abandoned their own patron/creation, that would be big.

Last I heard, they'd abandoned defending their systems in order to launch an all-out war on Hudson, their PP rank has been in free-fall since. But that was a couple of weeks ago, has there been a new development?

Ironically this has happened while I'm pledged to Grom for grom-bombs, with about 3 weeks to go. I was going to wait and then do the customary 750t delivery, but if the people responsible for Grom's existence in the game have announced that they're quitting, FDev might finally allow "collapse" or post a retirement message on Galnet.

Looks like I might have to get busy fortifying Grom systems. Operation "Lenin's Tomb", the preservation of Yuri Grom...

Not that I have a bone in this fight, but if it takes months to notice anything might have happened using third party tools I am skeptical of the hugeness of what might have happened. :p

Powerplay - like so many other bolted on 'features' - in a nutshell.

It's ok, though. The GalNet team is being scrapped to where it only covers actual in-game news...which, interestingly enough, never involves powerplay as an in-game system. We get stories about powerplay characters all the time, but not actual in-game changes. Grom's collapse would have been excellent fare.

Oh well. Even at only three articles a week, GalNet still makes more news in-game than Elite does in the real world.

From what I can gather (as a layman):

Earlier this season a group of diehard players that back Yuri Grom in PowerPlay supposedly announced that they were abandoning the effort. Maybe leaving the game altogether. You could call these players Grom’s “leadership” for lack of a better term, because PowerPlay is largely driven by a very small collection of organized player groups.

The OP says that according to Inara, rumor about the Grom players leaving appears to be true. Grom has suffered miserably and lost a ton of systems recently. It could imply there is no organized effort to protect him.

If Grom is truly abandoned by his chief backers then that leaves the rival PowerPlay groups free to carve up the carcass amongst themselves.

Is this “huge?”

To the average player (like me)... no. Not at all.

To people who take PP seriously (like the OP I guess?)... probably. It means a gold rush to conquer Grom systems.

The memes though... I have no idea what any of that is about. I like the “fat sexy Grom” one though. Credit where credit is due. ;)

I look at this not as big news, but as a big highlight with flashing neon arrows and one of those air-powered wavy arm sock guys pointing out what a failure the Power Play system is, on the whole.

Being that it has no meaningful impact on game play, the loss of a player base for one or even all powers, will go largely unnoticed by non-power players, which I suspect constitutes the larger percentage of the player base.

Power Play has needed an overhaul since its inception, and this simply goes to illustrate how badly that overhaul is needed.

I hope they seriously overhaul powerplay. I had considered setting up a remote desktop system so I could ping to load my hold while I was away from my rig... but I just decided to not do powerplay at all. I do not regret my decision.... I hope New Era is a serious overhaul of a lot of those things as well as a few new features.

Close but not exactly.

EGP, which is... was Groms leadership decided to quit powerplay. Yes for real. 100% official. That, of course, caused the collapse of the Yuri Grom powerplay faction, which can be seen on the screenshot from inara.

Grom was in that way special that they got their own PP faction, unlike all other power comunities who just addopted the power they liked best. EGP was never really trilled of powerplay, it wasn't what they expected.

They guys announcing the assault on Hudson are other people. Since there is no official PP leadership, anyone is now free to claim Grom for himself. We'll see what comes out of this.

In fairness this one is pretty obvious from the in-game summaries, too - Grom has dropped from (briefly) 1st in the rankings to 11th, and lost about a third of their systems, in the space of four weeks.

The third party tools are better for getting a retrospective of events, though.

This has happened more than once. Several Powers have had top to toe undermining and devastating attacks inflicted- its just they went unreported and ignored.

If powerplay had tangible effects on the galaxy beyond single-digit percentages the average player won't notice...maybe it wouldn't be so ignored.

Why there aren't USSs specific to powerplay factions, more unique modules and commodities, variations in interdicting NPCs, variations in station communications, unique mega-ships and interactive stations...so much potential that was never realized.

Welcome to my world!
