Unofficial Launch Party

Sorry to hear that Alien, I hope none of my comments added to your decision.

Because apart from wishing it near me (but thought cambridge the best location being near Frontier Dev), I think my comments were more aimed at others, like those who thought manchester was in the middle of the UK.

Don't suppose anyone else wants to take up the mantle (I'd say someone near cambridge) Force the location and you'll get less arguments.

This is depressingly sad

This is really sad news. I was looking forward very much to that party AND meeting the Alien (and other kind people) in persona. :(

I won't speculate about your reasons to do this, Alien, but I do want you to know that I really appreciate what you did (and do) for the community and what you were about to do here.

This town or that town. And how far it is to drive. There are a lot of other Elitefans around Europe ;-) So it dosent matter if its Cambridge or Glasgow :p

What ever, perhaps, what i dont hope, the gamedelivery is late and we can all met at the SF-Wolrd-Con 2014 which is in London 2014!

But 4 Month to late, in August. See http://www.londonin2014.org/

But, perhaps, it is a good date to get a lot more Elite to one place? And perhaps the Officials can also come down to that place. Perhaps they can work together with the Worldcon self, with a panel or stuff like that.

There are a lot of people with SF backround, they surely just wait to join the Eliteuniverse!

Well, I have a few friends in Cambridge and live about at hour away from it. I also have a little laser light show I can bring to any party.

I might be able to source a fairly large venue too. Provided people didn't mind the party being in a church...;)

This is pretty awful. :(

Thanks for trying to set this up Alien, it would have been a lot of fun & great to meet everyone (wherever it ended up being).

Your efforts are appreciated!

A church would be fine in my opinion, it would add a lot of character to the meet. Are we talking about a church that is still in use for religious purposes or one that has been re-purposed for another use?

A church that is under the control of the Churches Conservation Trust and so hireable for private events. There's a big one in the centre of Cambridge and my partner is in charge of bookings for it. It is still consecrated, but a good location for a large number of people.

Sounds like a fantastic venue in my opinion then. Could you use it as an open space rather than a space set up for seated events?

I have a sudden mental image of David at the pulpit and us all kneeling before him ;)

ROFL

Oh David you are so big, so absolutely huge. Gosh we're all really impressed down here. Forgive us, O David, for this, our dreadful toadying, but you are so strong and well, just so super :D

.

If you mean can the pews be removed. Then no, they are fixed in place. However, it is pretty huge and there are some nice areas people can chat and stuff.

The only reason I suggest it, is because it's pretty easy for me to get hold of. Let's see what other ideas there are first.

Sounds nice.....whats the bar like????? :D

St Paul's church in Cambridge has a couple of reasonable sized halls - it really depends on the numbers. If it ends up being ~30 or ~150 that would be a big difference in the sort of venue that we'd need. At the other end of the scale, the Holiday Inn in Sandy (on the A1, 30 min from Cambridge) has a function room that takes 250.

I think it's good to have floated the idea, with an idea of location. I guess it will take a while to work out if there really is enough interest and fix the details...

As the general location seems to have been decided (Cambridge), perhaps this thread should be updated with a poll to get a rough feel for the numbers of people who will/want/cant make it?

Then the size of venue at least can be nailed down.

I'm from Australia, and plan to be in the UK for the official launch party.
Always thought the idea of an unofficial one was fantastic -- the alternative being so clearly prohibitive in cost -- so hope very much that it comes together in the end. There is, after all, plenty of time yet for it to be organised.
Not fussed where in the UK you might have the unofficial one (Isle of Man, anyone?) but travelling to the Core worlds from the Outer Rim as I will be, I would love to squeeze in this party also, and so all I ask is for it to be held on a date different to that of the official party...

Looking forward to seeing Alien (even if she is not organising it) and the rest of the #comments team there :)
