Following an "overenthusiastic" landing I cut my little expedition short and returned to civilization. After a brief stop for repairs I headed straight back to the Pleiades to make this little barnacle timelapse video for you all to enjoy...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A9sX5KTFKg

As we can see it does not grow, open or move in any way, and the only thing that it points to is the sky. So hopefully we can finally put those lines of inquiry to rest.

The sound of course is not sped up, I just added a brief barnacle clip to the footage. Sounds good though, and that really does sound like a short morse sequence just after the half way mark!

Hope you like it :)

That's mighty incredible and chilling!

Nice clip have some rep

a word of caution for explorers of strange objects, barnacles, wonders in space or just bugged areas, as this seem to somtimes happen at either

flying in with my ship it suddenly stopped in mid air (i was over 1.5km altitude at the barnacle in this case and still some distance away) and engines shut down. i had landed it said, readings said 0m over ground althou i was suspended in mid "air"

(also i did spot the site on ship radar first, it was a tiny tiny blue circle much smaller than normal POI circles) << EDIT: i doubt this is correct, probably just a POI that was "gone" as i got down on ground.. circle was in same spot as the barnacle however

deployed the srv since im a dare devil, only that i could not dismiss ship while free falling and bec of that i could not use thrusters to soften the impact.... i did survive but i dont recommend this way of exploring :D

however just before i left ship i saw like a bright light above the barnacle site (this was at night)
is that something others seen as well, or was this just yet another bug?

another werid thing just happens as im writing this and just listening to the sounds... seem the spikes are exploding by them selves, one by one they dissapears with a loud cracking sound (leaving nothing to be picked up). im alone here, only human anyway, noone is shooting... anyone noticed this to happen? this didnt happen at the first site i was at

I spent today in Barnard's Loop. Hoping this visibility bug didn't mean I flew right past one..

Docked back at Maia now. I'll head out and try again when I know they'll definitely be visible!
I'm out in Orion and I'm starting to think the same way... There might not be anything here in the first place, and even if there is the bug might keep me from seeing anything (even though I play in open).

Repped!
I'm grateful there's commanders like you out there that take the time to make things like this for the rest of us to enjoy!

nice timelapse, i tried do something similar myself, but it failed utterly (see my post above lol) the spikes explodes by them selves

Aye, I posted a bug report about this. I have some footage of it happening (happened 3 times in total) and I was not able to "take off" again. I was, however, able to deploy the srv without taking any damage at all. I posted some of the other videos earlier, but here is a more recently uploaded one, along with some dialogue from other commanders who were annoyed that I was "In the way" of them trying to read the the wave scanner. (in reality, the other SRVs around were doing that too). It was at the first barnacle site shortly after discovery (in Mobius).

Thing is, it hasn't happened to me since that at any other barnacle sites I've visited, but 3 times in this instance.

Curious, what game mode were you in? My footage was taken in solo, and it is a 26 hour long sequence (so plenty of time for random explosions!)

And many thanks everyone for all the rep, I finally have my second green pip! Must now grab a bottle of Cab Sav to celebrate...

Perhaps we can get the Distant Worlds expeditions to take a look for Barnacles when they're on their travels?

One of the main ways I plan on spending spare time is searching 130-150 ly around nebulas for UAs and looking for barnacles too. Many of our waypoints are at or around nebulas

i was in mobius group, bu i havent seen anyone else nearby. it was a fresh untouched site, i had parked my srv near the center structure, and it was only minutes before evry spike around me started to explode
im having so far a far from bug free experience around barnacle sites so i dont know what to think about anything, or not, anymore :)

Maybe another CMDR in the instance shooting stuffs but for some reason you're not seeing them.

I feel like these should get more attention.

Has anyone realized that the human occupied bubble is right in the center of the "southernmost" blob on the galactic map? I like the idea of this being some sort of galactic map of territories. Perhaps we can get the Distant Worlds expeditions to take a look for Barnacles when they're on their travels?

Map borrowed from https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=116450

Someone had extended Cherenkov Radiation as a possibility. Radio-luminescence does seem like a pretty good reason.

An interesting theory that has one critical question that naturally goes with it.... If that is indeed a map of "their" space.... Why is it finite? Surely someone so advanced to plant flag on almost 60-70% of the galaxy should be able to claim all of it right? What's keeping them from doing that? Also a good followup to that is why is the bubble in there if we have limited evidence of alien activity? This reminds me a bit of NASAs mission logos. They usually feature something about the location of their target.... Let's hope were dealing with another curious inquiring mind..

Naturally if the NASA example holds water then it would stand to reason that we should be looking potentially outside the highlighted area for whoever is sending or seeding this stuff.... Seen an awful lot of Drew lately with more than a passing interest for Thargoid lore.. I wonder where the formidine rift falls in that map.

aye, i was thinking the same actually.. i didnt try go over to solo this time as last time i did that it started a chain reaction of bugs (like couldnt drive srv even after a restart) i almost didnt get away from
them aliens are dangerous! :)

I'm at the crashed anaconda site on Orrere 2B (43.8211 -173.9802). Same Caine-Massey crates here as on the pleiades anaconda crash site. Going to look around if i can find any barnacles near the crash site. Unfortunately its night here...

Yep. Saw you.

Had the same problem too, just lift off slow and proceed slowly. got out of it by jumping to orbital. Might have been my exhaust you saw.

So, just decided to pick up some of the materials that drop if you destroy the spikes before they fully "blossom."

I've just picked up Iron, Nickel, Germanium and Yttrium.

Iron - Has many uses in chemical production. It's also an important element in medical molecular engineering application services.

Nickel - Commonly used in various alloys and also for some bio-chemical processes.

Germanium - Used in optics and for semiconductors in electronics. Semiconductor detectors allow accurate radiological identification, and it is also commonly used in alloys.

Yttrium - Often used as a strengthening component for various alloys. It also has uses in medicines and superconductors.

That's all I've picked up and I'm not sure if this has been listed before. There's definitely a connection between all the materials being used to say the least.

Obviously we know they're making meta-alloys and that these said meta-alloys have cured Obsidian Orbital....

I believe the UA's and Barnacles are linked and made by the same "things." My question now is why do the meta-alloys cure the effects of the Unknown Artefacts?

Also, what pricks my attention is the thing about iron being a useful element in molecular engineering.....

Out here at MX Orionis...

Some darned strange orbits going on here... Anyhow. No joy so far.

Any requests?
