Ok - more thinkings....

I suspect Kerrash is saying "you need a Babel fish".

This would mean that the transmissions of the UA, taken as a whole, are understandable, with the right decoder. What about video decoders?

I know we've been sown this path before - but shouldn't we have another look at this, in case we missed something?

We certainly should NOT be selling/losing/destroying the UA for the time being.

In Timocani tonight, I've seen Britain, nilreb, and Arle in Mobius.
I've had the "right" convoy 5 times out of about 30 SSS this evening. It was Ha178 in each case.
If my numbers scale up to the number of Cmdrs we have out there, we should get another hit soon.

As for prepared, I'm in a 30ly DBX, with Kill, Cargo and Wake scanners, hatchbreaker and collector controllers with 4 limpets.
My fire groups are set for Kill/Cargo/full weapons (general combat), single laser/hatchbreaker (surgical target cargo hatch), full weapons/collector (to snatch dropped cargo), full weapons/wake (to chase the T9 if it jumps).

Yup, I'm heading back over to Timocani now.
My Courier has Cargo and Wake scanners and I've 4 hatchbreakers.
Just done a trial run on a Hafnium convoy and successfully followed it till it lost the escorts and then stole the Hafnium, so hopefully I should be set for when (if?) I come across a UA convoy.

What Kerrash said was "you are one Babel fish short of an aquarium"

This is an odd sort of thing to say...unless it is a cryptic hint.
Babel Fish was the universal translator, aquarium is where you keep sea creatures, including whales.

A fantastic example of one of the best aquaria in the world with a perfect soundtrack...

The UA is the babel fish. We need to put it in the aqurium.

Hope you brought an AMFU in case you find one :^)

You won't need an AFMU that fast. Short transits (~30-60Ly) are unlikely to need (critical) repairs. Time spent in Witchspace/offline/on pad in station does not accrue damage, so you just need to limit your SC/normal space time upon finding one.

He may have simply been making a silly/HGtTG reference, based on how whale-sound/translation heavy the discussion had turned.

Similar but in a heavily shielded Courier (it's better shielded than a Python with a maxxed out 6A generator =p ). Was in an Anaconda but found the Courier makes getting access to the cargo hatch so much easier..

If I get hold of a UA, the plan is scoot quicktime to the nearest station then chill, have a cup of tea and think about what to do from there, refits etc...

A Babel fish is a universal translator

so

either the UA is a translator (of what?)

Or we need a translating device to understand it (what is it)

had that idea too (100 pages back or so) since the UA sends a human morse code.
Since it tells us names that were designated by humans, i thought that it basically communicates with our ships computer, accesses the database (maybe thats why it damages us, we are too squishy compared to them) and translates the data into chittery-morse.

the question is...why should it do that?
tell us that they are there and that they received and understood our message from the past?
but then what? it doesnt tell us where they are (atleast we havnt found a sign so far).
all the decoding methods failed, some of us here thought that there might be a "picture" in it, that shows their solar system (i think our golden disk had that too)

based on the lore, the thargoids had send us communication and translation devices during the war, but the government kept them a secret, since the war meant more military power for them. so this could be another attempt...

I'm there too. I've seen you and switched to solo, to not steal your SSS. ;)
But I can switch if you need me!

I think this is quite possible.

you say it damages us - we don't know that - we know it damages our equipment. Thats why I suggested putting it with a container of slaves as a test.

I feel that the current favored theory of taking it places and listening to it, has run its course. There are just toooooo many places. We need a NEW set of experiments. (apart from selling/destroying it).

AFAIK the ONLY thing we have done that got a response was putting 8 Sap8s with it. Maybe we should be spending more thought time on this track? Maybe with rare goods? IDK - just throwing ideas around.

Don't be silly. Hop back to Mobius and I'll jump back in for a short time.
"Stealing" in this case is arbitrary. If I found a T9 convoy with a UA, I'd be straight onto Comms yelling for people to wing up with me and jump into my instance.
I wouldn't necessarily begrudge anyone getting the UA. Just getting more for research would be good.

I've stopped with the theorising and trying to find ways to prove theories for now, I am now just on the UA hunting team. Unfortunately I can't do both it's just one or the other for me. =(

I totally get that - me - I'm way too clumsy with a cargo scoop to even slightly consider hunting them...but I do like a good puzzle. Especially cryptic crosswords - which is what the Babel fish comment reminds me of.

Just in case anyone reads this - Have we tried Soontill relics with the UA? Edit - just checked - yes its been tried.

As I noted earlier in this thread, the problem is that what one person finds logical, another finds to be illogical and what the second finds logical, the first thinks is illogical.
Let each Commander do to their own UA as they see fit, and may there be UAs for all.

I quite agee. Ilogical was poor wordining from me.
Incoherent is the word.
Some seem to think that the UA myster is poorly constucted and that the bits don't match.
It's not ilogical in an out of game sence to think that way.
I just don't do it. I persume that the bits fit.

I just thought that some of the contributors to this forum are not native English speakers and may not, therefore, have come across comments like the Babel fish one before.

For clarification - its quite common for someone to say about someone else:

He's a yard short of a cricket pitch
They're five cents short of a dollar
She's one meal short of a good feed
etc etc etc

They all mean that the person or group just doesn't really understand whats going on.

In these examples, cricket pitch/dollar/good feed mean proper understanding.

In the phrase From Kerrash "you guys are a babel fish short of an aquarium"

A babel fish is a translator

The word "Aquarium" means "proper understanding"

So I've translated the phrase as

"if you had a translator you would have proper understanding"

Its got to be worth considering.....
