I used to do that too, but the truth is you can land in a lot of place you might not think you can. You have to orient your ship properly sometimes for it to even realize it can land there. I've landed in some strange places.

Also, it's not just about landing, you have to be able to get your SRV out and back in (sometimes the "back in" part is difficult to impossible from certain angles).
