Update 18.01

Maybe have a look to see if windows defender is very busy. I've never had the problem that it took huge amounts of time, but on my system I added an exclusion to defender for the directory containing the game files, that sped things up quite a lot. It seems like Elite is scanning every game file which causes defender to scan it again and slows everything down.

its been 10 minutes...Ive stopped the loader task & will try unchecking the options!

edit-thanks Varonica! unchecked all but the top one & finally it has started the download, 30m to complete!
I think FD really ought to fix the launcher problems-just been googling and problems have been reported for years!
The thing is it is probably tricky to fix as the problems aren’t universal, I don’t believe I have had a launcher problem in years if ever while others seem to get them every update.

Yeah same here, that's why things like this are worth trying, I mean why not, it can't make it any worse right? In this case it fixed it, so all's good!

It probably is something like that. I'm not using Windows Defender, got BitDefender.

Do as @Darkfyre99 said in the post before yours, create an issue on the issue tracker then post a link here so people can find the right issue easily, they can then confirm and later vote on the issue all of which should bring it to the attention of the right bit of FDev.
I described the problem of the bug, the red square around the cargo hatch, here is the link, go vote https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/63607

OK, so it's been a few days, plenty of time for all of the hamsters to spin up but my game still sits at a black screen for exactly three minutes before showing the title screen. During those three minutes, I can see the executable sitting at about 10-13% CPU while everything else is essentially idle. Then, at the three minute mark, the executable jumps briefly to around 35% and the title screen shows after which the executable's usage drops to sub 10% and all is well with the world. Anyone else running into this?

I don't know which launcher you're using but have you tried logging out of it and back again?
Yes, indeed. I even logged out of steam and back in and the ED launcher asks me to log in with steam each time it is launched. I've verified the files on steam bu I think I'm going to uninstall/re-install.

Not me
  • Click on pinned launcher link on task bar
  • after 3 seconds launcher appears
  • after a further 10-12 seconds the buttons appear in the launcher, click play
  • black screen appears ~10 seconds
  • Odyssey graphics appear ~ 7 seconds (17 seconds)
  • graphics countdowns appear ~ 24 seconds (41 seconds)
  • main menu appears ~9 seconds (50 seconds).
I have seen someone in another thread with this problem still even after changing graphics drivers.

I’ve just tried a few light paint jobs and I can see the red square - I wonder if it’s from the red light inside the vehicle hangar causing the hull material to reflect it? (there is a simplified model of it as a ship internal that looks to be illuminated with red light while in flight - there’s a very fine gap at the outside edge of the doors that you can peek through). I’ve got as close to the hangar in the camera suite and VR as I can, and it looks like red light is being reflected on a few other surfaces on the bay doors as well as the square area.

I’ll add my confirmations to your report 👍

That's precisely what it is. The reason? All lights on ship seem to pass through game geometry, not only cargo/SRV bay lights, but also engine lights, proximity warning lights in cockpit (very noticeable in Kraits) and headlights. You can test the headlights easily--land next to an Ody settlement at night facing the building and turn on the ship lights--the building will be lit brightly inside through solid windowless walls. And not only ship lights do this, fires in burning settlements also ignore geometry.

Why do these lights do this? Who knows? Probably performance optimization (shadows are expensive), ship headlights also would otherwise be blocked by ship kits on some ships (again, Kraits are the prime example of some kit pieces going straight on the headlights).

Anyways, it's only noticeable in certain situations when you go looking for it. IMO, fires in burning settlement buildings lighting up the outside is the most blatant example of this behaviour; the ship lights are pretty benign in comparison (I only now noticed after being pointed out about that glitch in this thread here).

I can confirm: The flickering shadows are highly annoying. Should be top priority to fix them, given that they worked just fine before U18.
I concur. And not only that, it seems to depend on the light angle and/or the angle you look at the scene, too. I had intense flickering in one settlement one day, no flickering in the same location the next day when the local sun was higher up in the sky. Changing shadow quality under graphics settings does not seem to help.

It's really annoying. Here's the relevant issue on tracker; please vote, everyone! https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/63484

I've had no problems for ages with graphics and shadows silky smooth on mega max settings :D... but since 18, the graphics/shadows flickering and ''back again by popular demand''...... rubber banding of all straight lines,😭 especially on ground missions and in Coriolis stations........ O7
