Time to trial it? (Subscription users)

I doubt making Open Servers being subscription based will make things any better. It would just make poorer people even more off imo. It would be nice to be able to Instance with players easier though. I can instance with most of the people I play with but only when they use a Ethernet cable. Whenever there on Wifi i can never manage getting in the same instance.

''Whenever there on Wifi i can never manage getting in the same instance''

I did'nt even think about that one (always been wired), that has been an issue in other games.
Now i must hatch a plan to get everyone in open to be wired, and i can put this idea to bed :p

So Sooden, you think your needs are so important that you're waiving money at FDEV to divert their efforts away from the rest of us, and the base game content improvements/expansion we all need? Just so you can fill your tips jar on Twitch?

Get out of here, and don't come back. :D

An nor would you have to my comrade. As this would change nothing as we have it now, apart from the optional service of.. well its explained above, and the post prior to this one :) Is more about offering a better source connection to players willing to pay for it. Like having a computer right next to the BGS and Stella forge server, running the game, and players enter that instance and not one generated by a random player (as is P2P). I'm sure i when over this... maybe its me :(

That's a fair answer, the thing is I didn't really explain how I see it properly. When I said I don't do game subs, I should have said I don't do games with subs.

Subs (IMO) are a way of cashing in on some poor numpty whose forgotten to cancel it or just leaves it running out of habit and ends up forking over far more money than video games are worth.

Its an iffy approach I disapprove of on principle and I vote with my wallet.

First thing I checked when I heard about ED (then flight model then is open optional) I'd have given it no consideration at all if it had been a thing.

An OPEN only subscription based premium server that guarantees trouble free instancing would be ok but it would be a big business decision.

I noticed that ED didn't have high sales stats on Steam last year compared to other games and rank in "most simultaneous players online" didn't even have a showing for ED.

So, it seems the market has punished ED possibly, for not having depth/engaging content and for known multiplayer bugs.

The question now is, if they build it (subscription servers) and they will come, or will it upset its existing player base and suffer bad negative reviews, further destroying ED's reputation as a space game.

Would pay to play dedicated servers be the magic bullet that will help sell the game or will creative and engaging game development be a better bet for ED?

Player reviews can make or break a game's sales.

ED is the best in space ship flight gaming but falls short of engaging the single player gamer in an immersive game plot (eg. Dead Space, Mass Effect, StarWars, etc)

Its multiplayer is a touch on mediocre due to instancing issues, other debatable issues such as PP Private or Open, and non-combative CMDRs who complain a lot about lasers hitting their ships.

I still play and enjoy ED and would love to see it succeed past the all the mindless FPS shooters that saturate the market but in the end the game has to be fun and engaging.

Paying to subscribe for a flawless multiplayer experience would depend on the game development of whether it is worth playing multiplayer in ED and for what reason.

Not what i was getting at but it does show one self centred reaction. Because is not something your interested in and you imagine it will impact other development, you have this strange reaction. I guess they assume i Stream?

Any-hows, Think i got what i need from this thread :) The idea is self is never gonna happen... but it was more interesting to see how people reacted on the forums. Could they read the thread. Would they be Reasonable? Would they get aggressive? would they invent meaning i have not put forward?

Seeing who posted here , who was reasonable and who just let it be because they didn't understand what i was getting at, or did'nt care... and who felt like they needed to spread the 'love'. Interesting stuff.

Responses are still happening, and missing the point, people getting angry about something i haven't put forward, and i cant be bother playing with you anymore :) Learnt a lot though this thread, and when it's something really important i have to say, this thread here will have been most enlightening.

Ty for your time peeps, and respect to them that can use a forum like and adult. Oh, and at least other posters got a taste of me, so when i do post and important thread, if they are not gonna read it, or they cant handle a little witty debate, best to sit it out :p

Whilst I disagreed with the concept you proposed, I will give you kudos for at least attempting to have a discussion on what some would say is an emotive topic. Unfortunately for some here, they will automatically disagree with anything posted. Sometimes I am convinced that they don't know why they are against the topic, they just think they have to be seen to be 'against' anything otherwise they won't appear knowledgeable (or be mistaken for a white knight lol). OP don't give up nor hold back, I now know with you I will get an honest answer :D

The concept of a pay per play, subscription model, would, could, work for an Elite based gaming environment, but not this one. The current iteration of Elite is a Sandboxy, developer driven narrative and play type, with associated BGS. That BGS drives the missions, the Trade Finances and the entire faction environment.

What we have is given to us with as many bugs as there are good things. We are constantly battling bugs, deficiencies, broad stroke approaches, and none of it matches up. Don;t get me wrong, We have astounding graphics, probably the best I've ever seen in a VR, and I hear glowing recommendations from the 4k users. We have great flight models, and in the main, the procedural galaxy build is second to none.

But for someone to pay a subscription, they have to feel the entire package is worth the money. For me, yes, I'd love better server performance, but more than that, I'd like a more 'let the player do what they want' approach from Frontier, rather than the forcing me down alleyways, where I have no interest in going. I am not paying, nor would I pay, to allow someone else dictate how I play.

Add into all of that, the history of the current Elite and we see, that Frontier just do not have the chops for a proper MMO on proper servers. The chat system doesn't work, the missions system is a mess, the BGS is bugged. These are foundational requisites to make Elite work. And in 4 years Frontier have not managed to put it all together in a cohesive way.

Elite is a great game, but for the reasons above, I'm out.

Space balls. :D You can't hide behind 'discussion and debate', your agenda was obvious. I'm sure we'd all like an improved multiplayer/co-op experience in ED, but you proposed jumping the queue with a paid subscription service, testing the waters and baiting with cash. Well you got your answer, don't single me out for holding you up. :D

Can only speak for myself but after spending hundreds of Euros on the store on "micro" transactions I'd feel hard done by if FDev introduced a sub model.

They'd also have to seriously up their game in terms of regularly released new content, and sort out the bugs.

Honestly, I'd most likely abandon the game instead.

INDIVIDUAL PERSON: Here's a terrible idea, do you like it
A MILLION PEOPLE: No, it's terrible
INDIVIDUAL PERSON: Haha joke's on you I knew it was terrible and that makes me clever

While a game is always for more fun with other people, that is only a temporary fix in my opinion. Before they should even consider upgrading to a Subscription for some sort of better MP experience, they would need to work on the core game. Do more QoL-Stuff(Yamiks mad a bunch of videos to that point + there is an ongoing suggestion thread again), remove the numerous bugs of current mechanics(I can see the BGS fires from WP 3 of DWII) and add more for people to do as part of the whole "You are a Space Pilot" idea(See my recent suggestions on Salvaging, but there is so so much more stuff I've written in that spirit even if not all of them are good or might be for everyone + that is just me).

Then there is the fact, that a lot of stuff ingame is mostly designed to be done Solo, with stuff like CG or Wing Missions feeling tagged on. So FDev would need to take a good hard look at cooperative emergent Gameplay, be it by building starports as some suggested in the past(although i don't support that idea really) or having Squadrons actually being useful (I made suggestion back in Focused Feebacks and then again beta about this) to PP and C&P improvements one way or another.

Afterwards a bit of polish on everything and when and only when that is done, they should think about better Networking in exchange for Payment.

if you think, i think it was a bad idea... nah. But i did think that a lot of people would not understand what i was saying (and still don't know-IKWCN), because they had already decided what they though , by the time they saw the title.

You should have a good look though the post, made quotes where people have said things i have not said, or even said the opposite of... but they had made up a narrative in their head, then argued it.
Must have been 3 or 4 posts that understand the topic, and gave relative feedback, which i took on board :) But a lot of other got upset when i didn't agree with that they said, because it wasn't relative to what i said... if someone come in and starts a random argument, well i have to point it out :) only fair (and helpful for the person making the post). I know i'm supposed to get upset and back down, get into a personal slagging match and so on... but i don't

And now the thread is turning to character assassination :) talking of my underhand motive and such. Try to Undermine the poster then you have lost the argument... don;t worry, i can hear you thinking...
''but no one agreed with your idea''

to that i say, read, there a lot in the thread... read :) I wanted my idea to be challenged, to get the feedback (and guess what, as much as people think, the forum isn't a representative slice of the community)

I have learnt not to use a question in the title, because people seem to think that means they can just read the title and post. Progress was made :)

ADDED:

The worry here is. Someone can come along to talk about something. Just takes one or 2 angry posters, that have missed the point, to start the ball rolling, and the Original post feels overwhelmed.

Normally turns into a fight, if the OP gets frustrated. So what I found interesting was to see some familiar faces, in on the ‘kill’… along with how people got so upset when I pointed out they where imagining things I had not stated, Rather than go oops (and some did), they double down.

Let’s review:

- When it was understood by some posters, they clearly stated that they where personally not interested. And that is fair
- Some , with a full understanding of its optionality felt it would impact the player base, by splitting it. A very good point, which I took on board :)
- some people explained how they were not having the issues I had outlines, and even gave some interesting info that was very important. Took that on board
- there was even a logical test of my idea, which I liked, as the poster had read and understood the topic before posting
- there was a post that was very much in opposition of what I had outlines, went though that one in detail. Agreed with some point, disagreed with some, and answered questions that had be put forward

Point being, beyond the pettiness and misunderstanding posters, that where mainly negative, the thread had some adult discussion going on. Almost like 2 parallel thread. But I took the time to address everyone (well nearly)

Some where here for a fight, some where hear to debate. Put aside the sillies, and it went well, got some good feedback.

Maybe give the thread a read :)
