It's easy to check. Fly open to Deciat, Shinrarta, or the nearest Community Goals.Relax guys, 90% of the gankers quit ages ago.. you may as well play in open, it's likely you won't see anyone shooty.
Or check Inara for the threat reports, and you'll see them at their highest in those areas, especially any CG's...It's easy to check. Fly open to Deciat, Shinrarta, or the nearest Community Goals.
I don't like non-game tools used within the game and I try to minimize them. Why play in Open UNLESS you want to PVP?
Literally everything productive you do in the game, as programmed and designed by the dev team, can be accomplished in Solo or Group Play modes: Cargo, Passengers, Bounty / Pirate Hunting, Exploration & Cartography, Thargoid fighting, Station Rescues, Search & Rescue... Everything, except getting ganked.
Group Play even let's you play with other people, but not gankers, so it's the best of both worlds - co-op play without encountering self-aggrandizing ole PK'ers who have to "compensate" for shortcomings / deficiencies by ruining other peoples' fun. Also, if anyone joins who is that type of player, you can kick them and ban then permanently from your private group and friend's list.
The only people who try to convince anyone Open is such an awesome mode are gankers wanting new targets. There is literally no valid positive gameplay reason to be in Open, unless you want to fight people / get killed constantly and have to rebuy your ships and fail missions. None.
To meet people. Why play in Open UNLESS you want to PVP?

I would add. Meet random people and play co-op with them.To meet people.
Because the PvP part of playing in open is 1/10 of the MP interactions. Why play in Open UNLESS you want to PVP?

Well other contacts with randoms in Open = o7 at comms, and thats about that. Otherwise it is somebody trying to gank, somebody trying to troll and so on.Because the PvP part of playing in open is 1/10 of the MP interactions.
Open = PvP is a wrong equation, so you are almost totally (or 9/10) wrong.

I am curious about this. Generally, I only play in open when out in the black or in special circumstances. What kinds of non-PVP interactions do you have in Open?
I normally run in Mobius unless I am farming materials or running a busy CG. (Macdonald Settlement had worse traffic jams than LA)
That can easily be accomplished by hanging around the ED Discord server for 2 seconds, where you are almost always going to meet real people, if you wish. You might even have random people stop by if you're in your own "Wing" channel in the Discord, instead of the main chat. You can also talk to other people while doing your own thing, or invite them to your Group and play MP. It's how I met not only my squad mates, but also how I ended up with multiple pages of friends I can play with...To meet people.
catch-22.That can easily be accomplished by hanging around the ED Discord server for 2 seconds, where you are almost always going to meet real people, if you wish.
The thing is that: because Frontier will do nothing about PK'ers / gankers, it is SAFER for the newbs to play Group Play and find someone in the ED Discord who is safe and willing to show them the ropes, versus playing in Open where they are getting continuously ganked / suckered into being a mining slave (remember that a while back?), getting frustrated and turned off from their effort being for naught, and then (rightfully) telling others who are wondering about the game how much it sucks...catch-22.
New people would prefer doing this with in-game tools instead of using Google et al. to find them but sadly Frontier didn't provide these.
Gosh, open sounds terrifying. The thing is that: because Frontier will do nothing about PK'ers / gankers, it is SAFER for the newbs to play Group Play and find someone in the ED Discord who is safe and willing to show them the ropes, versus playing in Open where they are getting continuously ganked / suckered into being a mining slave (remember that a while back?), getting frustrated and turned off from their effort being for naught, and then (rightfully) telling others who are wondering about the game how much it sucks...
I have made many suggestions to fight gankers or strengthen the defense of ships. And I can understand why it is not introduced. As it can affect the role-players playing the role of villains. This thread still going?
Why aren't we all posting on the new ones on the same subject?
How would you do that practically?I have made many suggestions to fight gankers or strengthen the defense of ships. And I can understand why it is not introduced. As it can affect the role-players playing the role of villains.
But why do not introduce a means of separating pirates and gankers I do not quite understand.
