Uninstalling Odyssey

This is actually a question - can Odyssey be easily uninstalled from Horizons, returning Horizons to it's pre-Odyssey condition? In my case, I have just Horizons right now, and it runs fine and seems to be exempt from most of the patches and hotfixes needing to be downloaded for Odyssey. My thinking with Odyssey is that it's better to wait for a month or two until the majority of patches (some of which will be fixes to previous patches) are finished and part of the core download. But what if I were to download Odyssey today, just to try it, and then uninstall it until it's fixed? In theory this means l could resume playing Horizons like I can now, without constant hotfixes and patches being forced on me, and if my experience with other games applies to Odyssey, downloading it fresh with all the fixes "built in" would result in a more stable build than a dozen patches done "on the fly" on my system.

Has anyone taken this approach? I know plenty people have said, "I'm going back to Horizons until Odyssey is fixed," but does Odyssey continue to live on your computer, or did you remove it in order to avoid endless patch downloads and other side-effects?

A related question is, how separate is Odyssey from Horizons? For example, does it have its own keybind and graphics config file that needs to be backed up before uninstalling, or are these shared with Horizons, and if the latter, how would uninstalling Odyssey affect Horizons?

Oh, and I assume if I were to download Odyssey today, it would come pre-patched up to this point, correct?
Having bumped into you frequently on the forum: Be aware that Odyssey is still very buggy. The first couple of days I was fuming angry, but then I started accepting the whole mess (pragmatism rulez), and since then I have really enjoyed the game. I'm not into all the half glass crap. In this case the glass is more than half full, but it does have a sour taste once in a while. Go ahead and try it. If you get too annoyed, go back to Horizons, and wait for the promises to be fulfilled, in typical Fdev fashion. I'm in Odyssey now, and I don't see any reason to ever start Horizons again, but I don't run around shooting people. I just gaze at the new planets 👀 (in VR ofcurz)

I believe you are wrong. You don't need to patch each update / hotfix individually. Steam / launcher simply checks which files are outdated and installs the newest version AFAIK.
So in theory, I can save bandwidth by waiting a month or two to apply all the patches rather than download each one on release day, since there will probably be some overlap in files patched from one hotfix to the next.

Now whether I take this approach or not will depend on just how playable ED is on my own computer. If I'm getting 20 fps everywhere, it's either going on the back-burner or getting uninstalled. However, I tempted to roll the dice to see if I might be one of the lucky ones who can at least get 30 fps as worst-case scenario.

If it were MY money I was spending, I'd just wait, but some kind folk are offering to gift me this update, so now I'm wrestling with temptation!

One advantage is that I would be going into this with eyes wide open, knowing exactly what I'm getting myself into. That would curb most of my anger and frustration (which I've already experienced vicariously watching other people play). I would treat Odyssey as a paid beta, doing so in hopes that David Braben is sincere in his apologies that Frontier will make things right eventually.

I believe some of the planet textures will worry you more than the FPS, it's definitely worse than EBL. But I believe you've already seen it on screenshots.

They must really hate you. :D

Not sure what your build is, but when not on foot in stations or settlements, it's a solid 60 FPS for me with a 3700x and a RTX 2070 Super.
In the station on foot, it drops to some 50-55 FPS. Settlements drop to some 30-40, though sometimes it is higher, depends on if all the lights are on and NPC count.

One of the biggest reasons I want to experience Odyssey is that I've seen so many extremes - some screenshots look like 1990s 3Dfx games, others look like photographs taken from a Mars Rover. Same goes with framerate and gameplay. The only way I'll get to the truth of the matter is to see it for myself.

I can't say I agree. Try and find a repeating pattern in this:

(As you can see I tried until the "Sun" went down, and I didn't find any) :alien:
I also love the other stuff you post on the screenshots thread. (y)

Most Odyssey planets look awesome, some of the airless bodies have that Leopard / camouflage pattern though and I don't like it at all. I hope that one day all planets are improved.

OD, i was the same. I were also following the planet tech thread religiously, and thinking "oooof, this aint looking good" :( Steam reviews, videos bashing on it etc etc

But then i tried it out myself. And gotta say, I've already had my moneys worth. And i have barely started.

I have had one disconnect in 20 (ish) hours of play.
As for graphics, i haven't seen anything remotely close to what i have seen on videos and screenshots. Only graphical issue i have seen was entering the elevator in a star port.
I'm on full ultra settings, 2560x1440p.

I'm not trying to twist your arm. But as you said, Better experienced by yourself!

This is basically the real situation. It's a bit all over the place at the moment, but I'm guessing some of the bigger improvements will come sooner rather than later.

I've found that with frame rates I'm usually getting 60fps+ everywhere but every now I'll briefly get 12-20fps randomly in certain situations. So although I think there are maybe graphics optimisations still to be had I think there's something else going on that's causing the main problem. Possibly the flapping of butterflies on distant islands.

Another question to add to this - if i install Odyssey, but want to occasionally play in VR, can I still choose to play only Horizons, and play it without actually accessing Oddysey, so that I still get better performance while playing in VR?

Thanks

You can always choose "horizon" in the launcher. But be aware your keybind will probably get messed up.

And people will still tell you that the game actually runs fine and your hardware is just ancient and it's your own fault for not appreciating what you're given.

As long as the Odyssey's tech is not injected into Horizon, yes.
