This game is not friendly to newcomers?

The original also had difficulty variation. You could choose to go to dangerous places. ED just spawns engineered AI indiscriminately.
I think we are talking slighty at cross purposes, however as I recall if you took cargo even to a "safe" system right at the start it would do a pretty good job of spawning in pirates to kill you as you tried to make it into the station - Elite has "never" been particularly "forgiving" to new players. Which kind of takes me back to my original point - it's somewhat in the DNA of the game.

The game is plenty friendly enough for those who make an effort. It's also easy enough for those prepared to think a bit.

For example, the OP mentioned overshooting their destination and flying 5000km(!) in normal flight. Totally unnecessary and self-inflicted. The tutorials definitely cover that these days, but even in the early days it took me just a few overshoots to think "maybe I'm flying too fast, maybe I should slow down". Then in about 15mins I figured out the "7 second rule", "75% throttle rule", and throttle "blue zone", all without needing to resort to embarrassing myself on a public forum.

Sorry OP, your post says more about you than it does about the game. There's plenty of good advice given above. Do the tutorial and pay attention. Read the manual (one click from the launcher). Ask questions here, we will help, but it really is a case of getting out of the community what you're prepared to put in.
I use the 6 second rule...

The game was designed to be a modern version of the original - to appeal to the original designer and to old players like myself. Therefore it pretty much has to be "unfriendly" to newcomers. It's a niche game for a niche audience, and if you change that too much you get something no one likes.
Sorry if that sounds like "are you local ?" etc - but, it underpins why this game even exists.
I played the original and got this when the ps4 version was released. For me the easiest part of the game is flying once I adjusted controls. I already knew how to fly from the original. Everything else is new. This game is exponentially deeper and better than the original although the original was ahead of it's time in the 80's.

This helped me, a lot. Now, 3 years later, I have several billions in the bank, a fleet of fully engineered ships, etc. I owe a lot to this video and without it would have felt like quitting.

And by the way, don't be disheartened by those forum members who seem disinterested in your difficulty. ED is an unforgiving game but persevere and you'll get there.

Good luck CMDR.

I don't know why you guys bother trying to explain something to this guy. Did he ask for help?
He didn't even bothered to play through game tutorials and you expect him to watch some YT videos and try to learn something? He wanted to refund the game, because it didn't tell him what to do at every step. Instead of trying to understand the game, reading the CODEX at least, or actually going through basics with tutorial missions, he decided to create a thread complaining that things were confusing for him. Not seeking help with particular problem, although that would have been done better by just googling, but complaining that the game was too complicated.

I understand that Elite might be little bit overwhelming at first, but I suspect that MS Flight Simulator is confusing and difficult to understand when you jump straight into the cockpit and try to take off without learning anything. But I wouldn't go to the game forums and complain that I don't know why the plane stalled and game didn't tell me why I crashed at the end of the runaway, so it must be "poorly made". Because everything should be easy ,effortless and dumbed down, right?

Sorry, but people who complain like that irritate me greatly.

I did tutorials. They do not answer my questions, so dont be rude to me. Trust me I know how to fly. I could land perfectly in this game if it would allow me to. Flying in this game is not very hard. Clearly you implied that Im too incompetent to play this, judging by your condescending reply, but that is not the case, thank you very much.
turn all that fancy dancy assistance Mr. Pilot

Yeah tell me about it!

Tutorials are a total waste of energy & resources; I haven't even peaked at one of them & I've picked this game up just fine with T&E plus the help of the forums & YT.

OP - Welcome to the world of Elite ... This is a game written today for a world from yesterday, or more specifically 1984. A world when gaming was evolving, where the original Elite opened a new era of open world games. The game contained a keyboard overlay which told you the keys to press, but not how. It's opening sequence required you to dock at a revolving space station to the tune of the Blue Danube. Many failed, but for those that succeeded and persevered the coveted Elite Ranking and badge awaited and a seminal gaming memory of a lifetime was forged. Now 35 years years on that learning curve is repeated, although I have to say this time I found docking infinitely easier. Sadly, this time I don't have the time available to do it justice, but I am grateful for the rekindling of memories and the forging of new ones. Eg Landing in a station four years ago with life support ticked down to zero, the screen almost popped, so limited instrumentation and visibility, heart pumping from 4 minutes 59 seconds of real life where one false move meant good night Vienna.

Have fun and I hope you reach a day where you look back and think - wow that was a memory for life and it came from Elite

Might just be a kid. Sometimes you have to be patient.

I bought it on steam today, and so far - I have 0 clues of what I can do. I get 0 information on where I can go to do stuff. I see something called Mawson dock, which description says it's for new pilots, so I figure maybe that's where I start. I die once on my way there due to overheated ship and it exploded with no information why or how to prevent it. At least nothing a new player can understand. I respawn like millions of kilometres away again at something called the detention centre or something. Now I got to Mawson dock, but when I try to enter it I get warnings for trespassing, even though it says I have access. I read somewhere that you have to go fast and not too slow, and I was pretty slow so that would make sense. It also said you can't get fined for trespassing... But nooo.
I got fined like 20 times, 200C each, and I still couldn't dock. It's too late for me to refund, but this game is so weird. How am I supposed to do ANYTHING in this game if it tells me nothing and throws me in with 100 different mechanics and problems that I have 0 knowledge of preventing? A very poorly made game, or so it seems.

Sounds like you got shot by the police ("authority") for doing something illegal, hence the respawn at a detention centre. The rules for incurring bounties are nebulous in this game, and it's not always clear that you committed a crime. For example, shooting a pirate who was about to complete their scan of your cargo hold (and then attack you) incurs a bounty...

To land, you need to request permission to dock, use the left HUD for that.

I recommend doing the tutorials, they cover a lot of the basics.

Thank you for the reply but I dont think its worth my time lol. I might know how to dock now but I still will never learn anything to progress in this game, or how to travel around smoothly. It took me 3 hours to get to a destination because I flew past it every time I jumped and eventually just flew ordinarily for like 5000 km which took FOREVER! lol. but thanks still

Your ship comes with an autopilot that automated landing, take off and supercruise.

I'm a somewhat over-trained pilot the USAF wasted money on, and certain parts of this game are deadlier than Real Life. This is a tough game to learn to play well.

Additionally, it's British. :)

OP, I get it. It's also not a crime to get wound up and write in a tone that reflects your annoyance. It's interesting reading some of the comments on this thread that seem to suggest that wanting clearer instructions in the game is somehow intellectually lazy. 'Back at launch I had to spend hours navigating the forums to realise I had to raise the landing gear before I could make a jump. Although it was effortless mouse clicking, I feel the time was well spent because for that to be explained in the game would insult my intelligence and thus I have earned my colours'. It's as if they think that trawling the forums or watching youtube videos rather than playing the game is some kind of time served right of passage.

Imagine a school child asking their teacher about something they struggled to understand, and the teacher saying 'google it' whilst the kids in the upper year point and jeer saying, 'We had to do it, so why shouldn't you' whilst the teacher nips outside for a cigarette.

I went through the combat tutorial just now and tried to do it as if I were a newcomer. On the second attack, the voice instructor recommends shifting all power to weapons. There's no graphic, such as an arrow, to illustrate where to look on the HUD. If I was a new player, I think a small detail like an arrow would be useful, and get me into the game quicker. Whereas some people might describe that as 'hand holding', I fail to see how it is more skillful to log out, go on the forums spending ages to find an answer, then log back into the game until something else crops up, then back to the forums again.

Is Elite Dangerous .exe an extension to the forums?

When people talk about the satisfaction of finding out about a certain mechanic on their own without external assistance, as if it were an amazing achievement, it makes me think that there are varying degrees of satisfaction from person to person. Personally, I think the sooner you get out in your space ship knowing how all the controls work and where to locate them, the better. That's when you can get on with it. I was taught how to use the clutch and gears on a Lambretta (GP 200 (225 rebore), orange to those in the know; 'Loads Of Chrome Won't Get You Home, But At Least You Look Good When You Break Down'). I would have probably sussed the gears out (or maybe not) eventually after flooding the engine numerous times, turning the headlights on and off, attempting to use the back brake as a clutch and stinking the street out with two stroke. I'm glad I was shown, as it got me on the road straight away, which was the purpose of the scooter. The latter would have got me on the road too, but a lot later. I can't imagine being smug that, although I was a day late to the job interview, at least no one held my hand and I worked out the gears all by myself (what a clever boy), unlike those 'show me how to ride it and I'll get riding' lazy types.

I think it likely that I got more out of typing this, than anyone would reading it.

I did not do anything illegal. I accidentally pressed Y on Xbox controller and it overheated and I exploded and respawned in the detention centre (for whatever reason). I did not ask for docking permission, I didnt know I had to, how would I know that? Not like the game tells me I have to do it or how to do it lol. It said something with docking permission restored once I had backed out after receiving the warning. Someone had this problem too and all the replies said to just drive faster when entering, and that should prevent from getting a warning. They said nothing about docking permission either. They also said I couldn't get fined for trespassing. Since the game says nothing about it, and this community told me you can do all these things to help my problem then I have no reason not to trust them.
It tells you how to dock in the tutorials. So how have you done the tutorials but don't know how to dock?

Not sure what OP's issue is. I bought Elite about a month ago and was up and flying around without issue in the first couple of hours. The current tutorials certainly cover the basics - if you run them in order.. Clearly the OP is a liar as the current intro tutorials all cover Docking Assist, Supercruise Assist and all the other modern conveniences. Although, oddly, my first time out had no auto launch/dock happening and I had to work it out - didn't explode or get locked up though.

It would be something of misnomer to call a advance space flight sim friendly to newcomers, but how could it be any other way? Back in the 80's the game included a keyboard overlay of about 30 key commands and it had gotten much more detailed since then. Elite has never been plug and play in that regard.
The initial tutorials, user forum and patience should be enough to ease someone into the game. if you are expecting full familiarity within a short space of time then this is not really practical. In truth it is often a matter of trial and error and putting in the time. I know that sounds counter intuitive in regards to fun, but to arrive at a level of ease and enjoyability, then the only way forward is through.

Not being rude, but if you did them you'd know how to land. Every ship comes with an auto-landing module that prompts you how to engage it as soon as you have docking permission. Run through the tutorials again and get familiar with how to look at the UI panels. Blowing up from heat damage suggests you had Silent Running on, possibly by accident. The ship information panel on the right hand side lets you shut that on/off even if you don't know the binding or controller combo for it.

Go slow and make certain you understand the controls AND that they are bound in a way that makes sense to you. That's not a great deal of fun early-on but it's crucial for later. Do the flying docking SC and fighting tutorials till they are easy. It helps to get the 'feel' of what to do paved into your brain.

On day 2 I got rid of all my 'assist' modules and was landing, using super cruise no problem. I prefer to hit YouTube for videos once I have the basics down which I did for learning how to mine, fight better, and do exploration.

Yes, it's missing that common introductory scripted sequence that many people tend to expect but there are a good set of tutorials available and they absolutely do give you enough to get off the dock, to a destination and back down again, because I used them to do just that.
