Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

I am really disappointed that Galnet and Community Goals are being shut down in 3.8. That's what basically keeps me playing. Frontier is going to have to change their marketing of Horizons on Steam and especially on console, because as of right now people are still buying Horizons 3.8 (based both on what they actually download from Steam and the advertised specs), and soon this version will no longer be the "living game" it's currently promoted as.

Gotcha. Workarounds that depend on jumping between versions won't be possible following U14. Although that's not the sort of gameplay we particularly want to encourage.
If you're stuck on foot you can still log in to Horizons version to get transported into the orbit in your ship - in Live mode, is my understanding. I think that was the person was asking about.

Not aware of any workarounds that would require relogging to 3.8 specifically.

I’m interested in why there will be a need to track commander progress separately between the two modes? This probably means that some really large change is happening with update 14.

It also means people likely will not be able to fix bugs by hopping in 3.8 the way they do now.

We don't expect every (or even most) players to choose maintaining and progressing profiles on both modes. But if you want to, the option is there!
So once the profile split happens, us FC owners will have to either maintain two versions of our FC or decomission the ones in the Legacy version?

Does this mean I would need to download it, even if I already have 3.8 installed now? Or will it just change name?

Does this mean newly bought cosmetics (after update 14) will be available for both saves (live and legacy), excluding those specifically marked? Or will I have to buy new cosmetics for Legacy and Live separately (if I so choose)?
I don't believe you'll need to re-download 3.8.

New cosmetics will be available on both profiles as long as those cosmetics exist on both versions. I.e. you won't need to buy anything twice. In cases where the cosmetic only exists on Live, you won't have it on Legacy.

Now i have a "fun" question... If PC is now getting different profiles for 3.8 and 4, a CMDR owning one FC now should end up having one FC in legacy mode, as well as one FC in live mode. Which one will console players instance with and what PC versions will instance with console FCs?

I think they are both independent of each other and are consistent with themselves only.

With regards to BGS..

So, you're going to be supporting two instances of the galaxy essentially.

Any work on BGS carried out on Legacy will only affect the Legacy Galaxy and any work on Live will only affect Live Galaxy?
That's right!

Third-party tool maintainers everywhere: "Aaaarghaaaaaaaaghghaaaaaghghghaaaaaa!"

More seriously: I understand why, but will there be some obvious indication in the Journal files as to whether the 3.8 or 4.0 galaxy is being reported on, and if so, is that documented already?

We are in touch with third party tool developers to help with this transition and answer those sorts of questions.

I can't spoil anything about the specifics of future updates. I can reiterate that any updates will only come to the Live version and unifying our development on one branch broadens the scope of possibilities within those updates.

For your second question, in short, yes. Consoles will retain access to 3.8. which is becoming Legacy Mode and has no impact on the Live game. Console will not gain access to 4.0 (becoming Live Mode) in future.
I'm sure what comes next will be very exciting, but the console news is very sad to hear.

We've got a great many console players who can't afford a PC for Elite, or simply don't want to switch - and are now locked out from affecting the same galaxy as the rest of us.
I know this has been a foregone conclusion for a while now, but at least being able to work on the same goals seemed like a decent compromise.

Wait a minute....
One question of importance.
If I have a few places 50k Lightyears from the Bubble I tend to visit whenever I go out into the dark and I value these in their Horizons state (Simply because the new planet generation made them look bad).... Does that mean I have to leave the bubble in Legacy mode (no Odyssey exploration).

In other words: I can't go exploring in Odyssey, visit my usual places and quickly swap to Horizons to see them in their original beauty?

I'd really like a clarification on this one.
Greetings
