Tracking exploration activity

Time to update with November's EDSM statistics. There was a nice increase in new systems, most likely attributable to the game going free for one week on the Epic Store (from Nov. 19 to 26). Frontier said that this led to a new all-time peak in concurrent players, but the gains on EDSM have been much more modest than that. Little wonder, of course, since it's not like lots of new players would immediately start uploading there. Also, this is just subjective, but to me it looked like that since then, there has been somewhat more activity here on the exploration subforum too. In any case, this should be a nice start to the coming holiday season and sales.

Also worth noting that a new exploration CG has started today, with a new kind of emphasis on ammonia worlds. I'm just writing this down here for the future, and it'll be interesting to see whether the next week will see any change on EDSM, especially with the number of AWs. (Probably not though, since the best way to rack up CG points is to run around mapping already-uploaded AWs near the bubble.)
Good luck, Commanders!

Time for an "unscheduled" post and update to the daily data. The reason: I took a look at EDSM statistics during the recent CG, the one (mostly) about collecting Ammonia Worlds. (See its CG thread.) Now, there was some speculation here and there, with some saying that explorers will likely be flocking back to the bubble to take part, and so on: so, I thought I'd take a look before the month was over, because I expected that nobody will care much about this by that time.

But before I go into this in more detail, another thing: in addition to the earlier 30-day moving averages, I also added 7-day charts too. The reason being that there's some additional detail to these that gets lost in the former: the cyclic stuff, or things that get smoothed over, like the Chapter Four launch's spike ending after a bit and then spiking again when DW2 launches. On the 30-day average, that one looks like a continuous line.

Now, some background first. Gonna put this under a spoiler tag so that those who are familiar with all this can just skip easier to the results.
This CG had an overpowered CG-exclusive reward, a DSS that gives a +40% probe radius instead of the +30% engineered one obtainable by everyone. Let's not forget that a month ago (Nov. 11, see here and here), there were a pair of CGs, one trade and one anti-xeno combat, which gave an overpowered CG-exclusive FSD instead, which were much more useful for explorers than this DSS - and yet, these two had 4,764 and 2,871 contributors, and based on the EDSM activity charts, you couldn't tell when the CGs were, there was nothing out of the ordinary.
It's also worth noting that originally, Frontier said that the overpowered FSDs will only be available to the top 25% of contributors, and altered this to the top 75% after the CGs were over. With this month's DSS CG, it was said to be top 75% from the start; so, there was no danger of folks looking at the requirements and deciding not to bother trying.

Now, this Ammonia World CG had a surprising 10,710 contributors. This is even more impressive considering that past exploration CGs last year had between 2,600-3,800 contributors. (Of course, starting an exploration CG back at the bubble while DW2 was well underway was a questionable idea.) Since contributions were calculated differently this time around, I'm not sure if comparing them with previous such CGs would be worthwhile.

Here are the results then:

First off, Stars auto-scanned / Systems didn't budge at all, which most likely means that there was no flocking back of explorers from anywhere.
Second, perhaps Bodies scanned / Systems decreased a bit, but even if it did, it was minor and well within the usual fluctuations.

However, on Dec. 6, which was a Sunday (and new systems uploaded are the largest on Sundays), there was a large spike. There were 72,965 new systems uploaded then, a number which was last seen only during DW2. Generally, all the days of the CG saw increased activity here, and bear in mind that this number is after deducting revisited systems. The percentage of those saw a marked increase as well, a +2-3% above usual levels, peaking at 19.64% on Dec. 9, the day before the CG ended. (They end in the early hours of the day, server time.)

After this, things seem to be returning to usual levels, though it's still a bit soon to tell. Said usual level was on an upward trend anyway, most likely thanks to the influx of new players from the Epic store gifts. We'll see what the new levels will end up being, although don't expect things to level out for long - Odyssey should come out in a few months anyway.

In the meantime, happy holidays, and see you in the new year!

Since they were close enough together, I decided to wait with the monthly update until the squadron leaderboard season was over too. Good thing I did: looking at the two together illustrates quite well that EDSM and squadron leaderboard points seem to have decoupled this time around. Sure, as I wrote about after the Ammonia Worlds CG above, EDSM got a significant increase in systems, which had mostly gone back to its earlier trend since. (No change in Planets / Systems, slight increase in Stars / Systems: some more people heading coreward perhaps?) Pretty much what could be expected. December finished strong, a marked increase over non-DW2 months (after the FSS), but not at DW2 levels. However, in comparison to this, the squadron leaderboards more than doubled since the previous one, eight weeks ago, and set some new records as well.

For the gold medal, Hutton Orbital Truckers smashed the previous record: it was 50 billion points then, it is 76 billion points now. Moreover, unlike some previous seasons, this time it wasn't just the one squadron contributing much more: the top ten's total set a new one as well. (Although it's worth noting that if PC Season 2 weren't only four weeks long, it might still have been the highest.) Moving down into the #11-#100 range, we get an increase that's above +50% than previous highs, and from #101-#1000, it's over double the previous. So, which might it be? Lots of new squadrons from the Epic giveaway? Lots of squadrons doing more exploration now because of the CG? Both?
A bit of a shame I didn't note down some numbers weekly, as I had originally planned to do, but it fell by the wayside. Might have been interesting to see how numbers went around the CG. Oh well, it's good stuff nonetheless.

Now to see how things will change from here on. Will EDSM activity catch up, or was this a one-time thing, and will squadron leaderboard activity fall back? I'll try and keep track weekly, as the next squadron leaderboard season should be on March 4: hopefully, we'll have had at least the Odyssey alpha by then, so what effect that might have should be interesting to see too.

This month's update is here, although with the EDSM outage due to the migration, I'd caution against seeing too much into it just yet. So I won't say anything about it now, and we'll see where things go next month.

There was one surprise today though: in today's Q&A about "first footfall", Frontier dropped a new number on how much of the galaxy has been explored - 201 million systems to date. So I added this new point to the sheet as well (see the "Official numbers" subsheet). Looks like there has been a marked increase in new systems per day then, although still not the highest it has been, based on the data points Frontier gave us. It's nearly +7.9 million new systems in total (over 82 days), and of those, about +3.4 million have been added to EDSM. That's 43%, and while that's down from 46% last time, it's still very impressive. Especially considering how only a fraction of the player base uploads to EDSM.

First comes the exploration squadron leaderboard activity update, and I'll get around to the EDSM stuff in a few days.
Well, compared to the previous season, there was a huge drop: pretty much everything has dropped by half, some things even more. Especially the top ten seems quite drastic, being quite near to Season 8's negative record. Below that things seem better though, especially in the #100-#1,000 range: from the huge influx of players, seems like there was at least a lasting effect there.

However, let's not forget that Season 14 was an outlier, setting new records. When comparing this current season to the earlier ones, the picture isn't nearly as bad. Seems more like a return to standard form, only with the top ten not doing well, but the lower ranges propping things up, to what would be a remarkably nice total for the top 1000 squadrons, slightly topping Season 1. In fact, there is a negative record here: the top ten vs #100-#1,000 ratio is only 22.71%. So it looks like a good number of less active (with regards to exploration) squadrons stayed. I haven't been tracking the number of squadrons, but @Ian Doncaster has: according to him, last season we had 22,220 (see here), and looking at things now, we had 23,620.

Oh, and in the previous season, I said that "hopefully, we'll have had at least the Odyssey alpha by [March 4]", and well, look where we are now. Well, I'm not going to say this again, for the next eight weeks :) I do hope so, but we'll see.

Time for February's EDSM statistics. As a reminder, in January, there was an outage due to migration: by now, even the earlier statistics should have cleared up.

So, much like how the squadron activity that got a boost from all the Epic Store players has dropped down to around previous levels, so has the EDSM activity. Although the original boost there was nowhere near as large as it was on squadron leaderboards, in-bubble traffic, and so on. During February, there was a steady decline, and it seems we're now back to the original low levels of stagnation.
Since my last post, the Odyssey alpha has been announced for the end of the month, March 29. I'll be curious to see what effect that'll have on the live game: after all, back when Horizons first came out (into a paid beta), we couldn't track anything.

More interestingly, the Bodies / Systems and the auto-scanned Stars / Systems have both gone up significantly in January, just before the EDSM migration, and they have stayed there since. The Bd/Sys ratio might increase due to a number of reasons, but the St/Sys is automatic, so it most likely means that more explorers have gone coreward. As a reminder, this decreased significantly back in 2020 March, which was when the price of the upcoming fleet carriers was announced. People likely flocked back to the bubble to mine, and the ratio remained around the same level since. Now, since the holidays ended (as a reminder, the Epic sale was in the middle of November), the ratio quickly shot up, and is now back at the previous base level.
Bodies / Systems, on the other hand, have gone higher, and have in the past month held a high level that was surpassed for a month during DW2. So I guess it's not just folks exploring in more dense areas here, but also an influx of new players who are more likely to use the FSS on more bodies for now. I'll be curious to see how long this will last.

That's all then. See you next month, hopefully after the alpha's start!

The Odyssey alpha actually came, and it's time to look at the March statistics for EDSM. It doesn't look like the start of the alpha (March 29) brought any significant decrease: instead, it was a marked decrease over the entire month. But, curiously enough, there was a smaller bump right around the beginning, and the two offset each other to give almost exactly the same monthly numbers as February's. Of course, it does help that February had 28 days, while March had 31; the daily numbers have seen a considerable decrease. Little wonder, as many explorers are preparing for Odyssey.

Interestingly enough, the Planets / Systems ratio is still staying high, ever since January. Probably an effect of all the new Epic players, being more enthused about using the FSS so far. This marks three months where the ratio is over 7, while it was above that only for one month during DW2. For reference, depending on where in the galaxy you are, the average body count per system is somewhere between 10 and 12.

Next up will be the squadron leaderboard season in 24 days: we'll see how their activities will be, with the Odyssey alpha going on.

And now, time for something unexpected! After I made my last post, I noticed some oddities in the data, and after we dug around a bit, @Orvidius found that due to some unexpected behaviours from EDSM in regard to timestamps, there were some fixes to be made for the EDAstro data. These are mostly done, and while some of it is still running, the numbers shouldn't change much now. But they have changed from what we had before, quite surprisingly in some ways.
So, I made a copy of the "original" data before the fixes, for comparison, and you can find it here.

Now then, here are some things that came to light:

1. The FSS hurt exploration activity more than I thought
Which was surprising, as I thought that the fixes would mostly mean mostly just less new bodies over time, and not less systems.
Before, based on the EDSM data it seemed that the FSS at best didn't change exploration activity (as per new systems discovered), and at worst led to slightly less, now it looks like it at best led to slightly less activity, and more likely, considerably less. This does reflect the official numbers that Frontier gave us, mind.

Some numbers to add more detail to this. From 2017-04-01 (a date I chose because that seems to be from when EDSM had a decent sample) to the FSS's reveal, the median of new systems per day was 36,536. After it, it's 30,137. That's with DW2 included: if we are to check only after DW2 ended, then it's 29,129. (Which actually isn't that big of a difference.)
This is remarkably similar to the official numbers, by the way: -17.5% on EDSM, -16% on total official.
Also, bear in mind that this time range includes the Epic giveaway.

Well, there we have it then: no matter how you slice the numbers, people explored more systems before the FSS than they did after.

2. The "fleet carrier decrease" in the auto-scanned new Stars / Systems is gone
There's a good lesson there. That supposed decrease wasn't due to players flocking back to the bubble, it was due to some errors instead. With the exception of the plunge when people started abandoning DW2 (and with the new explorers, many of them abandoning exploration altogether), the changes were mostly smaller. There still appears to be a curious slight downward trend though. As always, bear in mind that stars are auto-scanned, so scanning habits don't figure in here. The most likely explanation is explorers as a whole are slowly moving farther from the core - the DSSA carriers should have helped with this.

3. New Bodies scanned / Systems looks different now as well
While scanned Bodies / Systems took a dive as DW2 wound down, once they recovered, there has been no significant increase since this January. The latter was an interesting feature I noticed, and turned out to be false. However, the launch of fleet carriers and the Epic give-away seems to have led to more frequent and higher waves. It could likely be an effect of more new players coming in, scanning more at first, then either leaving or scanning less.
Oh, and the lead-up to the carriers (when their price was first announced, and when the first beta launched and we learned that it's going to be significantly more than five billion Cr) is also visible there.

Another interesting thing, but not big enough to warrant a fourth point: while the ELWs / Systems chart had changed to be pretty constant after the FSS, the AWs / Systems went the other way around. Both these come with the usual caveats, however, so don't read too much into them.

Well, that should be all then. Hopefully. This might also mean that my monthly update texts will be shorter in the future, but we'll see.

Time for PC Season 16's exploration leaderboard results. As it turns out, it's much the same as the previous season, only slightly lower. Top ten is mostly the same, but there's slightly reduced activity below the top ten, and a record low share on #100-#1,000. So, pretty standard fare overall, and the Odyssey alpha doesn't seem to have had a significant effect; maybe that record low share on the lower ends was due to having some explorers "drop out" temporarily is much more significant in squadrons which might only have a handful of such players.

Next up in some days will be April's EDSM statistics, but it doesn't look like there will be any surprises there either. But hey, who knows? :)

New update for April, with no surprises whatsoever. The decline continued at a steady pace, and the alpha's launch wasn't really visible either. (Maybe if you're looking with a magnifying glass.) If this continues at the same pace until Odyssey launches on the 19th, then activity still won't hit a negative record though.

Well, next month's update should be more interesting. Until then!

Here we go, time for the update after the infamous Odyssey "launch". First off, we had some official numbers a few days ago, on a stream: thanks go to @stringtheery for pointing this out here! Since the last time official numbers were reported in February, there have been +7.33 million new systems in total. Which makes for +66,000 new systems per day, compared to +96,000 during the previous range. Ouch. Bear in mind that Odyssey's launch barely figured into this though - the data is from May 27, so eight days only.
During this time, EDDN had +3.5 million new systems uploaded, so the Crowdsourced / Total ratio was at an impressive 47.75%.
Also, while not directly related to exploration, it's worth mentioning here that Odyssey's release set an all-time high player count on Steam.

So, how do the EDDN numbers look? If you were expecting a spike of activity, well, that's missing completely. The only spike was a downward one that's usual for launch days where the servers are down for long. Otherwise, the numbers we have since the 19th seem to have just levelled off the previous downward trend, and it's either recovering from the bottom (which was the same level than that of the long stagnation) or staying there. A bit soon to tell.

What about exobiology then? Maybe things are this way because people spend more time doing that. On one hand, the number of bodies scanned per system has stayed the same, so folks don't seem to have been encouraged to fully scan more systems. (Although in the absence of scan percentage data from EDSM, this is an indirect observation.) On the other hand, since Odyssey's launch, the ratio of revisited systems has increased somewhat, so I guess that's a good indicator of folks going after exobio stuff.
I'll look into measuring exobio activity in some ways later, but things are still up in the air, so figuring out what would be best from what's available will have to wait.

What isn't available though is the exobiology squadron leaderboard that we were promised. (Mercenary, too.) So that part is out, at least for now. I wonder if they might be holding that back due to the current season not having started during Odyssey, but given that the entire interface there seems to have forgotten about Odyssey stats (including personal ones), we'll see.

Speaking of squadron leaderboards, it's worth mentioning here that since Odyssey launched, the LYR bonus no longer seems to apply to squadron points gained. (Nor to rank progression.) So that's going to make the current season's statistics somewhat skewed, too. That one will be in 19 days, so that will be the next scheduled update here then.
As usual, thanks for reading!

Interesting - there was a major spike in in-bubble activity over EDDN. Possibly everyone is getting their new suits together first before heading out?
Cool, good to know! Maybe it's that, or maybe it's just that all the new or returning players have flocked to the bubble instead, much more interested in all the new stuff there than in the new surface content out in the galaxy. This should be clearer by next month.

Here comes the PC exploration leaderboard for Season 17. First off, note that Odyssey went live part-way through this season, and from what I hear, the LYR bonus no longer counts for neither rank progression nor squadron leaderboard points, it "only" triples the credits received. I'd still like to get some extra verification on this though. Edit: it looks like this was the case earlier than Odyssey.

Season 18 will be the first fully-Odyssey season then, and it looks like neither Exobiology nor Mercenary ranks will receive their own leaderboards, contrary to what Frontier said before. A pity, but understandable. Just to make sure, I checked, and exobio sample sales don't count towards the exploration leaderboard either.

So, on to the results then! They seem to mirror the EDSM trends very well: things are still slightly trending down, but haven't set negative records. It's more like a return to previous low times, and well, summer's here (in the Northern hemisphere anyway), so no surprises there.

In any case, contrary to what many people (including myself) would have expected, Odyssey hasn't moved the squadron leaderboards significantly, neither above nor below. Pretty much business as usual, with slightly more competition in the top 4 than in the previous two seasons.

Back in a bit over a week with June's crowdsourced results then.

Well we at Canonn noticed this 2 (I think) seasons ago, so that wasn't new in the last season.

Edit: It's off since march at least.

Ah, good to know. I thought I checked with others soon after that 4x CG, but it might have been before FD decided to kill the bonus for leaderboard points. None in our squadron tried to use LYR since, only one player after Odyssey went live. And yep, can confirm that the carrier malus still applies.
Amended my previous post then.

Another month, another EDSM update. The decline in new systems that has been going since January continues, and if it keeps this pace, it'll set a new record low in a month or so. (For reference, the current record lows were in 2018. November, after the FSS was unveiled but before the Chapter Four update went live.) In the other stats, things are the same.

Just the other day though, I thought of something. It would be easy enough to blame small numbers here on Odyssey's rather botched PC launch, but this has been going on since the middle of January. Also, the recent combat CG which involves the Federation has surprisingly not been the Feds curbstomping the opposition, but quite the other way around. So I was reading what others have thought about why this could be, somebody mentioned (although probably in jest) that many of the Xbox players are MIA. Then I recalled hearing a few times that the consoles felt like ghost towns lately. So I looked at the EDDN Status tracker, and noticed that of EDSM and EDSM - Console seems to be much lower than I remembered.
Bear in mind though that this isn't exact, I didn't note down the numbers there before. So it's just a hunch instead. Things seem to line up well though: on January 13 this year, Frontier announced that Odyssey will be delayed to autumn on consoles, and then, EDSM starts decreasing soon afterwards. A good portion of that might have been all the console players who just left the game until the expansion releases. (Generally, based on in-game data and DW2 statistics, console explorers would make up around 20% of the total.)
Or perhaps somebody has some data that could be used to prove my hunch is wrong.

In any case, Odyssey's launch didn't reverse things here. Quite the opposite instead, it seemed to speed up the decline somewhat. Then there's summer (in the Northern hemisphere anyway), so everything pretty much came together.
Well, we'll see next month if the new systems go lower than ever before; the next squadron leaderboard will be 44 days from now anyway.

This time it's not a tracking update, but something that came out as relevant news recently: @MattG found that Odyssey gives a +30% bonus to mapping payout for bodies mapped while playing the expansion, see this post. I just checked, and this bonus does apply to leaderboard points gained too.

Of course, just how much this increased total squadron exploration leaderboard points in practice is anyone's guess: first, the overwhelming majority of people don't map everything they scan, and second, we don't know how many explorers played in Odyssey and how many in Horizons. Still, it's something to keep in mind, especially as we approach the end of the first season that'll be fully after Odyssey. (The expansion went live during the previous leaderboard season.)

I can also imagine a lot of players revisiting their favorite places to see how they look with the new planetary tech before going out exploring.
You should see a spike though soon, Apollo 15 Anniversary Expedition is going out with 550 players registered on EDSM.
