To all federal commanders how do we find the president?

I am not holding out much hope for the poor President to be found alive, I think she may have been eaten by Inter-Spacial-Anomalies, so I am hedging all my real money on my Crystal Ball that will find anything...except true happiness.

What I find to be sheer lunacy is not that the President went on a tour of Federation worlds, but that she took along her Vice President. Halsey and Naylor on the same ship on a tour of Federation worlds? Talk about putting your all your eggs in 1 basket. No way should the VP be on a trip with the President. He needs to remain behind to run things until she gets back. He is the second in the power structure.

Regarding the "Search for Halsey", again it seems that the response from Federation-aligned players was lacklustre, disorganised and piecemeal.

Sorry to put it so bluntly, but I'm calling it like I see it.

That community goal needed (IIRC) 250,000 simple system scans to be submitted in order to achieve the Tier IV success. level. If two thousand contributors had each submitted 125 scans, it would have totally nailed the goal.

Even I, a totally non-Federation-aligned pilot, went out and gathered scans to try and solve the "mystery". It's not like you needed to do anything more than fly into a system previously unexplored by you with a basic discovery scanner. You wouldn't even need to hold down "scan" - it pings the main star due to its close proximity and... bingo... one scan.

So 2000 Federation pilots visiting 125 systems each, with a basic discovery scanner installed and powered on. That's all it would have taken.

As things stood, a call went out to find the PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERATION - and only 1978 pilots turned up to help!

What was there to reveal? A Federation fifth column? Independent saboteur? Political rivals implicated? A link to the recent spate of Unknown Artifacts, with seeming alien origin? A Thargoid witchspace trap?

We're now left wondering what could have been uncovered, had the goal been reached...

I don't subscribe to the point of view that FD "should have" made the goal run for longer, "should have" made more of the exploration angle, or "should have" made the target lower. This was, in my opinion, beautifully pitched at the playerbase. It needed a broad sweep of systems with a basic scanner fitted... just to gather data for analysis. Nice mission design, linked in with good storytelling.

So what happened?

Where was the mass mobilisation of Fed-aligned pilots?

They should not have been on the same ship. Making political hay together, certainly. Not sharing the ride though. However incompotent leaders make incompetent decisions.

Seeing that this coincides with the power-play launch, it is almost obvious that the disappearance of the president is purely down to a political power play within the federation between Hudson and Winters. It also sets up the stage for a fierce rivalry with-in the federation for these two powers which gives the federation player base such as myself something to think about. I have to admit I am at a loss at the moment trying to decide which federation power I would pledge allegiance to as I am wondering who is responsible for the presidents disappearance. Winters ofcourse has clear gains with the disappearance of Halsey, and Hudson's recent call for a vote of no confidence could be due to this suspicion. Or perhaps Hudson is responsible for Halseys' disappearance and the call for the no confidence vote is to clinch the presidency himself.... who do I choose? :S

But I must admit that I did not participate with this community goal. Yes, it is shameful that someone who has decided to be fed aligned didn't bother with something so important with the federation. However, as it stands exploration itself for me is very lacklustre, though exploring specific things such as Sagittarius A*, pulsars and various other stellar bodies is very interesting to me (I do plan on doing this at some stage), I didn't bother with this goal as with so many other fed pilots as spending hours, no days scanning arbitrary systems to achieve this CG would be like watching grass grow. I was more interested in the SETI CG that was on at the same time. If however the search for Halsey was the only FED CG going at the time, I would have done it.

Why should I care if we find the president, is there any real impact on the federation or the cmdrs allied to the federation. I'm not being sarcastic or anything, I really want to know. Before she disappeared I wasn't really all that aware of her existence, I haven't been following the story very much. What will happen if we don't find her, won't there just be another election or something? was she an especially good president?

how do you know all these things? Who on earth are Winters and Hudson? I feel like there is a large part of the game I'm missing out on, it's not like I'm a noob either, I read the Galnet stuff sometimes, but it's mostly jibberish, naming people and places I've never heard of. I'd never heard the name Halsey until she dissapeared. Do I have to read the books to actually understand the game? I'm not interested in reading them, they seem badly written.

The question you have to answer is- Are you willing to pay attention to the stories being written by the devs and the community to enhance the reason to play in this galaxy, or do you like to play and not care about the politics, crime, and other issues people create?

The impact to you is similar in how you would play a pen and paper RPG. You can be a creative player, role playing the part and being immersed in the story...with little attention paid to the dice role, or you could be the consummate rules geek, knowing every part of the game and making sure the GM is doing their job correctly. Neither player is better than the other..but the story means much more to one than the other. The same here.

I haven't read the books, but am aware of the various players (I will admit my knowledge of the lineage of the Empire is shaky). I would suggest reading through the back issues of Galnet...all the players and storylines are explained through narrative there. To fully be involved I suggest, rather than skipping over things you've never heard of, search for place names within the map to create the context for the narratives. Learning the names and titles is rote...but recognizing them after you have them learned creates the rest of the context.

If you are new to the game here's a link to the past stories in Galnet:

The Troubles facing President Halsey have been a key point in the Galnet News
Halsey's old Vice president died of a "Heart attack" under suspicious circumstances.
Congressman Hudson has been often making statements to oppose her, he has been shown as a friend of Admiral Vincent who has been in a position of power in all of Halsey Military blunders.
Enough to suggest that Hudson and Vincent has been working together to undermine the President until they could get a vote of no confidence going and Hudson take over. The accident with Spaceship One the last nail in the coffin.

All of this from the Galnet news, nothing from any books.

First step is we get the contract to retrieve the President.
We then need to recruit a bunch of old, unfit and preferably Alcoholic ex marines - wade in, recuse the Pres, get double crossed and look for a grumpy Irish missionary who can tell us where to find an old Dakota in which to escape.

Cue "Thunderstruck".

If it was a drive misjump, in addition to being in the wrong place, such things have been known to send people to the wrong time....

Either the past or the future, she could come out if the jump not knowing anything was wrong because for her the jump went fine, but she is x number of weeks months years in the future.

OR

She has been sent back into the past in which case look for a derilict ship from a long time ago.
