Yep as you can see:
Also curious thing is that a lot of the stars that make up the arrow are from the Greek mythology.
I.E.:
Merope
Maia
Asterope
Atlas
Celaeno
Pleione

Yes those are 6 of the 9 stars that make up the Pleiades :D in fact you can see the other 3 in the other cluster. One of the thing about the Seven Sisters is that they and their parents are all B type stars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleiades

Is it confirmed that the first UA's came from california yet pointed to Merope?

No it isn't because they didn't. A trailer showed a pilot carrying a UA in California Nebula but we have never found any there nor does the trailer categorically state he found it there.

Please go read the first page of this thread and maybe watch the Cannon episode of Educating Ed which you will find on YouTube and the home page of our site. The basics of how the UAs work, where we found them, etc have been stated there so that we don't have to answer these questions again and again.

Plus you get to see Ed looking very dashing indeed!

It seems very coincidental indeed that the morning of the server tick after a new barnacle has been discovered everything changes, but then it could be.

Two more data points that make me go "Whisky, Tango, Foxtrott":

1) At ~20:00 Game Time on Thursday, a human commander in Mobius shoots up half the spikes of the original Merope 5C to get meta-alloys. I have this on video, but since the name of the commander is visible, I do not dare post it. The change is persistent over several log-in/log-out attempt. However, every time I re-enter the game, the sentry skimmers are back.
On Friday morning, the destroyed spikes are back. Just went back into the game, and the site is still pristine. So are the skimmers, until I gun them down again.

2) When I first made the barnacle fly, the ground where it should be clearly had a different color. Merope 5C is light grey, the ground below was dark brown. This was the case before the change and immediately after the change. However, now the ground has the same colour everywhere.

I have left my favourite parking spot for now and will attempt to grab an UA from Aries Dark Region GW-W D1-52, get it to Merope, make the barnacle fly, drop the UA on the ground, and then drive backwards 60m. At that point, the barnacle will drop down again.

Let's see what happens.

great advice to watch ed ed - go to our homepage, it's embedded there.

Can you imagine ED throwing away their nicely tuned Bubble and BGS? Forcing everyone to lose or sell all their stored 'spare' ships? Can you *IMAGINE* the cries of 'foul play' from traders? I can't see that happening.
It's too game-changing for everyone - will alienate too many players and will wreck careful designed systems - there's no need for it to be that bad for it to provide plenty of entertainment
Not that I disagree, but I also think it's something they could do. It's been posted plenty of times here that Thargoids are in the files as a faction, and I've heard people say they will be a Powerplay faction that players can't join. So why not have them taking over systems in the bubble and making a sphere of influence like other powers? It would be well tracked what systems have been invaded and lost, and you could avoid them if you wanted to.

Was this on Reddit by any chance??
Possibly, I didn't post it there. I was surprised I didn't see it pop up on the forums here right away, so I've been mentioning it.

Is it confirmed that the first UA's came from california yet pointed to Merope?

No. The 'first US' wasn't an UA. It was just a story of a ship transporting an UA thru the California sector.

The first real UA, was found in Timocani. It fell of a Federal T9 and Redwizzard rescued it. It did not point anywhere particular. Over time, several UAs were 'rescued'. One of them made alive to the 1.4 release. Then it and all other UAs started pointing to Merope.

I find this interesting even though it doesn't make sense.

The UAs are being found free floating in space in a shell around Merope, 135 to 150 light years away.

Well 135 to 150 years ago would be 3167 to 3152. That's the time frame of the original game, with the second beginning in 3200 and the Thargoids mysteriously disappearing.

But as I said this doesn't really make sense. The UAs have shown no ability for propulsion or navigation, aside from being able to rotate towards Merope. If we were to accept that they were launched by something 135 to 150 years ago, they would have to be moving at the speed of light to be found where we are finding them today, assuming no loss of speed from passing near celestial bodies. I'm not sure this makes sense in terms of game mechanics. Spotting a signal coming from an object moving at the speed of light and then dropping out of supercruise on it would in theory match your ships velocity with the object. But I don't think the game works that way. It would be very interesting if you dropped out onto a free floating UA, stopped your ship, and then targeted a nearby celestial body and discovered both you and the UA are actually moving.

Anyway, I found the distance from Merope the UAs are being found interesting. Do we know anything of the history of Merope?

Have we ever mapped where the other end of the UA's points? Maybe it's a Hub/Spoke type setup? Merope being the hub and the UA's each forming a spoke to other specific systems?

Im about to go Probe hunting in my new conda. Any place I should look?

The latest barnacle was found in the California nebula. Im on my way there and as mentioned the probes form a shell around their target in Merope, perhaps they form around California in a similar matter.

135 to 150 light years away from their target. You are more likely to find them at that distance from Merope but I want to test out my theory near the california nebula that there are more than one shell of UAs.

That would only mean that they point away from the Merope star depending on their current location. Doesnt lead to anything.
EDIT: Oh wait you are talking about a pristine UA as if it was headed towards another location away from Merope. I got you.

It's an impossible task. I think Red calculated there to be about 50000-60000 systems in the shell (not sure about that number). Each of them will have a vector pointing away from Merope, that can intersect any number of systems. Even then you would have to put your fingner in the air and decide on a tolerance for your calculation. That cold be the difference betveen thousands of hits and zero.

Has anyone taken a UA to the black hole in Maia just out of curiosity? It's a stretch but would be interesting to see IF anything happens.

So can someone help me out here? Im not sure if its a coincidence or not... buuuut. No matter what I do. Merope in the gal map. Will lag the hell out for me. it goes to about 5 FPS. Everywhere else is fine. So there is SOMETHING going on at Merope...

Let's see what happens.

A big fat almost nothing. Finding the UA was easy, the third USS in the system had one. Dropping the barnacle back onto UA worked. To obey the law of "screenshots or it did not happen":

Targeting the UA and the Barnacle shows that their centres are just 1m apart. Close enough given how big a barnacle is, the        g UA was rolling after being dropped.

However, the space distortion effect of the UA now extends to the barnacle as well:

After save/exit and reload, the UA is gone, the barnacle is still there.

I will now limp back to Maia, repair my ship (Cobra Mk III has no place for shields, fuel scoop, cargo rack, vehicle hangar, ADS, DSS, and a AFM), fly back to the UA sector, find another one, and go listen to its music for a while. Just because I can. And try to set up a Youtube account for Cometborne with some video from the interesting part of the experiment in it. Quality could be better, but if wishes were horses...

And yes, I will also upload an instruction video how to make a barnacle fly.

Well im on the way to Merope right now to find a UA. Or look for UP. after getting enough money to insure the conda multiple times ( I dont trust thargoids ) not sure where I should start looking but the shell around Merope might be a good start.
