SAR ships arriving to help ships in distress has been in-game for years but you rarely get to see it.

Dunno if things have changed to make it more common or whether the OP just got lucky.

Be nice if FDev changed the way these encounters work so that you can either help the ship yourself (if it needs fuel/repairs) or you need to keep on defending it until an SAR ship arrives and renders assistance.

Yeah, this would be nice. Or at least you get to accept a mission to go to a nearest port to call for S&R help.
