This is fine.

That looks less good
Detail disappears not far from your Frieghter, then 'pops-in' over a fairly short distance. This happened when the Beyond update was released (with VR) as prior to then detail was excellent over distance. Oddly, NPC assets were less affected. Further 'nerfs' to PC detail followed which apparently gives even very high-spec PC's the same level of detail as PS4 / Xbox...
Otherwise, there is plenty to do in NMS and as a 'proper' sandbox it is fine. Not knocking the game itself, just how many changes were made that were reduction in quality, since the massive update.

Looks like someone didn't have the latest drivers, lol. I've never seen the models do that in a hundred hours of play.

I seriously doubt that :) (with a 2080 Super and automatic install of updated drivers that scenario is highly unlikely!)
So how does your fleet look from a planetary base?

From, pre-beyond update, again from the surface base...

Minor difference?
(Post beyond I bought a bigger Freighter)

ETA: I'll fire NMS up again and take a peek, if it has changed I'll retract the criticism :)

NMS is awesome. But only for planetary exploration. The flying ships part is tedious at best. I've sunk hours into NMS, though, and built lots of bases. :) I highly recommend it.

I suspect that players that have flown in E: D will get the urge, like I do, to get into a real spaceship again - at which point you'll fire up E: D.
Didn't find it too tedious at all. I quite enjoyed flying them. Not sure if this will work. Just some asteroid acrobatics in a stock fighter.

Same as it always has. (As in the normal detail from the previous pics I posted.) I've never seen any super low poly models before. Lemme boot up the game here and take a pic. I have a GTX 1060.

...well once the mech update is finished.

I should have added, the major ship issue is in VR. They are unflyable, and after several annoying hours I've given up trying.

Never had a problem with it using a controller on the big screen. But in VR, Hello games haven't allowed players to use a controller at all - you can only use the virtual HOTAS, which is a pile of crap.

Oooooh, yeah that makes sense. You gotta actually control the ship virtually with the in-ship controls, right? Yeah I can't imagine that's too easy when the flight stick you're holding isn't actually real.

Two YT links - just played.
first is settings, second (skip the loading screen, check out leaving the Frieghter, then skip to the end, as I don't have an editor) is a trip out from the Freighter back to the surface... Lemme see... Yep, blocky. Mech update already installed.

(this is still processing on YT as it is downscaling from 4k to SD - it may take a few minutes yet!)

Nvidia driver version: (pretty up-to-date :) )

I was playing No Man's Sky the other day. A massive carrier and fleet of frigates and my own personal starships....

And don't forget that sending fleets of frigates off on autonomous missions earns you money and resources. Win-win!

I'm building, as Commodore, a cocktail lounge on my freighter. Afterwards I may pop down to the flight deck and select one of my ships to fly, or perhaps I'll just direct the Freighter to the next system and use my organic ship for planetary exploration, flora and fauna cataloguing, base building, set up a farm and a resource factory.... etc etc etc... ...and if I don't play the game for a year, it will all still be there waiting for me.....

...An amazing amount of salt over a beta (where changes based on feedback are likely to be incorporated in beta 2)...

I admire your optimism. I'm not sure I've ever seen much change from beta to live, but maybe this one will break the mouldy mold.

And now, a similar scene not much further away... Oops... where did the detail go? Yep, ED would look amazing copying NMS !

Wow, I've never seen anything like that. But then I guess that there are some horrible images of ED when it glitches. So let's accept that a screen grab doesn't define any game, nor necessarily (ymmv) the choice of art style.

The broader issue as I see it is that NMS is fun to play and doesn't punish you for not playing (does any other game!?). As things stand, even if the maintenance costs are reduced, I just don't see Fleet Carriers being a big draw, least not in the medium to long term - and I may be wrong. I still however think they should include personal carriers, smaller with limited pads, with the same maintenance mechanic as for other ships. The next (achievable) step up from the big-three.

Maybe FDev could link them to your Thargoid rank - you know, to 'balance the gameplay'... into oblivion....

I'm a real optimist :) Hoping that in the 2nd beta we will all be able to buy and play - I can't see the current 'requirements' making it into the live game! (Or, at least, I hope not!)

But this has been consistent since the Beyond update, previously, even with the experimental Vulkan release the orbiting assets were very well detailed. Had the situation occured prior to the update I'd be concerned that something was amiss with the install...

The 2 shots below are approaching the Freighter, blocky - then resolving... Had I the patience, and video editing software loaded, I would have made a video of that happening, it is a real pop-in.

Here you can see one of the support ships resolving into a detailed unit.

The game is fine, is being given 'lots of love' by Hello Games and certainly some innovation in content. But they did 'nerf' distance detail radically in incorporating VR! (which I really must check out again as it has allegedly improved)

Not by me. I wonder how many other people expected them? Or what they might be?
Fleet Carriers release was held back so they could release a series of QoL/bug fixes updates, the last of which was held back to combine the two.
Fleet Carriers was ready to go at Christmas remember, everyone started cussing down the ‘influencers’ because it was their fault FDev held it back remember.

For all the graphic issues NMS has, like SC, filled in the background. NMS you get planets with stuff on them, good or bad at least there is something. SC... i saw a youtube of SC, the player starts in a city and they dont even get a map just have to learn the way round. And i look at the "city" and realise they have done what should have been done to the inside of coriolis stations. ED now... it doesnt even look like it came out of beta really. Sure "the bubble" but the rest of it is clearly not finished. Thats why stuff like NMS gets praised over ED imo.

NMS has a lot to do, and a massive amount of content to play with. sadly when Beyond and VR launched the VR implementation was incredibly poorly performing (and for a few weeks even pancake couldn't be controlled with anything but default key layout) but I gather much has improved since then.
I haven't played for a while, not that I dislike it, just ED got 'interesting' when I started this CMDR, then HL:Alyx, now ED again and trying to get another 48 combat bonds in a wussy Krait II (very lightly engineered as I need bonds to unlock an engineer - you get the picture :) )

Can't say anything good or bad about SC as I've never tried it so have no valid opinion.

But this beta in ED
