Release Trade Computer Extension Mk.II

Hi Eventure

This situation may have been discussed before but I am very surprised at the effect TCE is having on my framerate and wondered if other people are experiencing similar.

Without TCE running at all my PC easily manages to keep 60 frames per second with Elite Dangerous Horizons in ALL situations as measured by MSI Afterburner with RivaTuner. I lock Elite to a maximum 60 fps and I know it would run higher fps if I let it due to my PC specs.

With TCE running my framerate in all areas of Elite drops to between 20 and 30 fps. I have never seen it go above 30 fps which it manages to attain when flying between star systems in witch space and down to around 20-25 fps when in supercruise within a system. When docked at a planetary station it keeps a steady 25 fps, no higher and no lower. Closing TCE while running Elite, my framerate goes back up to 60 fps no problems.

So I am somewhat surprised TCE drops my framerate by at least half and sometimes by two-thirds. Even when docked in a station with TCE not doing anything as far as I know, I only get 25 fps, no more.

Now I have a new and pretty high spec PC I built myself and I run Elite with all settings on Ultra with EDFX and ReShader graphics enhancements. I don't run other programs when Elite is running.

My Specs: Win7, Ryzen 7 1700 cpu, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1080ti.

So I am really very surprised TCE drops my framerate by so much. I can understand it uses a fair bit of cpu but I don't understand why it should drop the framerate so much with a GTX 1080ti which is a very powerful graphics card that barely gets warm when running Elite. Yes, I do think I have a large TCE database, with the DB folder of TCE clocking in at 800 MB and it does take quite a few minutes to load initially(!) but I don't see why that would cause a big framerate hit when simply docked at a station with no perceived TCE activity. Of course I am guessing here. When I am using TCE to find trade routes or best cargoes, it always reacts extremely quickly and is never sluggish there, but it can get a little bit behind with its "fly-in" messages if I dock, reload and exit a station very quickly without pausing.

Do you have any ideas or suggestions as to what may be going on with the big framerate hit? I would also be very interested to hear what other users are experiencing. If you would like further information, please let me know.

Thanks, Rob

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

TCE still starts successfully when I press "Launch" on a restrart, it just aborts if I try to do the EDDB Relay update.

Sending you the files via PM, Rob

With Regards to your FPS issue, I don't have any problems. My Specs are:

Intel Core i7-6700K @ 4 GHz
MSI Z170A Gaming PRO Motherboard
Corsair CMK16GX4M4C3200C 16R Vengeance LPX 16 GB (4 x 4 GB) DDR4 3200 MHz C 16 XMP
MSI GeForce GTX 1080 SEA HAWK (Not overclocked)
Crucial CT250MX200SSD4 M.2 Type 2280SS MX200 250 GB - OS Windows 10 Installed here
Crucial CT512MX100SSD1 512GB MX100 SATA - TCE installed here
3 Monitor setup
Main Game Monitor is: AOC G2460FQ 24" Widescreen 144Hz 1ms Gaming LED Monitor
2 Other Monitors: AOC 24 inch LED Monitor

I also have running all the time all of the following
ED Game (of course)
TCE
EDDiscovery
EDMC
EDEnginner
ScreenShot Changer
EDDI
Voice Attack
Chrome with 10+ tabs open
OpenOffice Spread Sheet with 10+ tabs
Notepad ++ with 5 tabs
Tobii Eye Tracker 4C
NVidia Shadow Play set to record 10 minutes
And either Music being played or one of the following - NetFlix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video etc.

And my FPS is always >100, average 120, I haven't set it to fixed
MY Graphics settings are set to ULTRA.

Plus last week I was coping all my music CD's to Google Play Music, so I was ripping CD's and Uploading them and again I saw no significant hit with FPS. I did expect to see some issues, so I had my FPS showing all the time just to check and as stated no significant hit to my FPS, I had a few drops to around 80 FPS when starting the rip and finishing but that's all.

I do also experience your messaging lag when entering a system and SC to a very near station and TCE still updating, but that doesn't adversely affect my game play.

I'm not being an Intel Fanboy. But maybe it's your Ryzen causing the problems? I used to have an i5 with all of the above specs being the same and I saw significant issues with ED FPS dropping significantly. But when I upgraded to the i7 that all disappeared.

My db is just under 100 MB, I have 2754 registered stations, how many do you have? Here's my numbers.

OK, there is an error with Registered Markets and Outfitting but it appears there may also be a problem with EDDB this morning as I cannot connect to it at the moment through any browser.

Still verifying .........

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

Yeah I think the servers are down as EDDB website isn't accessible, so performing an update isn't working probably because of that, and possibly the nightly update for TCE EDDB Relay failed or got corrupted.

OK, there is an error with Registered Markets and Outfitting but it appears there may also be a problem with EDDB this morning as I cannot connect to it at the moment through any browser.

Still verifying .........

Also I often see "Registered Markets and Outfitting" error when verifying. I think I need to send my db to Eventure next time rather than fix it as something is causing something to go wrong almost daily.

My db is just under 100 MB, I have 2754 registered stations, how many do you have? Here's my numbers.

As I said in a previous post my TCE DB is 800 MB as I started with a very big initial trade range thinking my cpu could handle it. I have 57,968(!) registered stations.

7RADDDC.png

Even after repairing the DB I am still getting an unhandled exception when I try to update through EDDB and I can now connect to EDDB.io

My Ryzen 7 1700 is supposed to be roughly equivalent to an Intel i7-7700 and has 8 cores, 16 threads as opposed to the Intel's 4 cores, 8 threads. Supposedly the Ryzen is slightly faster or equivalent for multi-thread processing but slightly slower for single thread processing.

Ah, so you created the largest sized initial starter db.

Even after repairing the DB I am still getting an unhandled exception when I try to update through EDDB and I can now connect to EDDB.io

Yes, as I said above it'll most likely be corrupted so will have to wait until tomorrow for it to be updated overnight, or wait for Eventure to fix it, but it's nothing you can do at this end, and nothing to do with your db.

So it's probably the size of the db then. I'll create a starter one (as a test) with ALL stations and see if I suffer the same FPS issue.

WHICH I CAN'T DO: Due to EDDB Relay problem.

Thanks, Rob

It is very important to have activated the aero mode under windows 7 in case of FPS drops.
Your 800 MB's database folder comes mainly from the TCE_Outfitting.db, which will be reduced by 80% in size with the next release.

Me again!

When updating EDDB Relay this morning I get the following unhandled exception and have to close TCE;

TCE still starts successfully when I press "Launch" on a restrart, it just aborts if I try to do the EDDB Relay update.

Fixing the error with the next release, comes from the offline state of EDDB, when my file mirror tried to make a download of the files, which weren't present.
Because EDDB is back again, I forced a new update of my server and all should now be working again with the EDDB-Relay.

I strongly recommend to decrease the Trade Range below 100 LY's with such a number of registered markets. You have strong PC specs.,
but TCE is currently designed to make use of 8 parallel thread's on different occasions, but it should be not too difficult to expand it to 16 threads.

Yes, I checked aero is enabled and the potential size reduction of 80% sounds really good.

Yes, my trade range is normally set to less than 100 LY.

Thanks for all your input. Am still surprised my fps drops so much with TCE. Will be interested to see what happens when bAdbUd creates his large test TCE DB from EDDB Relay now it is working again.

I have no fps drop when using 65k registered markets (on Win10).
This is not a TCE problem, AFAIK, it is a Windows bug with transparent forms and should be normally fixed with Aero Mode active.
Either Win 10 handles transparent forms differently, because there is no longer an option for the Aero Mode, or it was already fixed in the build.
I can't do anything in this case, because it's out of my range.

Hello all,
Just been doing some of those station rescue senarios, and come across a discrepency over the counting of last session and current session.
It's my understanding from the branches under each session that the total should equal the sum of all direct underlying branches, but mine doesn't even match the first branch under not alone the rest.
Think it's worth a look.

I've done full restarts of the computer, verified VB, etc. I go to Settings, then start the Auto Detect Process. I'm in Borderless for ED Horizons. Step 1, fine. Step 2, fine. Step 3, hit OK, and up pops the error message above.

Easy fix? Thanks!

OK, I understand. I had to do quite a few tricks to get Win 7 installed on my Ryzen cpu as Ryzen is officially not supported under Win 7 and updates are a problem. Maybe that has something to do with the fps issue. Didn't want to go to Win 10 as my other 2 desktop PCs are both on Win 7 and I do not like Win 10 at all - Win 10 is on my laptop and I don't like it! Full db installed, and appart from TCE taking a lot longer to start, I don't see any FPS loss, at stations on planetary stations, sorry. So it looks like your Win 7 installation along with the Ryzen CPU is your problem. I do however get my main game screen going black when TCE is updating, or when I open/close panels and TCE is much more unresponsive (slower) than with my own db. Which is quite frustrating, but that may be down to the OUTFITTING db having 10+million records, but that's going to change in the next update.

I however was like you and didn't want to move to Win 10 from Win 7, so I first installed it on to my laptop for a while and got used to it then I installed it on my desktop. It's not as bad as some people make it out to be though. It's nowhere near as bad as Win 8 or 8.1, they are diabolical, but Vista and Win Millenium where 10 times worse.

Yeah, I am sure it has something to do with Win 7 and Ryzen, which is not officially supported by Microsoft. I just ran an mp4 video file with a video player with TCE running but no ED, so TCE was not doing anything. Sure enough the framerate on the mp4 video was 30 fps and >100 fps when TCE was closed. So clearly Ryzen and Win 7 do not like each other as TCE was using 0 cpu cycles according to task manager when running the mp4 file. I am going to have to bite the bullet with Win 10 or accept poor framerates. Am trying to think of a way to dual boot the pc but think I will just take a system image (so I can go back if necessary) and then install Win 10. I have an SSD so there is limited space to dual boot although I am quite tempted to try it. It looks like a long weekend coming up [big grin]

Thanks for your input on the large TCE DB, bAdbUd. Both you and Eventure have now confirmed a large TCE DB does not cause framerate loss under Win10. And yes, I agree the vary large DB does take a long time to load and can be sluggish at times. Rob

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

I'll keep skimming to see if this has been dealt with here already, but just in case it's new I figured I'd post it.

I've done full restarts of the computer, verified VB, etc. I go to Settings, then start the Auto Detect Process. I'm in Borderless for ED Horizons. Step 1, fine. Step 2, fine. Step 3, hit OK, and up pops the error message above.

Easy fix? Thanks!

-Adam

Hi Adam,

did you closed Elite Dangerous before hitting the OK button?
Will add a fix for it with the next release.

Hit the OK button before closing ED should fix it for the moment.

Hi Eventure,

Just tried launching 1.6.6.6 and got the following error after clicking Login on the Splash Screen:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

I downloaded and installed 1.6.6.8 and upon launching and clicking login had exactly the same issue.
