Thoughts on C-Class Carbon stars

Greetings commanders!

I’m relatively new to posting here but have been playing Elite for quite some time. Over the past 6 months I have really dived head first into exploration and become a hunter of stars....essentially all types, looking to add each star class, as well as sub types, to my ever growing database of first discoveries. About three months ago I began reading about the elusive C-Class Carbon stars; those stars reportedly in systems which were “authored” and placed in a finite capacity around the bubble. These being in contrast to the variant carbon stars which were seen scattered throughout the galaxy; mainly CJ, CN, MS and S Class Carbon stars. I am aware of a list of about 160 of C-Class Carbon stars that are known and have been listed. From reading in this forum I also learned that there were likely very few, if any, of these stars left for discovery.

As I wanted to be a completionist I set off to attempt to discover my own C-Class Carbon star as to me they look to be some of the most fascinated celestial bodies in the Galaxy. After about 3 months of searching around the bubble in various HD and HIP systems (where most of these stars have been found) I finally happened upon one I could not find in any database or list of known stars. This was HD 60826 in the Sanguineous Rim. Assuming it would be tagged but ever hopeful I flew my Anaconda out there and finally reached it via jumponium, albeit only basic charge. I was quite pleased to find it was yet to be tagged and was able to add it to my collection!

This was just a few days ago on 1/12/19.

My questions and thoughts are as follows:

1. I am looking to visit all the known C-Class Carbon stars, if anyone has tagged one which is not in a known data base would they be willing to share the system so I can add it to places to visit?

2. Has anyone else tagged a C-Class Carbon star this year yet?

3. Is there any idea how many, if any, are left to tag? I am aware that there are several in locked systems as well as several which are currently unable to be reached with our current technology.

4. Does any one have any thoughts or ideas if these types of stars will eventually be scattered around other parts of the galaxy for discovery as they represent amazing discoveries and sights to behold.

5. Any other thoughts and/or observations on these amazing stars are welcome.

6. There are only three systems to this point that I myself have found with C-Class Carbon stars that are tagged but not found in any database I saw. These being HD 128033, HD 56167 and 166097.

Sorry for the lengthy post, or if some of this is repeated or redundant. I am new to post here and don’t even know if my picture will be available to be seen or if I can even respond yet to any replies.

Thanks to all in advance.

Addendum: of note also included are HR systems, while there are only two C-Class Carbon stars listed from this group I’m curious if others are know?

Three months to find one? That's an impressive amount of dedication. Congrats on getting it!

I only have an answer to question four: probably not anytime soon. Galaxy generation is unlikely to be changed to add new systems, so the only likely feature would be if Frontier added more catalogue stars. Mind you, they have done this in the past, but it has been a long while since they last did.

Also, how is the lighting on these in the new system? I recall that in the old one, it gave a nice green tint to Earth-like worlds, so I'm curious in what way it might have changed.

Thanks so much! Yes it was a rather tedious project and there were a few let downs but in the end very rewarding. The system actually had a landable planet within about 30 ls of the Star so I was able to land fairly close. This particular star seemed to give off almost a pinkish hue, which may or may not be appreciated in the photos. All in all it was quite an amazing find and well worth the time of looking through thousands of HIP/HD and HR systems! I would hope they would add some systems with a few more of these stars, they are absolutely amazing and a great feeling to have been the first one to find it and would hope other explorers could have the experience. I will try to submit a few more photos albeit I am new at this!

Most procedural C stars have an orange-redish light tint.

Then there are some catalog ones that have beautifull red-pinkish light color, like Y Canum Venaticorum (very nice place).

Anyway, kudos for the dedication :)

I tried to find a C-Class carbon star by myself for some time. After more than 4500 visited carbon stars I concluded that there are no procedurally generated class C stars and ended my search.
I'm very surprised that there are still 'hand-made' class C stars that are undiscovered.

Untagged hand crafted catalog stars are definitely few and far between, but they are out there, including C class ones. Patience and determination.

To my knowledge the rarest procedurally generated Carbon Star which has been found, which is actually a variant, is a class CJ Star. I have scanned the in various regions (usually around +1000 and -1200 above and below the galactic plane) and have found a few, although most are CN and S stars. I too have never encountered a C Class Carbon Star outside the authored systems. I was quite surprised and pleased to come across and discover the C Star I did and I do believe there are likely a few more out there.

Thanks I appreciate that! Yes it took quite some time but I do think there are others out there. I would best describe the color of what I’ve found to be a pinkish orange color, I nicknamed it the grapefruit!

Here are a few shots I was able to get of it the other night:

This was immediately upon my arrival and noting it was an undiscovered C-Star!

This was landing on the closest planet, which I believe was within 100 ls or less of the star, however I cannot check right now as I’m out of town!

This was the an attempt to watch the sunset which to me made it worth it all!

Again the pictures may not show, but when viewing in the game the best way I could describe it was a orangish with a pinkish hue!

This is quite the view TBH. The light tint is really sweet.

Here is a view from the closest planet to la Superba for your enjoyement :)

Good job and good luck with your quest, Flagg1900. I stumbled upon a C-star on my way back after a december-tour. I wasn't the first there but it did nevertheless give a mention in the codex as the first of that kind in that region. Silly imho. Sadly old exploration didn't count towards the codex-thing.

Anyway: https://www.edsm.net/en/system/bodies/id/25912216/name/HIP+42227/details/idB/19483162/nameB/HIP+42227+A If you'd need it.

IIRC, I do have a few from way back, pre-EDSM and all that. I shall dig and see if they're not included somewhere.

Thanks so much! Yes this is an amazing shot, I absolutely love the ashen deep ruby red color of the star! Do you recollect or have on file what the system was here?

Thanks rollo! And thanks for the system addition, I will cross reference it to the data I have but believe it to already be included. If you are able to find the older data that would be amazing! Thanks again so much!

Yes, it's Y canum venaticorum also known as "la Superba". about 1Klry above the galactic plane, not far from Sol. IIRC it's one of the coolest and reddest star known.

Just arriving back from a business trip I had my final system with an unlisted C-Star to fly out to and check. This one was HD 31798, also in the Sanguineous Rim. This was the last one I had found during my three month search of the HIP/HD systems. To my surprise, upon arrival it was undiscovered and quite large!

Not only was it not tagged it had both a neutron star and a white dwarf within 3000 ls of it. It has a radius of 147 and a solar mass of 1.9. Its deep ruby red was absolutely chilling.

It also had a Class IV Gas giant and a metal rich body (landable) within 500 ls.

The images on the planet itself were what this game is all about to me.

Finally went out to the neutron and dwarf and was able to get a few images as well!

Just wanted to share! I have exhausted the systems I have found via my search and have essentially come to the end of my quest. While I know there are others out there that are unreachable currently or locked behind the curtains I will continue to search as I travel.

I have now scanned the entire system and turned in my data!

Thanks! And sorry if I posted too many shots!

For some strange reason, the procedural generation just.. forgot to include C stars. The only ones that exist in the game are real stars.
Procedural carbon stars only come in S, CN, CJ and probably some others, plus their surface temperature is a lot higher, so the spectrum is pretty average orange, which is sad...

I would completely agree this is unfortunate. The temperatures of the procedural carbon variants all seem higher than 2000k and all I’ve found are orange. I have seen a few authored S stars that were similar in color and temperature to the one I posted above.
