Ulon's list of cheers and grief

I am playing the game a lot recently and there's just too many little things I stumble upon all the time. Small things that cause me to stop what I am doing and think about them. They may be smart design choices or bad ones, missing bits of information or convenient placement of it, things that make gameplay loops great or things that break them, immersive environments or lore-breaking content. Whatever it is I have to think about, I'll simply put it on this list.

Some of these may be the reasons why I love this game. Others are sources of minor inconvenience, annoyance or sometimes even frustration. When listing the later, I do not intend to comment on or critique the overall state of the game (enough people are doing this with their own posts). I am also not here to spread negativity. I simply decided to finally list all the points I come across during my sessions starting today. It just happens that we memorize the negative things more than the good things. I will still try to reflect both impressions equally regardless.

The list itself will simply be a blank list without much comment on importance or significance of each and every point. I do not claim to be representative of any other players. I have my biases and I don't actively try to engage with all content in the game. I'll simply comment on the things I come across as who I am. I am not an explorer or xeno-hunter (usually) and I will not comment on somebody's behalf that I am not. For the most part I fly around the bubble doing missions or some combat. I am an Alliance player and care about the lore and background of the game and its factions. All of that will influence my list. I know I can be picky and petty about some things that truly don't matter in the bigger picture... With all of that out of the way, here I go:

Visiting an engineer
  • Spending a lot of time at ports and bases, I always notice atmospheric music I have not encountered yet. It always fits pretty well too. Concourses at engineer bases are my favorite rooms in Odyssey so far. I just sat there listening to the room a few times by now. Shame I can't sit down on an actual bench or chair... Maybe one day.
  • I don't know where to get the materials for the mod I want, thought I will probably find that info somewhere online. Never heard of these particular ones after many hours of playing. I seem to need a lot of them, so perhaps I won't bother after all.
  • Odyssey Blueprints can't be pinned... Luckily Inara can help me track things for me. Still, why not learn from Horizon design? It seems that a lot of the engineering problems that already were adjusted in Horizons are back for Odyssey. Is this really necessary?
Doing ground conflict zones for a BGS conflict
  • Witchspace never gets boring.
  • A lot of carriers in the system, but I can't check the names of the owners. I was able to do that in Horizons... Would help to figure out who might be mobilizing against me. I can tell that someone is fighting the BGS against me. No idea who it is though...
  • Conflict Zone AA turrets shoot ships of all sides (given that they start shooting or got engaged themselves) and there is no way to flip control over them (such as by taking a certain area of the map and holding it). Missed opportunity, but maybe this will be worked on in future? Allegiance of AA could be tied to who defends/attacks the settlement or who controls the command center right now...
  • Only way to take AAs out is with a Maverick. Walking around doing this loses me the CZ though as the NPCs continue capping, so I don't bother.
  • Ruined buildings in conflict zones are as immersive as it gets. Fires in many places, water dripping over my helmet from a broken pipe. I love it.
  • Conflict Zones can be won by taking the same cap zone over and over again... Hopefully some sort of cycling mechanic will be added.
  • No voice actors for different superpowers (eg. Federal Navy, ADF, Imperial Navy). Would be cool for the factions to reflect their feelings of each other, as in Feds hating Imps and vice versa.
  • All dropships are vultures (regardless of superpower of the faction). Federal dropship??? I am fighting Feds here, where are their ships?
  • Ship lands way to far away from conflict zones after it has finished. The zone is clear, so just use the landing pad! I don't want to walk a kilometer...
  • Relogging a conflict zone and doing it over and over again helps to actually win a war, who would ever use a frontline solutions dropship and waste time?
  • Alliance soldiers have (just like Imperials) very noticeable uniforms. They don't look quite as cool IMO, but still better what the Feds have. Some old style beige camo with no logos or uniform. White it looks believable, I pity them a bit. They don't look very unique or "Federal in your face" like their ships.
  • I like the Conflict zone reinsert scenes and UI. While re-inserting, I can see the dropship from outside and progress bars in the bottom right. The superpower logos are a bit too transparent for my taste, but still very cool. I think the team did a great job here. Makes me think of when I fought the Community Team in a CZ before. While Arthur was respawning there was an epic aerial view of my SRV and the battle. Most memorable Odyssey content so far.

Returning to port and checking out a nearby detention ship.
  • Frontline Solutions only available at large ports, nowhere else to get a dropship from.
  • Frontline allows you to sign up against the faction that controls the port that sends you out…. it might be possible to return to the port after becoming hostile with the port owners (who will then open fire on your ship, not sure about the dropship/taxi)
  • Omnipol is the police force across all factions/superpower ports? What happened to Allied Police Force, Federal Security and whatever the Imperials have?
  • Outpost types have nothing to do with their economy types…There is a couple of variations of outposts with different names such as "commercial", "civilian" etc. They do not correlate to the actual economy of the station or so it seems.
  • Speaking of economy, Odyssey settlement economies seem to be completely unrelated to System economy. If I am looking for Industrial settlements, going to Industrial systems doesn't seem to make it more probable to find them. They have been distributed entirely randomly. I can go to a refinery system and see tourist settlements everywhere. What a mussed opportunity... Unlike the other content I don't expect this to change any day.
  • The detention ships feels pretty cool. Billboards reminding you not to do crimes again. Some guards standing around. And there's a couple cells for me to check out too. I don't mind them being the same model as on some settlements. I could even get inside and look around. It's not perfect, but it's still pretty atmospheric. Hope improvements are still coming. I love immersive environments in Elite and I hope to see more of them.
That concludes the 30th! October started today. I am glad the forum saved my post for me.
