Tried HTC VIVE first time - GODDAMN, I need better computer

An other important tool is onscreen keyboard
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10762/windows-use-on-screen-keyboard

The nato stuff is cool but ye.

Anyway if you (patiently) program voice attack more or less like that guy did with the nato spelling, you can program each letter wiht your voice one by one and then clicking on search you would be able to order the system by voice.
On screen keyboard is better obiouvsly. ;)

Don't forget to buy the ASTRA voice pack :p
http://www.hcsvoicepacks.com/collections/voice-packs/products/astra

She will be able to handle most of your travels in-bubble (more or less) and voice dictation!

Have fun with your VR experience o7

TBH I rarely need to type system or starport name into the box. Mostly I get "open in galaxy map" button somewhere in the UI. I can touch-type though so perhaps this process is transparent for me. The only one small issue remaining when you touch-type is finding the keyboard if I had put it aside and properly aligning hands on it. Something like microsoft natural keyboard would probably do the trick best (seriously, it was the best keyboard I was typing on, and that's from 15+ years :) I hope that with advancements in vive tracking we will get some "beacons" that can be stuck to objects or pets (smaller than the currently proposed "pucks", ideally button size), so they can be tracked in vr somehow.

Oh, before I forget, you can enjoy Oculus grade visual quality on Vive, though at a performance hit price. Be warned though. Once you see how sweet it can look, there is NO going back. Really. Makes that world of difference. So spoiler tag to avoid temptation :p

set a voice attack command to press ctrl-v
you can use this to paste any text you've already copied into the galaxy map

Also if you wanna move your head less you can move your head forward and reset your VR origin. When you sit back naturally the screens will now be slightly forwards and easier to turn to.
I do the opposite of this trick as I'm more concerned about eyestrain than neckstrain.

The system map has always been in 3D... if you scroll sideways on big planets or the star, you can see they're round, not flat (apart from the asteroid belts).

To move more quickly in the system maps - zoom out. The scroll speed stays the same regardless of zoom but you'll move faster when zoomed out.
I use my throttle buttons for pan forward/back/left/right/up/down, and mouse wheel for zoom in/out. Works a treat.

Got a HTC VIVE before I got a new computer and well, it is playable but with an AMD 460 and old Core2Quad quadcore computer im VERY limited with visuals.

But the IMMERSION blow me away regardless of visible pixels.

A few things I do wonder that I could not find:

- Any way to increase the sensitivity of the headset a bit, im literally hurting my neck swiveling between viewscreens unlike the small head nods with the Track-Ir.

- Also, galaxy maps and writing system names for travel is a PITA since the game REALLY could need a virtual keyboard or SOMETHING since you would need to use the (now) invisible keyboard.

The main bottleneck I seem to see among users is the graphic card since if we want any sharpness in visuals it's supersampling and that eats resources like a hungry kitten wallowing in food.

Congrats on getting a Vive. I love mine. ;)

Some general helpful advice:

1) Learn how to Touch Type. IMO, it's a skill anyone who uses a computer should learn, and translates well into VR. Once your fingers find the F and J keys (most keyboards should have bumps on them, so you can find them by feel), you can type away like normal, even in VR. This is a lot faster than hunting and pecking using an onscreen keyboard (once they become available in VR), or Sierra Papa Echo Lima Lima India November Golf via Voice Attack.

2) The galaxy and system maps are 3D. Your mouse is 2D. Using a 2D device in 3D space doesn't translate very well. Go into settings, and bind some of your chosen controllers' axis to operate these maps. It takes a bit of practice, like all new control schemes, but soon you'll be zipping around these maps like a pro.

3) Always zoom out in the system map before panning across it.

This.

It took me a few days but I'm very good in the system map now, it's easy once you get the hang of it and I'm set up so it almost feels like I'm flying through the galaxy. Love VR.
