Tried HTC VIVE first time - GODDAMN, I need better computer

Got a HTC VIVE before I got a new computer and well, it is playable but with an AMD 460 and old Core2Quad quadcore computer im VERY limited with visuals.

But the IMMERSION blow me away regardless of visible pixels.

A few things I do wonder that I could not find:

- Any way to increase the sensitivity of the headset a bit, im literally hurting my neck swiveling between viewscreens unlike the small head nods with the Track-Ir.

- Also, galaxy maps and writing system names for travel is a PITA since the game REALLY could need a virtual keyboard or SOMETHING since you would need to use the (now) invisible keyboard.

The main bottleneck I seem to see among users is the graphic card since if we want any sharpness in visuals it's supersampling and that eats resources like a hungry kitten wallowing in food.

Not that I know of. A little movement while playing pc games is not bad, is it? I also think, not having a 1:1 ratio on head movement in vr would mess with your brain pretty hard.

You can use bookmarks atm, since there is no virtual keyboard. It also helps binding you controller to the gal map controls.

I have an overclocked 980Ti and I went down to native resolution, since even 1.25x SS with everthing else on low would drop the framerate below 90Fps on planets and in RES during combat. Ice rings also made me turn down details to a mix between low and mid. This game is extremely demanding on the GPU in times. Therefore I would recommend going for a GTX 1070 at least, but nVidias pricing keeps me from recommending anything above it.

Well, im planning on splurging for a custom made water cooled monster so it should be better.

The question is, can we utilize MULTIPLE cards /crossfire to share the load between the cards.

Controllers are fine (at least HOTAS) but added functionality would be nice.

You should see it on the Rift. There's no weird scaling issues there. I can scarcely imagine how people play without VR.

I'm using a two-year-old TITAN X (I actually have 3, but SLI doesn't mix well with VR at the moment). It works well on it's own, but I can't quite crank the SS up to max without getting some stuttering. 1.25x seems pretty stable right now. The improvements to VR when 2.2 dropped helped quite a bit, so hopefully there's still some optimization to be had on FDev's end.

If you really want to be awed by VR, fly to the nearest RES and take in the view. It's astonishing.

I've got a 2 year old Alienware laptop doing 30 fps. Can't even imagine 90.

90FPS is pretty much mandatory for VR. Depending on how sensitive you are, you feel like your brain is melting sooner or later if you don't hit 90FPS. The game engine scales pretty well (at least in non-VR mode) with lower quality settings. Even in non-VR mode the game engine has very bad frame timing, which becomes more appearent the lower the FPS are. I could not imagine playing the game wiht just 30FPS. As a friendly advice, maybe next time you should not buy an overpriced Alienware device.

As others have said; VR has to scale 1:1 or things start to get really weird I think (consider it exercise). Bookmarks are your friend (also turn on the grid).

I've got an Asus 1080 for my Vive, but would also concede that a 1070 is probably better value. Depending on where you fly, settings/performance differs. Flying close to rocks in a busy RES will choke any card out today.

I think next gen HMD and GFX will be heart stopping. Wireless and with a better resolution.

Oh, and congrats! :)

My wallet is not congratulating me one bit.

One fun fact i did NOT know was that the system map is actually in 3d

I mean, why cannot we have that view in regular gameplay?

AFAIK we cannot spin/twist the system view in regular game.

You wot?

Oh that just frustrates me no end.

Well, it is around 50% of my monthly salary after taxes are paid so it's not that different.

It's about the price of my home's mortgage and my car's repayment combined. xD
So not financially viable right now, but I would LOVE to experience ED in that kind of detail.

And now you say there's a 3D SysMap what us plebs don't get!? *cries into a bucket*

Is there a video somewhere? ME WANTS for regular play!

And I'll just pretend motion sickness is the reason I am not getting VR equipment rather than admitting that the wife would kill me :p

Yup, I could tilt the map - was slightly disorienting to move.

About 2.55 in you can see the map is slightly more 3D but he only pans the view, not much tilting.

Well, you should have checked before spend so much money on a vr kit if your system was even capable of play vr games [wacky]

Btw, to fix your problem of the keyboard ( i can picture you removing costantly the glasses for every keyboard interaction haha [haha] ) is VoiceAttack. 10 bucks, mandatory VR lifechanger
No more keyboard :)

Well, I already knew i would get a VR set sooner or later and regular VR games is not a problem, resource intensive ones are.

I have voice attack but how do you set it up to handle commands involving writing?

AFAIK you can set up a macro so that voice attack activates the comms and types in some stuff and bind that to the voice command. But I never did anything that advanced with it I'm afraid. Congrats on the Vive though :)

There are none on my Vive and I've played on the Rift and Vive with the right settings, to be fair to both.

Apparently we can.

NATO alphabet spelling into text box.

Now I know what I need for Elite to get it perfect.

That's helpful.

On the subject of VR I showed my Vive to a few friends and one of them was very "tough guy", "jack the lad" about it kind of thing, thinking I was over playing how good the Vive is. I put on the Whale in The Blu for him as his first go and after about 15 seconds he said "I have to stop, I need to come out" and took of the headset.

He hadn't prepared himself for how immersive it would be and was taken back by it and freaked out by the water.

I have twisted and turned my head w/o problems, but it can be a lil tricky to maintain the head still for the panel to operate on. You can use the ui focus binds to lock the screen into place though, just remeber that you have to explicitly dismiss it then. Also, maybe try swivel chair?
