Update 14 is now available for Elite Dangerous Live (4.0) | Important release information

First impression of Update 14 are AMAZING for me. So many boxes ticked for the points I was critical of since forever! <3

- Proper war with Thargoids - check!
- Actual consequences for not defending human space - check!
- Exciting battles in varied environments (ground burning stations, orbital installations, megaships, EVERYWHERE!) - check!
- Using the existing mechanics and assest in a new context to give more depth to the gameplay loops - check!
- Improving the existing features instead of adding a new, basic/placeholder ones - check!

Despite lack of new gameplay elements I find this update really great. Honestly, I have been criticising all of the above points since the Thargoids were inserted into the game and the "war" we've had before was one of (if not THE) biggest disappointments in ED development.

Thank you Frontier for listening to the community and finally making the Thargoid war what it should have been from the start! Obviously these are just first impressions, so we'll see as the time progresses, but for now - I am absolutely hyped for this! Also considering that now that 3.8 is dead and full dev effort can go into developing/fixing/improving the game further.

Odyssey has surely been through a bumpy year, but I think there are good times ahead :) Looking forward to Updates 15 and 16 and the "core feature" upgrade next year!
You do realise that a couple of forumites are likely to suggest you have been on the onionhead for being so positive and listing the additional content in U14?

I'm dipping my toes into the burning bubble in a short while - I was too busy chatting with one of the squadron last night to get on to play!

Great writeup.

The Legacy players have been eerily quiet, it has to be said.

So was there a patch or anything released since the original download that I missed? It seems to be working for the majority that I see posting here but as of about 20:30 or so UTC last night I could log in, watch a super lo-res video and when I open the galmap the game would freeze on the Thargoid war report screen.
At first I thought my bindings got wiped but that wasn't it. The game just hangs up on that screen and I have to kill the game to get out. I tried verifying the local files through Steam but that wasn't it either.
I'll try again when I get home today but that was my status as of last night.

I'm soaking up that sweet, sweet exobiology payout while I can before heading back. I figure the bubble will continue to burn without me and I'm not much of a fighter.

I just got back from a little jolly out in the Norma Expanse, I should have saved the exo scans until today, rather than selling them on my FC, never mind, I'll get back out there again next week.

For now, time to see how many rebuys I can get being nosey :ROFLMAO:

Please tell me how to fix this? What am I doing wrong?

Having great fun blasting Thargoid scouts in Open at the settlement combat sites but... there are a few issues still.

The first one is gamebreaking. I haven't seen any combat instances that properly end yet. The Thargoid interceptor that spawns at the end is always invisible, and invincible. Might have a screenshot later. This happened twice at Godel Escape.

Secondly these Thargoid scouts behave a bit odd. They just hover above the settlement turrets until you attack them. They don't even dodge the turrets or anything, just sit there statically.

Also to add to that the AX Pilots send too many messages, making it difficult to read anything in local chat. In addition the high volume of messages appears to break the chat, where I can't switch back to system chat anymore.

Aside from that still having fun. Maybe while you all work on the combat instance bugs I'll try delivering some emergency relief wine before those injured people start dying sober in here!

Same with me. Unable to book a apex shuttle to other systems.
I had this from the Apex desk. But luckily my ship was parked in the same station, so I went and sat in my ship and opened the galaxy map - and it gave me an introduction to some of the new symbols. I then exited the ship and went back to the Apex desk and it worked fine. So the problem is that the galaxy map at the Apex desk can't show you the new icons. I don't know what you would do if you don't have a ship or you can't get one to your current system.

For people having problems with the PC launcher upgrading the game...I have no idea whether the following actually helped me and/or whether I lost any settings in the process, but I'll mention it in case its useful to anyone. For some hours yesterday I had zero progress on the upgrade. So I unchecked "enable virtual cache" in the launcher options menu. And (following a restart) I immediately got a progress bar - it still took hours to complete, but at least I could see what it was doing. I've since reenabled the virtual cache.

@sallymorganmoore understand Powerplay is schedule for a rework in the future vs U14, but pesky Thargoid attacks against systems have the potential to impact economies/populations ergo powerplay control systems. Would FDev be able to confirm no changes to Powerplay mechanics/game play as a direct or indirect result of U14? Eitherway, both my PC Cmdrs have transitioned to EDO successfully, with minimal difficulty, thanks to this thread; mostly because of your posts and those of the most excellent members sharing their experience here o7 (y) see you in the black - be fast and be dangerous.
