Update 13, Narrative and Access to 4.0

What I really want from updates right now:
  • fix the launch computers from missing the mailshot on the way out of stations. I have no idea how this got broken, it used to be fine.
  • serious improvements needed to planetary navigation. Even adding the ability to drop a waypoint that would show on your compass or radar so you could drive / walk back to it again would be a huge QOL improvement in that department. Bonus points for multiple waypoint functionality or setting them by longitude/latitude entry rather than solely placing them at current position.
(not an exhaustive list of things I want, of course, just the two things that have been driving me nuts over the last few weeks of Azimuth CGs.)

  1. Can we expect seeing on-foot community goals in the coming future?
  2. Will FPS be expanded on to be included in community goals?
  3. Will we see a more unified experience between Ho and Od players?
  4. Can both an Odyssey player and Horizons player be inside the same Scorpion SRV at the same time and if the Odyssey player is driver and exits the SRV is the Horizons player stuck as passenger or do they become the driver?
  5. Will Odyssey suit assets be available to Horizon players?
  6. If a Horizon player wings up with an Odyssey player, can the Odyssey player access their ship from a station lift?
Regardless if none of my questions are answered I just wanna say fantastic job to the devs for making this possible!
I think, from what I'm getting from the post anyway, is that the codebase for Horizons will be brought in line with Ody. You won't be getting the Ody features like on-foot, so I doubt that 1 & 2 will happen simply because Hor player won't be able to participate. 3. I think is more likely though. The rest, I guess we'll have to wait and see what they update us with.

Brain trees have them in Ody. I think it's in this location, Col 173 Sector GS-J b25-4 Edit: A Guardian site is right there too ;)

OK so in regard to questions mine is basically this, Will we still be able to choose to launch the game in 3.8 Horizons mode? This in my opinion is critical because there are a number of players for which the Odyssey launcher won't even run, this essentially excludes them from playing elite at all, which considering the console version is remaining in 3.8 Horizons there's surely no real reason to remove the PC version of that client.

Simply put despite efforts over the last year to improve Odyssey it still isn't quite there yet for many players in regard to performance so removing the version of the game that works well for many people is surely a severe own goal (again)

So please... if it's not already a thing can we have some assurance that this will be added functionality for people who want to run 4.0 but with the flexibility to run 3.8 for those who literally can't run it?

What kind of hardware are they using? I heard that Ody performs worse on better hardware (as weird as that sounds). For me, I play Ody without problems or performance issues (apart from the odd frame drop when arriving at a station). Granted, I only have a 1080p 60Hz monitor, but using High and Very High details, I still get anywhere between 50-60 FPS on my old AMD FX9590 and Vega56 GPU. From what I've read, high end Nvida and AMD GPUs seem to have performance issues with Ody, but lower end stuff doesn't. 🤷‍♂️

May be it's my impression, but even on high-end PCs EDO is not able to achieve the same game "fluidity" that Horizons has... it's not stricly related to FPS, as nominally they can run at same numbers, but more in the visual/rendering (including anti-alias) which is not providing the same [personal] feeling. Not considering the super-high contrast (affecting some weapon effects with burned-white/lights) and the awful blur rendering.

For space combat, hands down I do prefer EDH.

I run it at 60 fps 1920x1080. It does 'choke' occasionally but otherwise it runs fine. TBH tho, I miss playing it on console. Wish Ody did release on PS and XOne.

The balls (or audacity) of selling it as charity that they are “allow[ing]” you “to experience the new narrative and gameplay elements” “at no additional cost” when in reality it’s just one of the many, many release requirements that their “new era of Elite” DLC still doesn’t fulfil over a year later.

Well, they did announce, even before EDO released, that the clients would merge at some point in the future, it would seen that point rapidly approaches.

I found it much easier (and satisfying) to shoot the pylons with the Executioner - 2 shots and they are fully charged - easy enough to go around the whole site on-foot and fire them up, rather than using the SRV.
Me too, and in fact my G5 Executioner did it with one shot! An Artemis with inc sprint and jump was also fun to rock. It's easy to spot the triangular foundation from high above. What I don't get is why the Executioner seemed to mostly fire far to the side of where I pointed it. Made it hard to take out the sentinels.

IMO a pity that you can't get the relics, then roll them into the right place, and finally scan the terminal on foot. Would have been cool if you could do it all on foot instead of needing a srv too.

Hahaha, I have basically as good of a PC as you can have before the 4000 series come out. The problem ain't my computer, it's pretty decent. Saying "go play something else" is embarrassingly defensive. It's okay if I don't like Odyssey as much as you, I'm glad if you have fun with it.
Actually, you could be wrong there (maybe). From what I've read Ody runs worse on better hardware. Your top of the range PC could (not saying will or is) run Ody worse than my old FX9590 & Vega56. With this setup, I get stable 50-60 fps (I only have an old 1080p 60Hz monitor atm) at settings of High and Very High. The only problem I've ever had with Ody is an occasional frame drop when arriving at stations, other than that it's been perfectly fine.

Now, saying that, it could also be something along the lines of higher res and refresh rate that's causing problems for people. As a test, you could try dropping your res and/or refresh to see if it helps. Obviously, I can't up mine to test with, or I would have done already, but come the end of the year I intend to do a full upgrade of my system with all the new released hardware, so I'm hoping I won't get worse performance by doing so.

I get why it's being done, but I was really hoping we'd see some more UI/UX improvements before this was forced. Parts of the Odyssey interface are still beyond maddening - especially as someone using a controller, not kb+m. I'd originally hoped the console launch would fix some of that given you'd have to actually test it with controllers but then it got cancelled - so I guess we're going to be stuck with it.

- We’re happy to confirm Update 13 is coming on Tuesday 9 August and will see the highly anticipated conclusion of the Azimuth Saga.
My interpretation: Update 13 is coming next week. It will contain the conclusion of the Azimuth Saga.

-
we intend to give all PC players access to version 4.0, at no additional cost, while keeping the upgrade to Odyssey optional. This is expected to come in the weeks following Update 13
My interpretation: All PC players will be upgrade to v4.0 at some point after the release of Update 13.

-
With regards to how this affects the conclusion of the Azimuth Saga: delivering on our promise to offer the best possible narrative content requires taking full advantage of version 4.0.
My interpretation: v4.0 is required for Update 13 and the conclusion of the Azimuth Saga.

-
Therefore, Horizons players will be able to witness the final event in the Azimuth Saga and access related gameplay scenarios. Moving forwards, all PC players will have access to content in the next narrative phase given they are using version 4.0, except in cases where on-foot gameplay (and by extension, Odyssey) is required.
Interpretation 1: After all players have been upgraded to v4.0, all PC Horizons players will be able to experience the conclusion to the Azimuth Saga and related gameplay. Future updates will also require v4.0. However Horizons players will have to wait for the v4.0 upgrade to experience Update 13.

Interpretation 2: For Update 13, current Horizons players will be able to experience the conclusion of the Aziuth Saga and related gameplay. However, for
future updates, v4.0 will be required.

I'm going with Interpretation 1, but what does everyone else think?
