Newcomer / Intro Too close to a star, entering Supercruise is interrupted by overheating

Hi!

I was dumb enough to exit from supercruise to check a signal near a star. It was interesting but now my system is at 54% heat, can't engage supercruise to go away so my hair is waving at brutal 220.

And the 54% heat is permanent. Every unsuccessful tries to engage supercruise cause damage in my ship but in normal cruise, I'll never reach colder space so no chance for a successful try to engage supercruise… (Hm, at least I'll die listening nice music that just begun.) Am I really trapped? Or any idea?

Or next time what should I acquire to avoid situations like this? :)

Heat Sinks. (Will lower your temp enough, that the heat gain won't be damaging)

For now you'll just have to take the heat damage and pray it's not too bad.
Put the Star directly behind you, to get out as quickly as you can and good luck!! :) o7

edit: let us know what happens [up]

I got stuck like that for a while back when I was in the freewinder. I managed to get a few short little cruises to creep away from the star, wait for cooldown, creep away, wait for cooldown. Eventually, I got far enough out that I didn't drop, and limped my way to a port for repairs.

I don't know if a high-wake can be interrupted by heat (though the charge time is a lot longer so you will take damage from it) but if not jumping to a nearby system is another option.

One thing you could also try to reduce your heat is turn off modules except those that you absolutely need for supercruise. Even sensors, literally everything but thrusters, frame-shift drive and life support. Hell, even ditch the life support while your FSD is spooling up. If you're still on an E-rated power plant, turning modules off can have a pretty significant effect on your temperature.

Very good advice + rep.

After following the excellent advice about switching off all non essential modules when you get into cruise remember to switch the sensors back on as these are required to establish docking permission, which you should be doing at the nearest station not just to do any repairs to the scorch damage but also to recharge your life support.

I would have turned off irreverent modules, found a suitable nearby system to high wake to, and gone for it.
A bit of damage won't kill you as long as you don't keep on doing it.
Heat sinks? Maybe, but I rarely bother having them.

Depends a bit on where you are and your fuel situation doesn't it? It's fine if you know the area - even better if there's a station to repair at - but a thousand lightyears into the black, especially if you're low on fuel (speaking personally, all any of us can do) I'd tend to low wake and stabilise the heat situation first myself. For me there's always a chance - if you're exploring and don't know what's coming - you could wake (hot) straight into a Binary system. The OP is already par boiled, wouldn't like to send him out of the frying pan into a bigger frying pan and if he wakes he might need to scoop fuel.

:D

What's preventing you from engaging supercruise? Can't be the heat. Sure, Celeste will start complaining at 75%, and your modules will start taking damage above 100%, but your ship is tough - there are documented cases of people surviving 324% (and winning a race), and anti-Thargoid fighters routinely sterilize their ships at 210% to boil off the Tharg's caustic spit.

If you want to keep your damage to a minimum, yes, switch off everything you don't need, then point yourself away from the star and go for it. Otherwise, just go for it. If she bothers you, switch of Celeste's nagging.

For anyone worried about heat damage, I would suggest you do the heat test experiment.
Take a cheap ship, like an Adder, go outside the station, and engage silent running. You will be amazed how long it takes to actually explode, and realise that you really can ignore all those scarey sparks.

Heat damage has been the most expensive repair I've had to do so far... well other than a rebuy but that's another story. I think the repair bill was in the neighborhood of 2000 credits or there abouts. I kept getting a message about a frame shift drive error on the way to a port after I was able to get it going. It held together but I didn't run at top speed and zipped in for a quick repair. On a positive note it did leave some more interesting paint wear on my ship and I kept that. That paint wear is a badge of honor on my boats...

I just made the journey from Maia to Deciat non-stop in an Adder - 23 jumps, fastest route (requires an extra fuel tank though, there are not enough stars to refuel otherwise). I found that once arriving at the star, one has to throttle to 75%, otherwise the Adder might be too lame and get some heat from the sun. Fuel scooping is anyway more pleasant with 75% throttle. I guess I will make that a habit for my other ships with fuel scoop as well - this way they do not build up heat when jumping from system to system non-stop over a longer distance.

Depending on what you're flying, it's usually best not to max out the scoop rate on multirole ships and those without a massive scoop/tank ratio. Sure a DBX or Asp with an a-rated plant can happily sit at the maximum scoop rate forever, but most other ships are better off just throttling down and skimming at 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the maximum rate. Get your next jump lined up while your tank fills and just throttle up when you're done.
