Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

I didn't see this asked; will FD continue with bug fixes for 3.8?
Only critical fixes , so no FD won't touch legacy (3.8) unless they really really have to . So all the bugs we have had over the years which have been expired will be with Legacy til they may or may not switch off

So you don't own or have played 4.0?
I'm in all 3 NOW.
PS4 nice and (is I assume ED3.8) same as always, which kept me totally engrossed playing for 7000 hrs with maybe only about 3 or 4 CTD (think these were due to ED Servers) in that time.
I was just in EDH3.8 on GeforceNow, moving my FC on PC Cmdr - this looks EXACTLY same as PS4.
So, I just logged out and went to EDH4.0 - says ED4.0.0.1450 at bottom left screen - and OMG my T9 in hangar is actually moving (shimmering is the correct word).
Try to load Ext Nav Panel and it is poor (difficult to read). Try to Navigate FC to a new system, set destination and return to external view of FC and it is truly awful - blocky and no shade/shadowing whatsoever.
Quickly exit and return to EDH3.8 and view of FC is great as per usual (with a quick swap to PS4 and it is the same).

True, I have no idea what EDO FPS on planets, etc, is like but Buur's and Frameshiftlive gameplay videos do look great.
But EDH4.0.........eff it.
Not interested in any FPS anyways, I want a Space Sim.

Some games do let you manage their installs. Halo: The MCC for example. Lets you choose not to install each individual campaign or multiplayer component, so if you don't PVP you only need to install the campaigns, if you believe Halo 3's multiplayer is the one true way to experience pvp, you only need that installed, if you aren't fussed for the Master Chief, or prefer Firefight, you can only install Reach and ODST

One reason for some of the overly large installs is that PS5, unlike XBox, has a 64GB limit for DLC sizes. Any additional DLCs that go over that, the console cannot see. Dovetail Games have spent months working on a bespoke software workaround for this in Train Sim World as each route DLC for that game is around 5GB, so to install all of it on an XBox or PC takes around 200GB, meaning if they were to use the standard solution many devs do for this of bundling everything in a single install and having 10MB "unlocker" DLCs, players who only own 5GB worth of DLC would need to install an additional useless 195GB of content they cannot use
The closest I've seen to that on Playstation is the likes of Uncharted 4 asking you do you want to install the single player mode or the multi player mode first, however it doesn't ask you whether you want to install the multi player mode at all, only installing your second "choice" in the background when it lets you play the first one you picked, once it's ready to be played...

I'd have a lot more free space if they let us do custom installs!! 😯😂

I didn't see this asked; will FD continue with bug fixes for 3.8?
Hopefully, but it hasn't been confirmed...

If it's anything like the console versions since the "end of console development", we were promised only "critical updates", which sounds like only necessary or maybe only game breaking, bug fixes!! 😯😂🩲😀🤘

I apologize if my questions below have been addressed. I scanned the comments and couldn't find the answers.

Questions:
  1. Will my credit and fleet carrier maintenance fee be different in Live and Legacy modes?
  2. If I am very active in Live mode, but inactive in Legacy mode, but months later log into Legacy mode, what will my credit balance and carrier status look like in Legacy mode?
  3. Monthls from now, will I be broke in Legacy, with a decommissioned fleet carrier?

I like the general idea of a legacy mode for players who enjoy that old time flavor. However, I would prefer not having to worry about my Legacy account if I'm not going to use it.

Again, if this has been addressed, and I missed it, sorry.
AFAIK your FC will be decommissioned in Live or Legacy if you have no funds for upkeep.
I have enough and have put 5 years on each FC (PS4 and PC) so if I want to return I can - about 6.6Bil on each with 25M/week upkeep.
I have done this just in case U14/15/16/et al..... make EDH4.0 unplayable (it has happened before), or the Thargoid story line becomes uninteresting, as EDH3.8 is much more playable on (my) HD TV (no idea about 4k).

The issue with Steam reviews is people can:

1. bomb it with negative reviews
2. not update their reviews after patches have happened that fix a lot of the issues they likely initially had problems with

Bomb it...once per account.

Reviews are dated, and obviously most will be representative of the state of the title at the time they were reviewed. Steam also distinguishes between overall and recent reviews.

Anyway, due to a stubborn refusal to tolerate DRM in non-online titles, I haven't personally used Steam since 2004. The platform is still large and representative enough for the statistics to be of generally high quality and the reviews to be broadly reflective of actual consumer sentiment.

So it seems that we have to install Horizons 4.0 in order to keep playing 3.8...

Where are you inferring this?

Sally: "Yes, anyone who does not have the 4.0 game client currently installed will face a 50GB Dowload tomorrow."

Thanks for your reply.

I have stockpiled a decent credit reserve so I’m not worried about keeping it going in Live mode, where I am very active (usually several hours of gameplay per week).

I would prefer not having to deal with Legacy mode at all with respect to carrier maintenance.

If you do it now (FC Budget), your Millions upkeep will be on both Live and Legacy, you lose nothing as the split (duplication) is tomorrow.

I think this probably applies to 3rd party clients. The Frontier Launcher still has them listed separately, and I cannot imagine a scenario where they could even merge the products without causing problems (and more importantly, more work for themselves).

Sally's statement also contradicts the information in her opening post of that thread, which lists a Horizons-only (3.8) update.

I guess we'll see tomorrow, but I suspect Sally is incorrect or misinterpreting your question. I do not believe those who only want 3.8 will be required to download any 4.0 client, unless some third party launcher forces them to.

That's my thinking though, that Steam will switch from 3.8 to 4.0 being the "default" install. In which case it'll be what this guy is dealing with but in reverse. In this brave new world, Horizons 3.8 becomes a separate download like the "Single Player Combat Trainer" is now.

Why else would Sally be pushing us 3.8 players to download Horizons 4 today?

Makes perfect sense to me. Currently the 4.0 client is optional for people who don't own Odyssey, but when it becomes the "Live" client it would be very silly for a default install not to include it (especially if progress will not carry over when people switch to it in the future).

Yes, yes, that too! I mentioned that earlier - if 3.8 remains the default, someone buying Horizons next week (installing 3.8) and then upgrades to Odyssey six months from now will be in for a rude awakening in their starter Sidewinder.

It does make sense for Frontier to switch to 4.0 as the new default. It just sucks if we current 3.8 players have to install another 50 GB of unused data to keep playing the game we already own.

This sounds like a settings issue to me.

I don't think you'll have to download 4.0. Sally's referring to a situation where you do want to download 4.0. If you don't, it'll just be a small 3.8 download.

WDYM “continue”⁈ 3.8 hasn’t been supported for years outside of fixes for game breaking bugs.
While Frontier were heavily focused on Odyssey for the last 18 months, "3.8" and the console versions were fully supported until the "Proteus Wave" update about three months ago, when all we got was a video!

Indeed since then we were left in limbo, with little in actual support, but the executioner's axe really comes in the form of "legacy" mode knocking us into the ether tomorrow!! 😯😂🩲😀🤘

There is no default install though. If you install Frontier's launcher, you then have to install each product individually.

What about all the bugs which were introduced by "Odyssey compatibility updates" in preparation for merging 3.8 and 4.0?
I know a bunch of XBox cmdrs who would really like to be able to buy the cool clothing for use in Holo-me that was removed from sale in anticipation of 3.8 moving to the odyssey version of the store, but is still equippable if you owned it previously.
