Trackir 5 oh yes why did i wait so long

I have been pondering over the trackir 5 for a while now, I built my own headtracker and used the freetrack software, but its been hit and miss buggy, been using freetrack for a while with flight sims ect. But like i said was buggy could work great for a hour or 2 then it would go daft or just stop working. Anyway i bought the trackir 5 with pro-clip from www.flightstore.co.uk only 10mins drive from me ;) And i must say works like a charm with pro clip or hat-clip both for elite and my flight sims. Pro-clip is great for when i need too put the headphones on and the cap-clip is good when using normal audio, i would highly recomend. By the way i think flightstore are the cheapest in the u.k even on e-bay a 2nd hand 1 will set you back in the region of about £125 with pro clip. There as been a cheaper version from china at about £75 on ebay but i wouldn't take the gamble.

A probably silly question from me. How sensitiv is it? Would I have to turn my head much or just a bit to either side to pop up the panels?
Edit: It is about the TrackIR

Got mine adjusted so I'm literally looking at the bottom left or right quadrant of the screen and that's where the panel appears, no squinting sideways or anything. You can easily alter the angle multipliers, so, for example, 15 degrees of headturn = 45 degress of in game turn or whatever suits depending on preference and screen size. Very easy to use and feels perfectly natural within minutes.

Easy toggles for recentering and pausing. I find pausing necessary when docked and using the mouse for selection as the mouse pointer isn't always over what is actually selected otherwise.

I was wondering why it took you so long to get a TrackIR too. :D

Lovely init?

Ps. Voice Attack is a perfet way to both toggle TrackIR on and off (for station menu for example) and to reset view. I can't imagine playing ED without both now.

ok just tried the voice attack and there is a problem ,,,,, had to get out of the game to program another 15 commands in :)

this is GREAT have some rep

Actually waiting for it ( already bought 2 days ago, so it's coming today i think). And after reading all these good comments here, i can't wait to test it. Hope it will be worth the wait! :)

Mine's the $25 "Ed Tracker", but yeah... hard to live without head tracking of some description once you've had a taste of it. It's like trying to play while looking through a square tube.

I've got thousands of hours in flight sims. Honestly ED isn't the best game to showcase TrackIR, since your character is bolted into the seat and you don't get all 6 axis views*. How sweet would it be to have foot windows like on helicopters so's you can see through the floor to your landing pad? And then use tracking to accurately see that? We could dump that goofy landing radar in a heartbeep.

Try something like FSX, IL-2, DCS, or especially Rise Of Flight and really get some use of of your TrackIR! I also like it for driving games as well. But hey, ED with TrackIR beats ED without it any time any place any how.

*Technically... you do get all six, but the Z-axis is very, very short. A shame in a minor key.

Have they fixed the head translation to match Oculus yet. 6DOF with TrackIR only lets you move your head about 6 inches in any direction as if it is on a track. While rift lets you lean over and sideways by a foot or more and look everywhere like your not strapped in.

I am using EDtracker at the moment instead of TrackIR for this game it works better in a lit room and uses less resources and no need for a camera. In War Thunder 6DOF is better because you can lean against the glass canopy and look down the side of the fuselage below the wing or back behind your tail or lean forward to zoom. But in ED half the functionality is practically missing.

Got my Track IR since Friday and It's a very good surprise, simply awesome. I had already test FacetrackNoir and it didn't work well. But with Track IR 5, it just soooooooo smoooooooth! I can't see myself playing without it now. Well This a MUST HAVE PEOPLE!

I used to use facetracknoir and a ps3eye for flight sims it was a little slow and glitchy, but then got a trackir5 and it works fantastic.

Heard occulus is getting pushed back to 2016

Yeah, as many have said, facetracknoir is good for getting a feel for headtracking, but if you want to do it properly you need an EDTracker or trackIR. I can't play E: D anymore without head tracking.

Not saying Trackir isn't nifty but if you're going to spend that...why not spend a little more and get an Occulus Rift and get the completely immersive experience? Ehh...ehhh?
That is exactly the reason why I haven't bought a TrackIR yet. With the Occulus Rift being rumoured to get a retail release around November, I'm forcing myself to hold off.

Yeah, rift rift rift. Change your 144Hz 1ms 1440p G-Sync to a 720p smudge with refresh rates from the last century.
Development Kit 2 moved up to 1080p screens and fixed most of the latency and refresh rate issues, and Retail is going to be at least 1440p and even faster. Plus, you know, actual 3D and far greater immersion than you can get from TrackIR.

How did this turn into a head tracking vs head mounted display argument?

Each approach has it's advantages over the other in terms of playing games, no need to debate which is better.

Because there is a bit of cross-over between the two, and they aren't too far apart in price range. But yes, there are definite advantages to both (eg trackIR can still work on older games, the Rift requires games to be programmed for it).
