trying out piracy - its actually tough to catch stuff

so when i interdict some1. they can just run away faster than i can catch them.

i purposly got a fast ship with 400+ boost speed but im still having trouble.

any tips/help?

Point your ship at the vessel you're trying to catch.

In seriousness, the common tactic for surviving interdiction is to enter at 0 speed, turn around, and boost past the person who interdicted you. Be prepared for that move.

usualyl they just boost forward it dont matter i dont catch them anyway.

before i used to state demands when i landed.

now i think its better to attack the drives outright so they cant get away.

is it better to attack drives or the fsd?

also what affects intediction range? at times my range is 100L's+ other times less than 0.3 L's

ps i dont intend to kill them. that would be costly for me. i just want some of ther stuff

Target smaller trade ships, like haulers and type or 7.
You shold be faster than them. The tougher targets require the firepower/mass of a wing to catch.

You need
a) a ship that has good enough mass lock to deal with t6, t7 and hopefully t9
b) a ship that is fast enough to keep up with them
c) some gimbals to target cargo hatch
d) maybe some limpets
e) weapons good enough to QUICKLY kill their shields and then shoot at cargo hatch
f) really fast fingers or some kind of script with "Stop at once!" typing into local chat

That's it. You interdict, shoot them until they stop and then get cargo out. Then scoop it.

ty for that.

so viper wont cut it?

You need about 50 mil for an asp to pirate effectively. Hatch brekers are useless. Rails to take out drives but always message your target before hand. Hatch breakers are useless tbh.

If I was some trader getting interdicted by a viper I would assume it's a griefer since the viper doesn't have squat for a cargo hold. Grab a cobra if this is really what you want to do.

I agree, a Cobra would be a good starting pirate vessel. You can A frame everything for 5 mil + and still have power to spare. The cargo hold is limited compared to an ASP, but as the way it is with scooping cargo it won't matter too much if you stay close to a black market station. Now when 1.3 releases with the other unknown changes and the addition of collection drones you'll probably want to upgrade to and ASP asap. I imagine pirating is going to get a nice little boost to make it something financially worthwhile and hopefully the modules needed vs. not needed will be a bit more clear.

Hatch breakers are useless tbh.

can u expand on this pls? why are they useless?

edit - omg im gonna get labelled a griefer.. i tried to pirate an adder but its died like so fast. armor like tissue paper omg i feel bad

Most cargo players stick a point defense on that shoots down hatch breakers. They're slow so won't catch a ship that's running away. Once you shoot a ships drives out it spins uncontrollably and continues at it's last speed making it too hard to fire at the ship without the ship rotating and crushing the breaker.

Best course of action is to ask the player to stop and submit to a cargo scan. If they don't, shoot their drives out then scan them. If they have no cargo or poor cargo let them go. If they have decent cargo ask them to drop as abandoned. If they run or fight you kill them.

It's not really possible to pirate npcs as they have bad low quality cargo and there's no way to negotiate.

If you want to be a proper pirate, don't pay off your fines or bounties. Embrace the profession rather than taking the easy option. Until fd fix the crime and punishment system it's too easy to game the system.

The ideal pirate ship seems to be the Clipper. Fast and can masslock lots. At the cheaper end the Cobra, as has been mentioned. If you need a slower but heavier ship then perhaps team up with someone with a faster but lighter one so you can masslock them while they go after them (and a big ship and several smaller ones has always seemed the iconic Elite pirate group). Maybe even just a Viper and a friend prepared to show up in a Hauler for the cargo if you're only going after smaller ships.
