Ships Top 10 Combat Ships!

Another day, another article. Today I’ve covered the top 10 combat ships in my opinion! I’ve tried to cover combat ships available across all budgets, and written a small paragraph on why a commander may prefer flying with that option. I was lucky enough to have an Anaconda as my first combat ship, followed by a Federal Corvette. I missed a lot of middle ground! Since then, I played around with a few different combat ships, and recorded my experience with them. Which combat ships are your favourites? Any diamonds that I missed out? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Another nicely done article, Kathy.

Reading how you've structured the article, you might consider not ranking them by number. You've specified the niche for each ship, and that is probably sufficient. So, rather than 'Top 10 Combat Ships', maybe 'Top Combat Ship for Each Category'.

It's semantics, I know.

Well presented article, also it mostly matches my experience. I also skipped the Vulture in the beginning but when I got the free Xmas Vulture, I took it out but slightly disappointed in the beginning, however as soon as it was engineered, it became my favorite for CZ combat, it used to be the Chief. Just the engine noise of the Vulture is not my favorite. The Mk II for me sounds the best. I don‘t see the Courier listed, in my experience it is pretty good at combat, even better than the other smalls like the Cobra, the Cobra is more for BGS or general mission work, in my opinion. It does require top level engineering and good to better flying skills, but so does most of the small ships.

Nice one.

However, when i'm doing combat (pve) it's either Corvette or the Krait mk2 or the Vulture. So as far as i'm concerned, that's a Top3
And for PVP, basically we're talking about Top1 - FDL

I did combat in a C3, but only when forced - for example, in December 2019 my fresh Steam alt took part in the last CG of the year.
Really fresh toon. But it still managed to get like 60+ millions (which was Huge for a fresh character) by getting into top50% for the bounty cg (in C3) and top50% for the trade cg (in Type-6) obviously flying small nonengineered ships.
That and the lingering effects of the Golconda CG meant that my fresh toon was suddenly able to afford a Federal Dropship - which was my main ship (mini-python) for almost 2 months.

But, getting back to the topic, combat in that C3 was more like leeching from System Authority ships in a High Res than proper standalone combat 😇

I agree with you - the Top 10 format is generally reported to do well on gaming sites that aren’t specifically related to the game. Focusing on niches makes more sense for players of the game, who understand the purpose of the niches. I’ve attempted to meet some sort of middle ground which covers both, being accesssible for newer players but also serving to review each ship in the eyes of a more experienced player. Thank you for your kind words, Mr Wonko!

100%, I recently upgraded to a Vulture from a C3 on my second account on PlayStation. Moving from a Corvette to the C3 was rough for me, and I hated how squishy I felt. The Vulture makes me feel a lot more secure in my abilities to defend myself!

I absolutely love my Vulture. If I had to pick my all-time favorite ship, regardless of role, it'd probably be the Vulture.

I've actually been pretty impressed with my Courier, too. I've been using it as my Odyssey grind ship, and if I get interdicted (by NPCs), I'll fight any small ship - except a Vulture - as well as Kraits and Asps. I'd consider taking on a Python, too.

You didn't miss anything because sorry to point out.. but you didn't write anything you straight copied and paced The Pilot's reviews of ships.

I did watch them a few months ago, so some of his points did definitely stick in my head. I can safely say that it wasn’t a conscious decision, but I’m not surprised that his points shine through!

sorry if i sounded combative but can you confirm that the Q&A job you hold isn't with Frontier developments?

Yes, I can confirm this. That particular job was with a mobile games studio, but I’m not willing to go into more detail in regards to which studio it is.

In regards to embedding the Pilot’s videos - yes, I linked them, as I remember them being great videos. I didn’t watch them as I was writing the article. My understanding of your statement was that the TEXT of my article was ripped from the Pilot, which was not a conscious decision I made. Hope that clears stuff up for you!

You can't see FAS as an improved version of Vulture, it's fundamentally wrong.
The Chief as an improved version of FAS is fine.

Agree with first statement, but Chieftain is sidegrade to FAS, if you want to be efficient you are forced to use rails on small hardpoints on chief, but at the same time FAS pilot is "forced to use fixed weps on bottom hardpoints to use ship for max potential. FAS much more survivable in wings in pvp than chief, 20+m/s faster and without easy to hit thrusters are worth it, also bigger bi-weaves on chieftain hard press pips menagement with any sensible hard hitting weapons

The article says correctly, the Chief needs more module protection.
