This is what Maintenance Mode must be like :(

A much better solution imo..... and then after each paid DLC the previous DLC gets rolled into the new "base game".

imo having - even a small - fee to get the game is important as it will help to dissuade people from setting up sock puppet accounts just to grief or cheat. I think there is a mental barrier for some people even if it is only a small fee of say £10 to not want to get an account banned for cheating.

I think if a player not prepared to pay even £10 for horizons as a base game (basically all the content we have today) with then an optional extra DLC fee of maybe £30 then I do not think FD really need to worry too much above wanting that player to get on board... going F2P for base game may do more harm than good for the rest of the player base..
Ye, F2P would invite even more salt farming.

I guess it depends on what your definition of Maintenance mode is. Back in the days of SOE, when a game went to Maintenance Mode, that ment no more bug fixes, no new content; just keep the servers up to keep the game available. Once a MMO got to this stage being 'sunset' was not too far away. This is also my definition of Maintenance Mode.

Elite is not at that stage. We're still getting content (albeit Interstellar Initiatives and bug fixes) and although Fleet Carriers have been put back, the real confidence breaker will be with whatever comes in the December Beta. It would be nice to have some small new thing for Christmas (cough cough cut and Pasted Race tracks) but not holding out much hope.
Not sure about a definition, but Old Duck can be blamed as for this previous post.

Not sure where to put this, but I'll put it here, as I haven't noticed it before.

FD are putting their money where their mouth is, advertising for a Build Engineer

Build Engineer

We have an opportunity for a Build Engineer ..... successful candidate will innovate and improve our existing automated testing and build procedures to support these projects, and will manage the various builds both internally during development and for external releases.

Key Responsibilities
  • Working with our existing continuous integration build setup to ensure that functioning, recent builds of our games and various tools are available to those who require them, and that development progress isn’t blocked by broken builds
  • Creating new automated tests as part of our continuous integration system, and managing existing tests to ensure they remain relevant for the projects in question
  • Ensuring that the build process is as fast and hassle-free as possible for all 100+ members of our teams
  • Improving all aspects of the build process and systems for our various projects. This will include both the process of creating and packaging a build as well as project-specific paths such as data export and validation.

I'm sure there are plenty in these forums who can do this job, most seem to be experts in the field.

Whilst more often than not I agree with you i am not sure I do here.

Whilst I am NOT an expert in any field to do with code, I know when software has problems.
I also know when something is not working as well as advertised.

You dont have to be a top chef to know when your meat is rotten. **

**I am not saying ED is rotten, far from it, just that it should not be that the only people who should be allowed to complain are people that can do the job better themselves imo.

That I agree with though. But some seem to think it's so easy. I'd love to see them try to do the job.

We can blame Old Duck for a lot of things. :p But it does annoy me when people are shouting about Maintenance Mode when the game is still getting bug fixes and will still get new content further down the line. The time to shout DOOOMMM is when fdev announce that there's nothing new in the pipeline, no new bug fixes or the real big one of nothing new in the Store.

The frustrating part is that Frontier have managed to accomplish some exceptional feats, but seem to struggle with the more "mundane" tasks like version control and QA.

True. Hibernation Mode would be more accurate I think.

I suppose it is feasible that the base game could go F2P to encourage new players, then make the DLC pay to play... (basically like destiny 2)

Before going F2P, which would attract a lot of new players to the game, FD would need to improve the new player experience in order to increase retention of those new players. Implement things like better tutorials, a cleaner UI, and such. They would also be wise to streamline the in game store and add a lot of new DLC to it too.

Oh, wait, what has FD made time to develop this year while they focus everything else on the New Era? ;)

And I remember a part of the community letter talking about communication... so we got half of it.

Half of it is twice what we have gotten in the past. I'd call that a significant improvement.

Ultimately we know bugs are code-base related issues, so there really isn't much to tell. Going back to my example - it could really depend on what the actual problem is, or where it is. If was a material defect, sure, I'd have no problem saying "Due to a materials defect...". If it were an actual design flaw ("Ok, so, rather than wiring the ground wires to an actual ground, I wired it wrong...") I might not say anything specific, other than calling it "an issue", to maintain confidence not only in this product, but future products as well.

DOOM:
We have no beginning. We have no end. We are infinite. Millions of years after your playerbase has been eradicated and forgotten, we will endure.

CMDR Shepard:
Where are the rest of the Doommongers? Are you the last of your kind?

DOOM:
We are legion. The time of our return is coming. Our numbers will darken the sky of every world. You cannot escape your DOOM.

Hey look, another job that should help empty out the forums of armchair geniuses.

sorry, but that's actually a good definition of maintenance mode. a mode that isn't necessarily terminal, and the game has been in several times, sometimes officially, sometimes not.

The time to shout DOOOMMM is when fdev announce that there's nothing new in the pipeline, no new bug fixes or the real big one of nothing new in the Store.

it's actually you guys (posts like this) who play the doom card when confronted with criticism or description that seems too much for you to process or tolerate.

Its not a matter of Doom with ED. Its a slow, lingering deflation where piece by piece the game just rots and falls apart, or that each feature fails to bring the whole together.

If anything, its like this:

2020 will be the defib paddles for ED. Lets hope said paddles are placed on the chest where its needed, and not another jolt to the testicles.

But what if that's where they've been this whole time - on the chest, and it's the nether region that actually needs the jolt?

We will only find out in 2020. Either FD round out ED and make it coherent, or they go back to old habits and glue on more dodgy features.
