Type 9 Heavy that doesn't run from pirates possible?

Robigo passenger missions do not build trader rank which is one of my goals and the reason I'm trying to match 80 million per hour trading is because that's what I can make out of Robigo. Also killing pirates while trading adds to my combat rank which also does not happen with Robigo.

No? I think Robigo counts to both. Or used to?
I remember hitting Elite in Trading and Exploration within days from eachother by doing Robigo on my XB account. It was January 2019 IIRC

Right so shock cannons..

The good: crazy high DPS. A T9 fitted with all SCs can pull 444 DPS.
Its basically a multi cannon on Cra... erm... Onionhead so no spread like a frag cannon

The bad: ridiculously low ammo count. 300 rounds. Not suitable for prolonged engagements but for the occasional ambush its good.
It's an experimental module so no engineering.
That also means you have to unlock each size.
I'm currently in the process of unlocking them myself so take what I say with a grain of salt.
I had a read about them and it looks like heat needs managing. I'll have to give them a try to since I mostly fight with multi-cannons anyway and like them.

It does count a little to Exploration rank, but never noticed a trade rank increase. On a PC. Meeting the 'must have traded with 50 markets' requirement for one of the engineers put me on Tycoon trade rank. I wasn't focusing on trade rank, it just came that way. Lots of credits made too.

The catalyst for me trading seriously in the first place is, somewhere on the way to accessing the engineer that can do G5 shield engineering on my Krait Phantom exploration ship to protect it from high G planet crash landings, I had to get the number of markets I traded with up to 50 from just 14. I might as well profit from it as much as possible and have fun with trading while I do it, and so the Anaconda was purchased....

I lost the Phantom once forgetting I was landing on a planet instead of small moon and the stock 4D shields were not enough.
After a bit of luck and digging around someone showed me a shield design I would not have thought of:
5D shields G5 enhanced low power with lo draw - reduces power consumption, increases shield strength and reduces weight to 4.04T just 0.04T heavier than the old 4D shield. Then add 3 x 0E shield boosters all with Heavy Duty G5 plus super capacitors.
662MJ shields running off a 3A low emissions G1 plus thermal spread power plant.
I deliberately flew at the surface of the 6G planet in the bubble as if approaching a low G moon, hit the planet, skimmed along the ground stripping away the shields and scraping the hull down to 35% (light alloy hull G5 heavy duty + deep plate 462 strength) before pulling back up into space. On board repair limpets fixed the damage.

I'm curious about what could be done with Prismatic shields in a smaller internal slot. I'll check it out in Coriolis 😀
Best I can get with Prismatic shields is a 3A enhanced low power G5 low draw which compared to my current set up with regular 5D shields is almost 1T heavier, uses more power forcing the use of a heavier or less efficient power plant and produces marginally less protection at 662MJ. It does free up the class 5 internal slot on the Phantom but I don't need it on this exploration ship.
What this does show is that prismatic shields are perfect for cargo transport ships that want as much cargo capacity as possible while still having good defenses. One day I will have this shield type on a Cutter for sure.

I thought it was a typo and then I saw your screen name. There's no vowel after the consonant in your surname you ! Run back to whatever blasted desert or tundra or underwater swamp you came from with the rest of you vowel-less s!

Good day Mr. Marlin!

It is true that prismatics are best on freighters. I had lots because that's what I play but I even wanted to swap them out on my combat ships. They're too heavy and too slow. Freighter is their best match.

I don't think it's possible to match passenger with trading. I think 40m/hr or around there was the best I ever did.

Quain Marln is an entirely fictitious name I originally invented in 1985 for a dungeons and dragons character. Rest assured the spelling of Marln is correct and intentional 😉

The Imperial Clipper finally makes sense to me as a ship choice. You put Prismatic shields in the class 4 internal and use the 6 and 7 for cargo racks. Doesn't work for me if the size 6 slot is lost to a regular shield generator.

Yes, indeed. My Clipper is used as a core mining rig using a size 4 Prismatic
Works like a charm, and it can still boost to 600+ with the cargo hold full of goodies (192t).

sounds much like what I did with my ExploraConda, where I repeteadly ran it into the ground on that very same planet, with size 3 Prismatic shield.

Sop half of the stuff on that ship is totally not needed, and half of the other stuff is might be used... but still I loved it. and it got some good jump range for when I was bored out my mind and just wanted to get somehwere (like home).. I am not for being out exploiting for months, I almost had enough before I reached Beagle point.. so I did not do much exploiting on my way back... just jumping and occasionality look if it was an interesting system... but I hit 5 of my 7 targets for the exploration tour, I call that a success.

Misty was here

cool, I have to try these then , I have them unlocked, and I have played around with a frag boat... that was fun.

I'm still in the process of unlocking them myself for the same reason as the OP. I'd like to be able to take down the occasional pve pirate or two. On paper it seems solid and I keep my T9s power plant running cold so hopefully heat wont be too much of an issue. I'll just have to see. It may turn out to be crap and not worth the time though so that's why I say dont take my word for it.

Sad that you cannot no longer fit the class 5 shields on the Cutter... you need Legacy Engineering for that. I do wish we had the option to add special effect for optimum mass on shields to allow everyone to do this. As that would be a choice to the player...

I have class 5 shields that work on the Cutter.. including a Prismatic, so I am very happy, and I just wish that everyone else can enjoy this, if the want to.

The make the most easy sense on Freighters, as most often anyway fit the shield in the smallest slot that you can, and with prismatics, you get more shield at the expense of power draw and weight. and weight on a freighter is often a non issue.

Miners are often i the same category as Freighters, so here they tend to be equally useful.

for combat, now here we have who lot of how do you play, do you play alone? with friends? and if with friends, do you use healing beams? do you like to play with SCB? So in the end, it comes down to personal preference on combat, as there so many factors. and for combat, bi-weave is also a very good option. Now when conflict zones are such limited I just stuck prismatic on my Corvette and I can do 2-3 conflict zones before shields are "gone", and I need to return to re-arm anyway after that, so for me this worked great.

Engineers are still completely broken, so you don't really have anything to whinge about.

I tried numerous builds with a trader T9, but they all were difficult without compromising cargo space. Even if you are managing a fight there will be hatch breaking limpets and you'll be losing cargo. Or if you take cargo missions sometimes there will be a group of pirates and not only one.

T10 can do it much better, but has less cargo space. Eventually i kept a super Cutter trader that is the kind of traders, made my T10 into a deep space miner, and use the T9 shieldless to carry stuff to/from my carrier. Perfect roles for these ships that are really great.. I especially love the T series as they nail the big space freighter look and feel..
