Travel Methods

Sadly not all are Ace Pilots like you people, some of us, use to be, until age caught up to us.
So once again, options are the best way to go.
OR maybe I could just buy a NPC Robot that would do all the manual stuff for me,
I would name him Robbie, Data, or get a her named Rosie.
ace pilots - not at all - but with smaller ships one can dare to boost into the station, because they are nimble and roll quickly and there is plenty of space in the slot, one doesn't have to be perfectly aligned to get through it. Wouldn't do that with a large ship though.

Why don’t you just watch something while doing the repetitive jump-honk-scoop loop? It’s not the game’s job to entertain you.
Actually... it is. A game is an entertainment product, thus its purpose is entertainment.
It is already a bit of a sad state that other/additional entertainment is suggested to complement the game.

Admit it, you just want fast travel. Fast travel is the Devil because space is big.
Fast travel so some places one has visited before? Why not!
Do the trip once, after that you could book a ticket for someone to fly you there.
We are doing missions for NPCs. Why not get the NPCs to do something for us?

You are in VR and have even more immersion than those without. How come you are the one suggesting to watch something while we do the mindless game loop of travel?
Everyone would love to be immersed, VR or not. Yet here we are, discussing how to fill the other 75% of our time, while we are playing an entertainment product to keep us entertained.
Looking at other games, I don't see anywhere else the need to fill "void time" with watching something because the game captivates to a level where it has my undivided attention. Skyrim. Got plenty to do, no time to watch stuff. Valheim. Quiet and relaxing, smelting is boring as, but during combat or exploring, I don't have time to avert my eyes, else it's game over very quickly.

I love mining for example. As dull as it is, just shooting rocks, wait for things to be scooped up and then move to the next rock & repeat, it is relaxing - yet at the same time I'm watching stuff, because mining doesn't really require much attention.
Travelling to and from Colonia or SagA* (done both trips twice, still no idea why) was the worst Idea I've ever had. Yes, I found an undiscovered ELW on the way, put my name on it, but the radio button simulator is even worse. Some people love it, some people hate it. Out of exploration, I love the space golf bit.

ED has a big variety on things, but one thing we all can agree: Some game loops could be improved.

Well, when Odyssey comes out, and we can walk around our ship, will you have to stop traveling
every time you want to get up ? No Way !!
I want Auto Pilot to take care of the mundane Travel chore, While I go to the Info Station,
where I can get most any Info I need, from Codex to Mapping, and a In Game Browser that
will allow me to setup Bookmarks and connect to Inara, Eddb, or any other site I want, IN GAME.
That way I can use the Travel Time, doing what ever I want or need, while traveling.
Even a Babysitter brings a book, or Video to the job.
Let Us use our Time in the Game, in a useful way.
If I could Browse the Net from inside my Ship, I might never Log out.....

this is unfortunately very problematic - Second Life has it integrated - it's using the old webkit from google for it. Problem is though, that neither your anti-virus can take care of malicious sites nor does this webkit get any updates - so using it is coming with a risk - and afaik there is no other webkit like this.

Couldn't they do a Window in a Window kind of thing, where we can stick our Browser ?
Or maybe a split screen, with the Game running on one side and the Browser on the other,
allowing to minimize one or the other, and just flip back and forth as needed.

Even if they didn't implement any new in-game productivity tools, being able to at least alt+tab out of the game while we wait to get where we're going would be far preferable to what we have now. It would be nice to have more in-ship stuff to do while we travel, but I'd be satisfied with just being able to use that travel time for something more intellectually stimulating.

Totally agree.
While we all agree that the travel part is an integral part of any space sim, I think it should be kept within limits. What is the point of making players stare at a screen for 45 or even 90 minutes to watch the stars fly past?
I know some people call it a "rite of passage" to fly to Hutton and do nothing for 90 minutes, I call it a waste of time. In 90 minutes I can fill my cutter with 576t of platinum. Or I can amass a fair bit of bounty for the current CG.
So I reckon the big question is: What is an acceptable travel time to make a player idle? 2 mins? 5 mins? 10 mins?

The thing about travel time is that's what it is that makes the galaxy feel truly big. It should absolutely take a long time to get to far away places so it still feels like an accomplishment to get there. If your goal is exploring the galaxy, then travel time is the cost of doing that. That's why I stay away from arguing about how long it takes and just focus on how much inane repetition is required to do it. It should be about how much time you invest, not how much manual effort you put in.

You're preaching to the choir mate lol. My entire post was a sarcastic recounting of the usual responses given to forumites who dare make a suggestion for improving travel in ED.

It's been my experience that sarcasm never makes anything better, and usually makes things worse. I like to just stick with straight up directness so there's no confusion and less chance of my offensiveness derailing the conversation.

This is demonstrably and objectively untrue though. For example, I felt better after writing it, and people who appreciate sarcasm and are tired of those Pavlovian responses may also get a kick out of it.

Moreover, it was a fairly accurate bullet-point short-list of the opposing arguments, which is a useful reference to have, and such references improve overall knowledge of the discussion.

In truth, it was a benign and lighthearted post designed to bolster the morale of the commander throwing themselves into this fray and coming under fire from multiple directions, which if taken the right way could also make things better. :)

Yes and no about what makes a galaxy big. It depends what you fill it with.
Making a journey tedious is not the same as making it interesting.

Why not add the ability to navigate wormholes or wormhole like structures?
You engage the FSD, you enter the witch space, and now you have to navigate. Like a witch space mini-game.
The better you do, the further you get to your destination. I would make this to have a 500ly minimum jump range, max 1000. If you fail your navigation, you are expelled from witch space, just like crashing into a star (which is basically what you just did) except you'd take more damage.

I think I missed the sarcasm in your post. :(

I was going to argue against your point of view, but if I'm honest I've been trying really hard to keep the conversation on topic, so I'll let it go. A side debate on sarcasm hardly advances the conversation about travel methods.

Well, as I've stated, I'm not against different ways of moving around. The whole point is to hear cool ideas like wormholes. I just think it's easier to make the argument for less repetitiveness than a reduction in travel time, so I try to keep the attention focused on method of travel rather than how long it takes. It's easier to say it's ridiculous to keep mindlessly repeating the same set of tasks over and over than to say it shouldn't take as long to get places.

I just have to say this game launched in 2014, is on multiple platforms, and players have explored just 0.003% of the Milky Way galaxy to date.

So basically we'll all be dead before even 1% of the game map is traveled on by players. Assuming, you know, this game remains on the market for an unprecedented number of years. And we don't need travel improvements? Really!?

Is the goal 100% exploration? I wasn't aware that was what we were going for. What do we do after that? I'm already able to get from one side of the galaxy to the other in a couple of days if I focus solely on getting to my destination. That doesn't seem very unreasonable to me.

Some of us aim to see as much of the galaxy as we can. Having done a trip to Evelyn's Light, Colonia (twice) and Sag A*, I've also puddled around the 'East' and 'South' regions and I'm now in my way to Beagle Point via the 'Western' rim. I don't think we'll ever see 100% of the galaxy explored, but I'm going to do my best to reach 1%.

i read lately it is about 0.05% now and 32 or 35 million systems visited, not sure about the latter.

I definitely want us to explore as much as possible. My first love is space exploration and I want to see as many cool things as possible. But my goal isn't to see everything, because once you've seen everything, what do you have left to look forward to? For me, part the joy is seeing awesome things, and part of it is the anticipation of finding awesome things. I like that there are long stretches in between, because it makes finding something new all the sweeter. If I'm finding things around every corner, the joy of the find is diminished. That's my take on it, at least.

I admire your enthusiasm about the matter - to me the galaxy is far more uniform, meaning regardless where I go it's more of the same. Like with a freshly shaken snow globe. so I really hope for Odyssey bringing some interesting places to the galaxy - maybe not immediately, but over time - visiting atmospheric worlds will most likely be more interesting than all those barren rocks out there.
