They said the Thargoid plot would be dynamic based on player reaction.

so there was a cinematic trailer in a stream today? don't tell ...
i've lots of inane newsletters in my inbox, and the 'news and updates' section in this forum shows no new messages.

Here's why... I'm going to tell you why, OP.

Because a game wherein we and the thargoids run off into the sunset together would be exceptionally boring and anti-climactic.

The other criticism, that when you're given nothing but hammers, everything looks like a nail... if the intent of the Thargoids content wasn't all-out war, then we wouldn't have been given hammers in the first place.

Young Greek boys didn't fawn over stories of Naxos, the happy pita baker that was good to his wife and invented the dolmathakia. No, they reveled in tales of Odysseus, Perseus, and Achilles.

Engaging games need conflict. That's what keeps them fun.

So those gun happy researchers better not be what AEGIS turns out to be, I will regret helping them in any way

I do understand your concerns. (BTW, prepare yourself for being called a coward. :()

However, I like to look at things more closely.

That encounter. The Thargoid only turned around after being damaged.

Now, does this possibly hint at what precautions players can take?

I think so. Let me explain.

What if a Thargoid interdicts us, and we just float there?

Don't even deploy weapons. Just float. Get shut down. Here's another point. I don't see the Thargoids destroying a disabled ship. (By their own disabling.) Why? Simple. Gameplay. At the end of the day, if the Thargoids destroy you whilst EMP'd, that's... Not going to go down well. I'm fine with being destroyed, as long as I can attempt to avoid it. I suspect a great many players share my opinion.

So I'm not too worried now. Reality is, this game still has to entertain. If people start getting auto-deleted, I strongly suspect... Players will leave the game, for lack of perceived entertainment. For good. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth see.

I could be wrong, but I suspect this is how Frontier will handle the Thargoid question.

And OP, I'm going to get called a coward as well now. You're not alone. :(

Should we approach with gun ports open but no lock to show our strength and how we aren't using it on them?

Meh, I'm 22kly away. I expect I'll see nothing unless I trek back but I have no reason to do so (so far as I know). I'd like to be made to be wrong, though.

Meh is about not getting the reference, not the coming update.

Thargoid War doesn't mean a war between humans and Thargoids. Like us, they are not a unified species. We are merely a pawn in their internal struggles.

So what choices does that leave us? Several:

  • Do we pick a side? (Oresians/Klaxians)
  • If so, how do we choose?
  • How close do we want to get? Non-aggression? Trade? Mutual defense?
  • Human factions will have diverse responses, which side do we join?
  • What happens if different human factions side with different Thargoid factions?
  • Do some of us choose to flee?
  • Where would be safe?
  • If we are forced to defend ourselves, do we attempt to kill them all again through disease, or just use conventional weapons?

Let's face it ... the military loves the fruits of science' naivety.

From the wheel to the splitting of the atom, comes war machines.

Well said. I can't wait to collect data on how the Thargoids live by shooting them with something meant to kill them.

No they don't, not for everyone, there are plenty of stories that lack direct conflict in that way. Subterfuge, politics, love, travel, mystery and discovery are all great story tropes.

SOME people need combat based conflict, but you don't speak for everyone when you say games need conflict to be fun especially this game, it is full of explorers and traders who don't NEED combat to have fun

No, I don't speak for everyone. Just most males aged 12-50

(I wonder what the ratio of violent to non-violent games on the market is? Or how much market share violent games enjoy over non-violent. I'm sure the numbers are as to be expected.)

Well, Canonn woke the Thargoids up .. maybe now's the time for it to start looking for ways to pacify them again. When the barnacles first appeared, a few people tried to blockade to protect them, granted .. but most peope just shot first I'm afraid.

They also said this game would be some variant of "sandbox" where players' actions matter in some way or another. They say a lot of things - most of them untrue.

I don't think you can say that .. would Colonia really be developing as it is, if nobody went there?

There has been LOTS of engagement with Canonn Research.
