What is with the Merope orrery? Last I looked there were only two planets...What's the link again?
Ta.
Further work on the Murdock Meridian.
It appears that Merope 5c's Tidal Locking has a slight wobble.
Right now Merope 5 is directly overhead at 3.31, -117.44
The overhead point is proceeding towards 15.78 latitude as expected but has veered slightly from the -116.85 longitude recorded last time (about 45 hrs ago).
Due to the longitude variation and for the sake of simplicity I'll redefine the Murdock Meridian as -117 degrees longitude.
Anyway, well done FD. I've had my doubts about the accuracy of the orbital modelling but this is spot on. The behaviour does actually match up with the stated information.
I'd like to just chime in and mention that 'section 3' is just an echo of 'section 2' - I don't think there is anything there.
Welcome to the new Unknown Artifact (or artefact) thread!
The old one reached an event horizon where the forums would no longer cope with it, so we have a lovely new thread for you with plenty of room.

yes it's spelled canonn here, as a nod to Arcanonn who started this...
What about if one of the symbols give us the rotational "direction" of the planet - this would/could lead to at least a reference from what direction the sphere has to be looked at (wow... is that grammaticaly correct - no native speaker).
*coughs* for the direction from which *coughs*
No-one would have picked you up though cause we all know what you mean
I'm not so sure... Why aren't any of the four symbols around the sphere echoed then?
We've got a confirmation on the guy with the UP free floater, he says it was in Elephant's Trunk Sector DL-Y D20. He seems to be pretty certain about what he found, and UA free floaters were originally only appearing in a few systems. In any case, I'm there right now and looking.
Another theory, with pictures and should be fairly easy to position in space:

The above shows the UP clue superimposed over the entire Merope system. I centered the grid on Merope 5, and pointed the line in the bottom right quadrant to line up with the system star. Then I scaled the view down:

I scaled the clue so that the circle matches Merope 5's rings and the top left arc happens to line up with the orbit of the first planet/moon. Coincidence?
So, assuming the symbols in the corners are binary, and they are defining a series of steps, then I have
1) aligned the two stars as step 1.
2) scaled the clue to match a celestial feature, and the top right arc becomes concentric with the first orbit as step 2
then:
3) Look at the 2nd orbit? for step 3.
4) On this side? Which coincides with the intersection of the orbit lines of the Merope 5 star and planet/moon 2. ... step 4
Should be easy to go there and wait for a USS or something?
If no one else does, I will fly to Merope again, and science this myself, next time I get to log on.
Looking into this line of thinking some more. To the right of the symbol we all know, there's more "stuff". I've highlighted the pertinent details:

Now, overlay this on my previous overlay of the clue on Merope 5, do a bit of scaling and rotation, and you get:

More and more, this is not looking like a coincidence. Now, what does the stuff on the left mean?
