Too late for colonization?

Baffling to me how people have kicked off about systems being 'taken' at any sort of relative scale.

I managed to nab a very forgettably named one in Col 285 Sector, albeit (by pure chance!) a good 'un - 33 bodies, pretty much all icy/rocky, although nearly all landable, one with atmosphere and 8 bio signals, and both metallic and icy rings available on my gas giants. Looking forward to building it out, but even so I'm not anticipating this being the long-term jewel in the crown of my mini empire.

Can't wait to really get out there in few months and find something more far-flung and quirky to call my second, third, or eleventh home...I think colonisation will really come into its own once this initial rush dies back a bit, and we manage to make some significant moves into areas that aren't basically already classed as 'the Bubble'. There'll be treats galore just waiting to be stumbled upon - patience everyone!

Don't panic; you are right. There are essentially infinite good systems; by any reasonable definition of a good system. I'm not sure how many of us even fully understand what a good system for colonization looks like yet. I know I don't. Some things I'll look for next time (if I colonize again) are:
1) A primary port location close to the arrival point (subtly marked with a flag in the colonization view of the system map)
2) Plenty of landable planets/moons to build on (I have this already). I don't think it's clear whether system resources like rings even really matter yet, but many others know more than I. There's no telling when exactly the feature will be turned back on, so there's probably plenty of time to look into what others are doing, figure out what you want, and scout potential sites without anyone grabbing anything out from under you.
whilst i dont know if rings help the economy...... i am hoping they will generate RES sites plus the idea of mining in "my" system makes me happy.

so rings are an absolute priority to me. both my 2 main bookmarked systems to try to bag one of have rings... one is an ice one with a tritium hotspot, the other has a number of rings but the only hot spots are for core mining so not sure which i will try to get my flag on 1st.

What I've bee confused about, since day one, is why I see colonization ships listed in the nav panel of power play systems (I thought colonized systems were omitted from power play) and back during the first week, I seen colonization ships listed in my nav panel in engineering systems (I thought settled systems were omitted from colonization as well), like Muang.

Yeah I had a few 'huh?!' moments of seeing them in systems I already knew full well were fully NPC colonised since initial game launch.

Not all claimed system will be built, maybe just wait for a few weeks see if the system is abandoned by the contractor.

Or primary port finished but useless. Like this system in my neighborhood with the station 72,000 LS from it's sun. The algorithm that automatically places your first port on your system's outer rim caught many people by surprise.

It is believed by some on the forums that these are the colonisation ships that have completed their work on someone’s primary port and have returned to the system where the colonisation license was purchased.

When a fleet carrier enters its jump phase, its nav marker appears on both the current and the destination system maps simultaneously. I suspect this is the case with colony ships when the building is complete. They leave the system by jumping "back" to the origin system, and during that 15 min countdown, they appear on both system maps. I suspect they simply despawn upon jumping, though. I haven't tried going to a colony ship in a previously occupied system to see if it is actually there. It is definitely disorienting to see it on the nav panel.

They are certainly a nice feature to have for gameplay, although I personally prefer mining where there are no pirate spawns. I did look for rings myself as well, and didn't find them in the small area of space I wanted to colonize in. I'm not seeing much reason to make a colony system a home system, though. It will take a lot to make a colony system almost as good as whatever system(s) players have found to base ourselves out of.

I wondered about this too. It turns out that after a colonization ship has completed its “job”, it will return to the system from which it initially departed. So if people are using the colonization contact and making claims FROM a system, then eventually the colonization ship will end up in that system after the first station is built. I don’t know how long those ships linger in their departure system, but I think the purpose (apart from giving the game a little more verisimilitude) is to give any CMDRs who were still parked on the Colonization Ship an opportunity to undock. Otherwise a lot of large pad haulers could potentially be stranded in a mostly undeveloped system if the Colonization Ship simply despawned and left them out in space.

Ahh that makes sense! I didn't think about them as having had an origin system lol

Caveat: this is just something that someone else told me. No word from Frontier on this and for all I know it could in fact be a synchronization bug for all I know.

But it does make sense to me.

One thing I never checked but was wondering - do the ships spawn in at their origin point before departure, and if so could you dock on one and ride it to the colonization location? I’m guessing “no”,
But:

That would be cool.

Also, it would be a fun feature for freelance haulers, to just hop onboard any old Colonization Ship that happens to be parked in an established system, to then be taken to a “job site”.

It’d be like the Spacship version of being a day laborer hopping into the back of a pickup truck at the Home Depot parking lot.

and during that 15 min countdown, they appear on both system maps.
You can actually hitch a ride back on one like you would a carrier if you’re feeling especially lazy. I did once just to see what it would do. The verdict, it bugged some of my audio into being silent and skipped the final stage of the jump animation to just ‘appear’. Managed to undock just fine and head to a nearby station.

Hey all. I'm just coming back to the game and excited to try colonization. I've seen a lot of comments saying that "all the good systems are taken" which makes me think I misunderstood how colonization works.

Can't I just colonize systems 10ly from the newly colonized systems? If so, what does it mean that "good systems" are taken? Is it just that people were rushing to colonized the systems that were bordering the bubble? If good system just means its composition (eg: ringed worlds, etc) then I was expecting to find plenty of good systems by just branching off of the systems people have colonized.

Thanks
I wouldn't worry mate there's still plenty of decent systems out there, I've found quite a few unique ones with quirky orbits and great views and am just waiting for the buble to catch up with me. Closest one is 50lys away so when the big freeze end's it won't take long to get there with the second gold rush effect in action. In essence worry ye not there's still plenty out there to find 👍
