Update 15, the Upcoming Feature Rework and More

They initially announced the overhaul in May of last year. They said they would tell us what it was towards the end of the year, they didn't. Now they are investigating the feature to see if it can be overhauled, but they're not going to tell us the results until the end of this year, maybe. We still don't know remotely what it is.

There's not wanting to spoil things, and then there's plans have obviously changed.
And there's 'Frankly we're not honestly sure that we're going to bother with it at all now but we don't want to say that because all hell will break loose, so we're kicking the can down the road for another nine months.' I mean this has got to be a record even by E D standards - it will be over 18 months between saying there's going to be an update to something and even telling us what the something is :ROFLMAO:

This. Oh dear jebus on a bike, this.

Just the constant "We know you wanted us to be more communicative, so now we like to communicate to you regularly that we may or may not have things to communicate, but we're not going to communicate them to you now, but we will communicate to you in the future as to when we will communicate to you the communications we plan on communicating."

Update 15, the Upcoming Feature Rework and More
Greetings Commanders,

We trust that you have been enjoying Update 14 and all the action the Thargoid War is bringing to the bubble. Amidst everything going on, we are taking a moment to update you on our upcoming plans.

Update 15
Update 15 is set to build upon the narrative and unlock the next major stage of the Thargoid War. This will be among the biggest moments in the game to date and we’re excited to see how you react. To allow the necessary time for development and ensure the update meets expectations, Update 15 will release in May. An exact date will be confirmed closer to the time.

Major Feature Rework
Last year we announced a major update that would rework a long standing feature. This is still being investigated, however a number of changes (not least the Thargoid War itself) have required our attention as a priority. We will share details of this investigation and our plans towards the end of this year.

Player Made Factions: Applications Closing
Player Made Factions have played a key role in expressing your will over the shape of the bubble. This goal is at the heart of our plans for Elite and reflected in the Thargoid War. Our focus is now turning to investigate how upcoming systems will allow every player and player group to have a meaningful impact on the galaxy’s landscape. This means we will be closing applications for PMFs, however we will process any remaining applications.

Console Profile Transfer Portal: Returning Next Month
The introduction of Live and Legacy modes required us to pause the Console Profile Transfer Portal in November last year. However, we’re now ready to begin processing further requests and will re-open the portal in April. We are pleased to announce that this is a far more complete process than we anticipated. We look forward to more console Commanders joining us on PC, especially to enjoy the features offered by Odyssey. To see which elements of your console profile will be transferred, see our forum post.

Live Mode as the Default Download
In addition to the above, we will be making the Live version of Elite the default download. This will encourage new players to try the main version of Elite with access to future updates while keeping Legacy as an optional alternative. Implementing this change will cause an update to appear for all Steam users, and Legacy players will need to re-download that version to continue playing, existing Live players will not require an update. This will have no effect on your save files, so if Legacy is your preferred mode, you can continue playing normally once it is re-downloaded.

While the above announcements outline several major plans for the upcoming year, further announcements will be made in the upcoming weeks and months. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please leave them below!

Something is afoot. I like it!

:D S

The PMF application has been broken since about November though, despite attempts to submit an application. Is there any course for people to actually get a submission in now before the closure or is our new squadron just out of luck for a PMF?
This is what I would like to know as well. From the post it seems there is still a way to do it, my question is the same, how? What route do we take?

C'mon man, can't even admit that it was just poor planning or timing? Have to blame it on the "Thargoid war". If this is the case, then kudos to your programmers in their fight against the now self-aware thargoids and subsequent AI uprising! That said, I don't really care about the major feature rework considering no one has ever mentioned what it is, so there's that. Just...enough with the excuses. Rework is late, sorry.

This is the feature update we were promised.

This is the feature update we received.

I'd laugh if the delay was FD making everything Open only. I mean 'The Thread of Many Names' where all paths lead is essentially the beating heart of this forum- maybe Brabus has decreed so shall the game be as this.

no Robert not the bat agggghhhhhhhhhhhhh it was a joke don't hit the face man

Something eerily similar has happened before, although back then, we at least knew three words: squadron fleet carriers. Originally announced at the Frontier expo in October 2017, and also called squadron carriers, with precious little information, but soon slated for the upcoming Beyond Chapter Four release in Q4 2018. Then delayed without a release estimate. July 2019 had a teaser, some tiny hints at what the carriers might be about, with a December 2019 release date. Then that got delayed to the next year as well, still no details. In April 2020, we finally got the information on what the fleet carriers are actually going to be about, followed by the public beta a week later.

So yeah, now instead of "squadron fleet carriers", we have three other words: "major feature rework". On one hand, that lasted well over two years; on the other hand, this time we don't even know what it's going to be about.
Of course, the last time they reworked a major feature we got the FSS and DSS grindy minigames, so I'd caution people that a rework doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to be better than what it was before.

Like I keep saying: play the game (or don't) for what it is now, not for what you think it might become later.

Actually Powerplay was prior to this and IMO its history repeating.
